Transcriber Notes: 1 This may be the same noted Newfoundland Mi'kmaw, and hereditary chief, Jean Michel Aga(the) variously mentioned in the Saint Pierre et Miquelon RC and Sandy Point RC parish registers. This may also be the same individual listed as John Michael in the Burin RC parish registers and John Mitchell in the Fortune RC records. The Newfoundland place names or toponyms Jo'mikelek "Miguels Brook" (Bonavista) & Jo'mikelji'jk (Exploits) (literally, at John Michael / or Jean Michel), designating a place used by this hunter as part of his hereditary hunting-trapping domain. 2 This is presumably the same noted Mi'kmaw hunter as Noel Paul as listed in the Burin and Fortune RC parish registers as well as other published historical sources. This may also be the same Newell Paul (also Noel Paul) variously listed in the Burin and Fortune RC parish registers, as well as other published historical sources. The Newfoundland place name Nuelpo'lek "Noel Paul's Brook" (Exploits). 3 This may be the same John Stevens (Abenaki) as mentioned in various historical documents as hired by the Beothuk Institute in search of survivors, who was accompanied by Peter John (Mountaineer Indian) [probably the son of James John, noted Mountaineer] and John Lewis (Abenaki). This may be the same John Stevens as noted or the son of him. The NL Mi'kmaw Stevens family, whether of Abenaki or Mi'kmaq decent may be related somehow to the Ettiene, or Ettienechuit familes listed in the Saint Pierre et Miquleon parish registers (1764-1848). Note that the Mi'kmaw pronunciation of Etienne is Ekkien, or Ekkian, |
