John Policastro, 74

John F. Policastro, a resident of Merced for 40 years, died Tuesday in a Fresno hospital.

Mr. Policastro was born Sept. 20, 1925, in Greenburg, Pa. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946, and during the Korean War. During this time he served in the Occupation of Japan and Asiatic Pacific Campaign, where he received a Purple Heart with one star, the presidential unit citation with one star and a Korean service medal.

He was the owner and operator of John Optical in Merced for many years. In addition, he was past president of the Italian American Lodge, Elks Lodge No. 1240, North Merced Rotary, American Legion Post No. 83, Opticians Association of America, D.A.V., Merced County Genealogical Society, Dance Club of Merced and United Methodist Church of Merced.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda Policastro of Merced; his daughter, Nancy Spicknall of Merced; his sons, Randy Holden of Georgia and Mark Holden of Florida; his sister, Fran Giangarlo of Pennsylvania; his brothers, Vincent and Julio Giangarlo of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Ca.

Arrangements are under the direction of Whitton Family Funeral Service.
