The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a lineage society that is a non-profit, charitable,
service organization dedicated to patriotism, historic preservation, and education.
The DAR was founded in 1890 by four women whose common bond was the fact that
each had fathers or grandfathers who were patriots of the American Revolution.

The founders of the Daughters of the American Revolution sought to create an organization that would “perpetuate the memory
and spirit of the women and men who achieved American independence.”

A Wee Bit o’ Chapter History

The name “Betsy Ross” was first selected as the name for the Chapter but was later changed to “ Hollywood . ”  The Hollywood Chapter DAR was organized on March 18, 1910, by Mrs. Mary I. Barnes, Organizing Regent, and Honorary State Regent, 1910‑1911. Mrs. Barnes was a seven-time delegate to the National Suffrage convention in Washington, D.C., and accompanied Miss Susan B. Anthony and others to the Capital to ask Congress for some favorable action looking toward the enfranchisement of women. Other notable women who have belonged to the Chapter include (in part):  Frances Upson Young, mother of Hollywood screenwriter, Clarence Upson Young; Maude Gage Baum, daughter of Matilda Joslyn Gage, an active Suffragette of the times, and wife of L. Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz; and Virginia McMath, better known as “Ginger Rogers,” who joined Hollywood Chapter in 1945 and was a member until 1988.  An official DAR Insignia gravemarking and dedication were held in June 2006 to pay loving tribute to our beloved member, Ginger Rogers.
