Shirley Ann Larson
September 9, 1928 ~ April 28, 2006

Shirley Ann Jones Larson, daughter of William and Irene Jones, was born in Missouri Valley, Iowa and died peacefully April 28, 2006 in Merced, California. She graduated from Missouri Valley High and worked in the office of the City Clerk (her father) until she married a handsome young man, Walter Larson. In 1958, they left their hometown and moved to Merced, to be closer to the AF branch of the family. Shirley had a long career with the County of Merced Welfare Department. Shirley believed in supporting her community and was the best kind of volunteer--she "got the job done". In past years, she was busy at Weaver School, where her son and grandson were pupils. She loved her animals and was involved with the S.P.C.A. As a member of the Roaming Elks Club, she looked forward to the week-ends spent with good friends. Lately, she has been very active in the Merced County Genealogical Society, proudly serving as secretary and membership chairperson. She liked the challenge of researching her "roots', while the rest of the family kept hoping that she would "dig up" a "rich and famous" next of kin. She was also an avid 49'ers fan.

She was preceded in death by her husband Walt, her son, Randy and her parents. She is survived by her grandson Richard and his wife, Arcelia, her beloved great grandchildren, Brandon and Julie Ann; her granddaughter, Stephanie Kilby and her husband, Chris; her sister, Helen "Poo" Poole and her husband, George. "Petie" will be missed by her nieces and nephews and their families, Sherry and Jack Roberts, Phoenix, AZ, Bill and Nina Allen, Los Banos, Jack and Lora Allen, Madera, Marty and Rob Limbaugh, Stillwater, OK and Jim and Lee Ann Allen, Mariposa. She is also survived by cousins, Patricia Edwards and Mary Lou Turner, of Omaha, NE.

A very special kinship was formed with the Brewer family, Rick, Lee and Bobbi and their children, over 50 years ago. Friends like that are "family", too. She was a very special lady and will be missed by all of her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, she requested that memorial contributions be made to the Merced County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 3061, Merced, CA 95344.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at 10:00 A.M. at Merced Cemetery District Cemetery in Merced, California. The Reverend Harvey Mitchell, Sr. Pastor from the Merced First Assembly of God Church will officiate. Services are under the direction of Evergreen Funeral Home, Merced, California.
