Will of Edward Brett


In the name of God Amen I Edward Britt native of the town of Wimbourne in the County of Dorset England being of sound mind and memory and in the 67th year of my age having lived in the Parish of Twillingate Newfoundland nearly 49 years but being mindful that I must shortly put of this my earthly tabernacle I do now make this my last will and testament in the following manner as my last wish and desire, First I committ my spirit unto God who gave it and my body to the dust from whence it came, and as for my earthly property which it hath pleased God to bless me with I do give and bequeath in the way and manner as follows,

First it is my wish and desire at and after my death that my schooner called the Mary Jane be made over to the firm of Messrs. Wm. Waterman & Co. to meet and pay the debt there transacted by Edward Britt and family and after that debt be paid the remainder of her value be paid to my executors hearafter named,

Secondly I give and bequeath to my wife Mary Britt one dwelling house with all my gardens and fields and cows to be to her for her support till her death that she be at liberty to rent sell or make use of for her living and after her death that the same shall be eaquel divided between her two sons John & Mark Britt should they outlive their mother

Thirdly I give to John & Mark Britt one dwelling house and fishing room and fishing articles as nets & seins boats and tools of whatsoever I may be possesed of at my death to be eaqueled devided between the said John Britt & Mark Britt Furthermore It is my desire and wish that to each of my five daughters as hereafter named shall be paid ten pounds each to be paid to them as soon after my death as can be made convenient by my executors nameing my daughters Ann Peyton £ Matidlda Roff £ Elizabeth Hodder £ Catherine Britt £ and Susan Manuel £ that it be paid to them share alike whith the exception of Matilda Roff her share £ to be paid to Asarellah Britt grandson of the deceased Edward Britt to be paid to him for the room now occupied by Andrew Roff belonging to the said Assarellah Britt and that this sum be paid to him as soon as he becomes of age or paid to some person to become security to him for that sum at that period and that the said Assarellah Britt shall have no other claim on the said Andrew Roff and I do authorise and appoint Mr. Abraham A. Pearce as my adminstrater and executor together with my wife Mary Britt my executrix to act together for the benefit of all parties with my best wishes and God*s blessing on their laboure I say adue

I Edward Britt have written this with my own hand on the ninth day of February one thousand eight hundred and seventy as my last will and testament
