Madonna of the Trails A national project that is continuously supported by the chapter is the work to establish the Old Trails Road as a great National Memorial Highway. In 1911, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution established a national committee known as the National Old Trails Road Committee whose work was to erect monuments in each of the 12 states through which the National Old Trails Road passes. The Madonna of the Trail is a pioneer woman clasping her baby with her young son clinging to her skirts. This is typical of the work undertaken by the Society. The California Madonna of the Trails Marker is the western-most, dedicated on 1 February 1929.
DAR and Local Education The DAR sponsors good citizens awards for young people in our communities. Last year over 8,100 Good Citizens were sponsored across the country. Locally, the DAR Good Citizen Awards are given each year to a senior at both La Jolla and Madison High Schools by the La Jolla DAR Chapter. The DAR also sponsors American History Essay contests for children in grades five through eight. The La Jolla Chapter provides DAR American History Essay Awards to 5th and 8th grade students at La Jolla Elementary and All Hollows Academy.
DAR and National Activities The National Society supports two schools in the Appalachian region, Tamassee DAR School in South Carolina and Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in Alabama. Last year, the chapters raised nearly one million dollars to support these and other accredited schools, including Crossnore School in North Carolina, which offers a stable, healing environment in a residential group setting for children from families in crisis; Hillside School in Massachusetts, an independent boarding and day school for 80 boys from varied backgrounds who are underachievers or who have been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder; and Hindman Settlement School in Kentucky, which specializes in educating students with dyslexic characteristics.Similarly, the National Society assists in the education of Indian youth through scholarships and support of Bacone College, Alabama, and Chemawa Indian School in Oregon. DAR Conferences The DAR offers us a unique chance to hone our leadership skills, and each year our members are encouraged to attend the California State DAR Conference as well as the DAR's national gathering, Continental Congress, in Washington, D.C. We also discuss current events at our meetings, and decide, as a chapter, when and how to communicate our views to government representatives.
Junior Membership Activities Who are Pages? Pages play roles in helping to ensure the smooth running of Council Meetings, State Teas, State Conferences, and Continental Congress. Paging provides an opportunity for younger members to participate and meet other members while they learn about the work being done by the Society. Any member of the NSDAR who is not more than forty years of age is eligible to page. Junior members of our La Jolla chapter have served as both State and National Pages. Our chapter activities are many and varied throughout the year. The above activities are just a sample to let you know some of the things we do.
