Meetings

The Society holds its monthly meeting on the third Tuesday of the month from 1-3 PM in the Tejon Founders Room of the Beale Memorial Library, 701 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield. Society business is discussed, followed by a program of general genealogical interest.  Outside speakers are invited as well as members who have special knowledge of a topic.  A few meetings may be held in other locations and one or two social events are held per year.  The meetings and social events provide opportunities for members to connect with other experienced researchers to discuss methods and techniques to over come obstacles so that you may  advance your research.

• 15 Jan 2013 -- "WRITING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY : Using E-Book" by Dr Dick Syder, PHD, University of Illinois -- Beale Memorial Library, Tejon Room, 2nd Floor, 1:00PM.  
• 19 Feb 2013 -- "500 Years: The African-American Experience: " Katy Germany assisted by Lynda Finch of the Kern County Genealogy Society will present the African American Experience from 500 years ago up to the present. She will cover major migrations, influences on the United States, and much more thru visuals and a slide show. -- 1:00PM on Tuesday in the Tejon Room, 2nd Floor, Beale Memorial Library, 
• 19 Mar 2013 -- "A SCOTTISH TALE" by Dr. Dale Stewart. Physician, Magician and Story Teller. Dr Stewart will be relating stories about his Scottish ancestors. Beale Memorial Library, Tejon Room, 2nd Floor, 1:00PM.
• 16 Apr 2013  -- "UNDERSTANDING YOUR DNA TESTING" presented by Lynda Finch. KCGS members who have done DNA Testing will discuss their points of view on what they found. Beale Memorial Library, Tejon Room, 2nd Floor, 1:00PM.
• 21 May 2013  --  "NAVIGATING THE NEW FAMILY SEARCH" presented by Abe Rodriquez. Learn tips, tricks and techniques to the revamped new FamilySearch.org. Beale Memorial Library, Tejon Room, 2nd Floor, 1:00PM.
• 18 Jun 2013  --  "SUMMER POT LUCK PICNIC"  --  6:30PM at Dahleen's house. KCGS members, families and friends join together for a good time and good food.  Watch for email reminder.
• 16 Jul 2013  --  "ICE CREAM SOCIAL" -- 1:00PM at Rosemary's Creamery located at 2733 "F" Street, Bakersfield. Watch for email announcement.
• 20 Aug 2013  -- "MY FAMILY STORY"  --  KCGS members will discuss their summer's research discoveries, whether from trips to other areas or local research in libraries or via computer internet sites. Beale Memorial Library, Tejon Room, 2nd Floor, 1:00PM.
• 17 Sep 2013  --  "CHURCH RECORDS, A LIFE REVEALED" presented by Kay Keith, KCGS member and DAR Chapter Registrar, will discuss how to research church records in pursuit of family ancestors. Beale Memorial Library, Tejon Room, 2nd Floor, 1:00PM.
• 12 Oct 2013  --  (*** NOTE *** This is a Saturday date in place of regular October meeting). "OPEN HOUSE IN THE GENEALOGY ROOM".  To be held on the final day of the FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY BOOK SALE at the Beale Library. The KCGS will have a large poster at the library's entrance announcing our open house from 10:00AM to 4:00PM in the Genealogy Room on the second floor of the library. KCGS members are asked to assist in this open house in 2-hour shifts. Please let Dee Dahleen know which 2-hour shift you are available for: 10-12, 12-2 or 2-4. Tours at 1:00PM and 3:00PM of the available resources including the Genealogy Room, Periodical Stacks, Local History Room and Microfilm Room. KCGS members will utilize the tables outside of the Genealogy Room to display genealogy books, KCGS membership flyers, pedigree charts, family group sheets and suggested Internet sites. KCGS members will also be available to answer basic questions about Genealogy, and if necessary direct people into the Genealogy Room for more assistance. • 19 Nov 2013  -- "NATIVE AMERICANS : 3000 Years of Migration"  Where did they come from. Where did they settle. presented by Lynda Finch and Delores Dahleen. Beale Memorial Library, Tejon Room, 2nd Floor, 1:00PM.
• 17 Dec 2013  -- "KCGS  CHRISTMAS POTLUCK"-- Beale Memorial Library Auditorium at 12:30PM. Setup room at 11:00AM and food setup at 12 Noon. Watch for an email to members.
