Vargas George Sr 911126 p12 George Vargas Sr., 76; Crows Landing native George Vargas Sr. died Sunday in Modesto at age 76. The dairyman was a lifetime resident of the Crows Landing-Newman area. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today, Tuesday, at Hillview Funeral Chapel in Newman. A rosary will follow at 7:30 p.m. at the same chapel. A Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joachim s Catholic Church in Newman. Burial in Hills Ferry Cemetery will follow. He was a member of St. Joachim's Church, the Westside Council of the Knights of Columbus, and the Newman Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Vargas of Newman; three sons, George Jr. and Gary Vargas, both of Newman, and Ron Vargas of San Luis Obispo; a daughter, Pauline Mattos of Newman; three brothers, Joe Vargas of Newman and Edward and Henry Vargas, both of Modesto; four sisters, Mary Bettencourt of Newman and Madaline Correia, Bernice Matteri and Evelyn Vargas, all of Patterson; and six grandchildren.
