Verdugo Ray 380916 p1 Youth Drowns in San Joaquin; Ray Verdugo, 20 year old youth employed in a contract labor crew engaged in topping beets on the Frank Cox place, was drowned Saturday afternoon in the San Joaquin River, when he was caught by a large whirlpool. The crew had just started work a couple of days previous and Cox had warned them against swimming at that point, due to the whirlpool. But a 40 foot hole provided an attractive place for diving and they went in anyway. Verdugo went down and never reappeared. A crew from the coroner s office was summoned and searched without result. The hunt was renewed Sunday and dragging operations finally found the body in late afternoon. The remains were shipped to Los Angles where his mother, four brothers and four sisters, survive him.
