Born January 22, 1908, in Western Shore, Lunenburg Co., he was a son of the late Firman and Mary (Manuel) Swinimer. Jim was formerly employed with HMC Dockyard, Halifax, from 1942 until his retirement in 1968. He then moved from Dartmouth to Windsor Forks. He was a member of St. Mark's Lodge since 1946 and the John Albro Lodge, where he was a chartered member. Jim received his 50-year jewel in May 1996 from the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia. Jim was a member of Welsford Lodge 26, AF&AM and the Hiram Chapter 3, Windsor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grand-children. He loved his dog Pal#2. Jim was a loving family man, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, and will be sadly missed by his family and community. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. After the war, he joined National Sea Products, retiring in 1981 as manager of design and construction (ships). He was a life member of the Navy League of Canada and the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a past president of South Shore Naval Association; Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 23; Lunenburg Curling Club; Nova Scotia Legion Curling Association; Nova Scotia Fisheries Exhibition and Fishermen's Reunion. He was a past commodore of Lunenburg Yacht Club; founding director of Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic; trustee of Canada's Naval Memorial - HMCS Sackville, and former elder of Central United Church, Lunenburg. He was an avid curler, participating in numerous provincial, Canadian and international events over the years. He enjoyed being with his family at his cottage at Lake Mush-a-Mush. Born in Riverport, he was a son of the late Charles and Gertrude Oxner. He served with the Canadian military overseas during Second World War. He was a self-employed fisherman most of his working life. Surviving is brother, Terrance, Halifax. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Kathleen MacDonald. Ronald - 85, Maders Cove, died February 27, 1998, in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Maders Cove, he was the eldest son of the late Capt. John P.B. and Janet (Young) Strum. He had worked for 32 years with Maritime Manufacturers and Construction Ltd., Maders Cove; 10 years with Piercey Supplies Ltd., Halifax; and six years with Dumaresq & Bryne Architects on various South Shore and Valley jobs including, Parkview Education Centre and the Kentville courthouse. He was a member of the Home Builders Association and had also served for many years as secretary/treasurer of Maders Cove Fire Department. He had maintained a keen interest in genealogy and began wood carving in the folk art tradition. He has carvings in the Desbrisay Museum and the Nova Scotia Art Gallery collections. He is survived by daughter, Susan (Mrs. John W. Chandler, QC), Chester; sons, Sherman and wife Dolleen, Belleville, Ont.; Graham, Port Albernie, B.C.; Murray and wife Deborah, Burlington, Ont.; sister, Doris Millett, Dartmouth; grandchildren, K. Rebecca, Ian, Allison and David Chandler, Scott, Ryan and Carolyn Strum; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Meister); sister, Mona; brother, Frederick. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay, where funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Rev. George Allen of Clementsvale officiating.
