Fishing Rooms - 1805

Within the history of Newfoundland and Labrador, there were very few census taken. And of the ones which were taken, some portions have been lost, destroyed, or simply never submitted to the government. Because of this lack of census data for the 18th and 19th centuries, this document becomes all that much more important. Transcribing this Register into a more easily readable document is an undertaking which I undertook in 1990. After careful scrutiny of a microfilm copy of the original Register at the Provincial Reference & Resource Library, I eventually settled on the version which is printed below. I have attempted to reproduce the original Register as closely as possible. I have not changed any spelling, nor have I corrected what may have been errors in the original. This was not my intent. I did however ignore pencilled - in comments which were near some entries, and deciphered the writing as I felt it was meant to be. One example of this is entry No. 50. Adjacent to this entry in the original is the note "Kate's = Keats, N. C. C.". This note was added by the late Nimshi Crewe, and was obviously meant to clarify the actual name. I feel however that the actual name is "Slate", as I have shown in the transcript. This decision was made after carefully comparing the writing with other entries. Within this census there are several notes of interest which you must be aware of. The first of these is what at first glance appears to be a typing error; the use of fs in such words as 'compafs' and 'pofsefs'. This is not an error. It is simply the Old English method of spelling words which contained a double 's'. This is very common in many older documents, such as court records and wills. There are also many instances of several Newfoundland words which may not be easily understood. Although these words are still in use in Newfoundland today, many of you may not be aware of their meaning. To make your reading a little easier, I have defined several of these words below. These definitions were taken from The Dictionary of Newfoundland English, G. M. Story & W. J. Kirwin, University of Toronto Press, 1982.

Flake:   A platform built on poles and spread with boughs for drying cod -fish on the foreshore.
Landwash:   The sea - shore between high and low tide marks, washed by the sea.
Room:   A tract or parcel of land on the waterfront of a cove or harbour from which a fishery is conducted; the stores, sheds, 'flakes', wharves and other facilities where the catch is landed and processed, and the crew housed.

Another point of interest are the dates which are given for rooms 49, 50, & 51. Again this is not a typing error. They are the actual dates which are given in the Register. I have strived to reproduce this census as accurately as possible. However, if you feel there are errors, omissions, or misinterpretations within this transcription, please advise me so I may correct them.
