The ship "Alpha" from Liverpool, arrived in Esquimalt Harbour on June 14, 1870 with 21 female immigrants: Eliza Scott (matron), Ellen Vondy, Mary A. Brown, Elizabeth Farrell, Mary Ann McMeiken, Jane Smith, Margret Royal, Jane A. Cormick, Elizabeth Summerland, Ann Jeffs, Salina Heyes, Agnes Kankin, Kate Heys, Janett Ballantyne, Louisa Schant, Margret McCarney, and Elizabeth Sinclair. (Spellings are as was in newspaper of the Victoria Daily Standard of June 20, 1870).

Marriage: In Victoria on June 19, 1870 by Rev. Russ, Jeremiah Madden to Sierra Nevada Zigler, both of Victoria.

Death: At Esquimalt on June 24, 1870, Barbara Ann, aged 34 years, wife of George Scarfe of Esquimalt. She was a native of Norfolk, England.

Death: At Victoria on June 27, 1870, William Rippan of Yorkshire, England.

Birth: At Victoria on June 25, 1870, a son to the wife of Peter Walsh.

Death: At Esquimalt on July 1, 1870, Sargeant Quick of the Royal Marines, of the ship "Endymion".

Birth: At Victoria on June 30, 1870, a daughter to the wife of C.S. Wylde, Revenue Officer.

Marriage: At Woodside Farm in Sooke on July 6, 1870 by Rev. Dean Cridge, James Welsh to Mary Elizabeth Flinn.

Death: At Victoria on July 7, 1870, William Wright, aged 53 years, a native of County Down, Ireland.

Birth: At Victoria on July 9, 1870, a daughter to the wife of George R. Lawrence.

Death: Mr. E.R. Thomas, former Proprietor of the Bee Hive Hotel in Victoria, died in London, England about June 10, 1870.

Birth: At Victoria on July 15, 1870, a daughter to the wife of John Murray.

Birth: At Victoria on July 16, 1870, a son to the wife of Henry Rudolph.

Death: At Victoria on July 27, 1870, Amelia Bowden, aged 40 years, wife of W. Bowden, Inspector of Police. She was a native of Kingston, Devonshire, England.

Marriage: At Victoria on August 3, 1870 by Rev. Dean Cridge, Thomas Nicholson to Sarah Eleanor Jenkinson, both of Victoria.

Death: Near Cadboro Bay on July 20, 1870, Henry Toothill, aged 52 years, a native of Yorkshire, England.

Birth: At Victoria on Aug 17, 1870, a daughter to the wife of J.F. Becker.

Death: At Victoria on Aug 17, 1870, beloved wife of W.P. Sayward, aged 46 years.

Death: At Victoria on Aug 22, 1870, Pablo Peralto de Garcia, aged 80 years, a native of Rio Zauaripsa, Sonora, Mexico.

Birth: At Beacon Hill Cottage in James Bay on Aug 27, 1870, a daughter to the wife of Staff Commandor Daniel Pender, R.N.

Death: At the John Bull Inn in Cowichan on Aug 30, 1870, William H. Ashe, aged 37 years, a native of Marcroom, Cork, Ireland.

Death: At Victoria on Sept 7, 1870, William Western Dunsford, aged about 47 years, late of Penryn, Cornwall, England.

Death: "A man named Dunstan died yesterday (Sept 8, 1870) at the Dominion Hotel on Government Street. The deceased was formerly in the employ of Mr. N.C. Bailey."

Marriage: At Victoria on Oct 12, 1870 by Rev. Percival Jenns, Charles Soptimus Jones, son of the late Rev. Robert Jones, Vicar of Branaton, Northumberland to Cecilia Josephine Work, daughter of the late John Work of Hillside, Chief Factor in the Hudson Bay Company.

Marriage: At Victoria on Oct 12, 1870 by Rev. Dean Cridge, William Lawson, Bank of B.N.A., Victoria, to Louisa MacDonald, 2nd surviving daughter of the late Alexander MacDonald of Handsworth, England.

Death: At Victoria on Oct 17, 1870, Jacob J. Junes, aged 22 years, a native of Madeira.

Death: At Victoria on Oct 17, 1870, Thomas James Smith, a native of London, England.

Death: At Victoria on Oct 19, 1870, John Huffer.

Birth: At Victoria on Oct 21, 1870, twins, a son and a daughter, to the wife of H.M. Cohen.

Death: At Victoria on Oct 31, 1870, Nathaniel Milby Hicks, aged 52 years, a native of St. John, N.B. He came to BC in 1858 and was elected a member of Victoria's 1st City Council in 1862.

Marriage: At Victoria on Nov 6, 1870 by Rev. Brabant at St. Andrew's Cathedral, Andrew Astrico to Penelope Anne Swyney, both of Victoria.

Marriage: At Portland, Oregon on Nov 13, 1870, Capt. John Hayes, late of the Steamer California, to Miss Elizabeth Mountain.

Birth: At Portland, Oregon on Nov 16, 1870, a son to the wife of Dr. James Dickson.

Death: At Victoria on Nov 28, 1870, Thomas Gould, Johnson Street baker. He was a native of England.

Marriage: At Victoria on Dec 6, 1870 by Rev. Mr. Russ, Louis Richards to Mary Frances, eldest daughter of George Elmes Nias of the Hall of Commerce and niece of the late Admiral Sir Joseph Nias.

Marriage: At Esquimalt on Dec 8, 1870 at St. Paul's Church, Charles Bonwick, R.N., 2nd son of the late Charles Bonwick of Carishalton, Surrey, England, to Isabella Monro, youngest daughter of the late James Austin of London, England.

Birth: At Lytton, B.C. on Dec 10, 1870, a daughter to the wife of Mr. R. Buie, Esq.

Death: At Victoria on Dec 20, 1870, Alfred Thomas, aged 15 months, 3rd son of Samuel Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Styles.
