KCGS The Kern County Genealogical Society provides volunteers to staff the Genealogy Room in the Beale Memorial Library, which is located at 701 Truxtun Avenue in downtown Bakersfield. It was organized in March 1964 for the purpose of helping people learn about Genealogy and to aid them in their genealogy research. The volunteers hours are from 1-4 PM Tuesday through Saturday. The library provides access to Ancestry Library Edition and other Internet based genealogy sites on two computers in the Genealogy Room; one is for use by the volunteers to answer patrons questions and the other is for use by patrons who are familiar with computer based research. The Society also regularly purchases genealogy books with money from dues, donations and fund raisers. These are then donated to the Beale Library for use in the genealogy room, and entered into the Library's electronic catalogue. Interested in being a volunteer in the Genealogy Room at Beale Library? The next Volunteer Orientation session will be held at 3:00 PM on 9 June 2012 in the Gates Computer Lab at the Beale Library. For more information call (661)-868-0745. ****************************************************** ****************************************************** The 1940 United States Federal Census was released for public viewing on Monday, April 2, 2012. At this time, the census is not indexed for easy searching, however many Genealogical Societies, other groups, and a multitude of individual volunteers have undertaken the task of indexing this census. KCGS members that wish to assist in the Indexing Project may contact Judy Knox, KCGS Indexing Coordinator at jlkgen@hotmail.com. While this task may take several months to complete, you can look at and search the 1940 Census by using Enumeration Districts. The census has been made available thru all of the major Genealogical sites, both free and pay. One site to consider is the Government Archive site, http://1940census.archives.gov. Click on this link to go to the site, or copy this site address into your browser. This site may be searched two ways, (1) by entering State, County, City and if known Street, or (2) by entering a State and an Enumeration District number. Then just browse thru the images looking for the names of the families. Also, if you have the 1930 Enumeration District number, there is a place to convert this to a 1940 Enumeration District number. ****************************************************** ****************************************************** The page was last updated on
