Velma Watson, 71
Longtime Merced resident
Velma Bailey Watson, a retired postal clerk, died Monday at her home. She was
71.
Mrs. Watson was born in Deming, N.M., and lived in Merced 52 years. She was a
member and past president of American Legion Auxiliary Post 83, and a member of
the Eight and Forty, the honor society of the American Legion. Mrs. Watson also
was a member and past president of both the Friends of the Library and the
National association of Retired Federal Employees.
Mrs. Watson was a member of Merced Garden Club, Regional Arts Council,
Genealogical Society, Antique Study Group, save Our Heritage and Goldman
Committee. She also was the first PTA president of Margaret Sheehy School.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Atkins of Merced; two sons, Kenneth L.
Watson of Merced and Richard Watson of Wyoming; two sisters, Verda Mae Winkle of
Brookings, Ore., and Geneva Batemon of Las Vegas; five grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Stratford Evans Merced
Funeral Chapel.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel with Chaplain Steve
Gossett presiding. A reception at 2 p.m. Friday at the Pine Cone Restaurant in
Merced, will follow the services. Burial in Evergreen Memorial Park will be
private.
