Verhaegen Bill 000713 p5 Bill Verhaegen, 78; Bill Verhaegen, a well-known Crows Landing area farmer, died Tuesday at the Franciscan Convalescent Hospital in Merced following an extended illness. He was 78. He was a native of Orange County and farmed in that area before moving his family here in 1956. During World War II he served in the construction division of the Seabees, a U.S. Navy unit. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church. He and his late wife Valentine "Buttons" enjoyed traveling and took numerous trips abroad, often visiting relatives in Belgium. She preceded him in death in 1996. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel, followed by a vigil at 7 p.m. A Mass is scheduled for Saturday at 10 am, at Sacred Heart Church Burial in Patterson District Cemetery will follow. Survivors include two sons, Ken and Bill Verhaegen, both of Patterson; one daughter, Kathryn Hansen of Merced five grandchildren; and a brother, Rene Verhaegen of Palm Springs.
