Conception Bay North - Harbour Grace

Annual Examination of the Victoria Street School, 1880

The Harbor Grace Standard and Conception Bay Advertiser, December 25, 1880
The Annual Examination of this popular seminary took place on Wednesday last, in presence of the Directors and a large number of others of our townspeople. The pupils were examined in Reading, Spelling, Geography, etc., etc., and in every branch, were exhibited an aptitude and an acquaintanceship with the subject truly admirable. Perfect as the children were in recitation of lessons, they were, if I may be allowed the expression, more perfect still in behaviour. All through the trying and distracting scenes of the day their conduct was beyond all praise. Evidently such a deportment is not put on by the pupils as a holiday garb but is their every-day dress, and right royal raiment it is. Nor is their proficiency in their studies the result of "cramming," for the thoroughness in these evinced at the examination is only a reflection of every day preparedness. In fact, the pupils- those of them who are girls, which is the great majority - seem to have improved on the advice given by their poet-friend in the line: "Be good, sweet maid, and let who will be clever;" for they certainly seem to unite the two qualities of goodness and cleverness in a surprising degree.
