William Massey, a Canadian in the Civil War
1820 Wicklow Ireland ~ November 13, 1865 St. Marys Ontario
From The St. Marys Journal-Argus, Thurs. July 7, 1927:
"Old Boys Recall Incidents of Bygone Days" features an interview with Marion Gibbs (Massey) Birtch about her husband William A. Birtch. Her father, William Massey is mentioned:
"Mrs. Birtch, despite her 73 years, is yet very active and possessed of a very good memory. She was the daughter of the late William Massey and was born in Dereham, Quebec [Brian's Note: For Dereham read Durham] some distance East of the city of Quebec. When Mrs. Birtch was just a child of 3 or 4, her parents came to St. Marys and bought the property on Waterloo St. mentioned previously [referred to as the old Massey homestead on Waterloo Street North]. At that time all the land about was standing timber and Mrs. Birtch retains in her memory a picture of her cradle standing on the newly laid flooring of the dwelling erected by her father...... Her father later built the dwelling at the Junction that was afterwards known as the Burley House.......When the Civil War broke out in the States Mrs. Birtch's father went to Tennessee and joined Grant's Army and after the war he was so broken in health that after spending six months in a Federal Hospital he was discharged and came home to St. Marys where he died. "
William's gravestone in St. Mary's cemetery reads:
WM. MASSEY
died
Nov 13, 1865
Aged
45 years
Also his wife
Ellen
died
Apr. 3, 1876
aged
53 years
I have not yet found William's Civil War Service Records in Tennessee. It is possible his daughter's memory was flawed, or that he enlisted under another name.
