Obituaries - June 1999 Tuesday, June 1, 1999 The Halifax Herald Limited REEVES, Ray Otis REEVES, Ray Otis - New Ross, Lunenburg Co., passed away peacefully on May 29, 1999, at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. He spent his entire life in New Ross, in the house where he was born. During his 80 years, he made many friends in the close-knit community of New Ross. He was a self-employed woodsman and trucker until his late retirement. He was a member of Christ Anglican Church, New Ross, and was on the church vestry for many years. He was best known for his love of fishing, playing cards and peppermints. Known affectionately as "Boppy", he enjoyed his time with his 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. For 56 years, he had a loving marriage with his devoted wife, Audrey (Zinck). He was the son of the late James Edward and Ella Mae (Veinot) Reeves. He was predeceased by sisters, Daisy, Florence and Ethel; brothers, Harold, Ira, Austin, Roland, and John who died in infancy. He is survived by brothers, Charles, New Ross; and Robert, Tremont; children, Margaret Ann (Broome), Kentville; Shirley (Hiltz), Bridgewater; Arlene (Shiers), Bedford; Ronald and Miles, New Ross. Born in Martins Point, he was a son of the late Percy and Teressa (Hiltz) Shupe. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in England, North Africa, Italy and the Mediterranean. After returning from overseas, he worked as a federal public servant for 25 years as the supervisor of maintenance for the Department of National Defense. He was a long time member of the Freemasons. He was past master of Composite Lodge, 105 AF and AM, later transferring to a Charity Lodge, 69, Mahone Bay. He was also a past high priest of George S. Wright Chapter, 27, RAMRNS at Bedford and a member of Chebucto Council 3, in Halifax. Surviving are daughters, Alice MacLeod, Martins Point; Kathryn Craig, Dartmouth; sisters, Marjorie Carmichael, Martins Point; Viola Deshaies, Montreal; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Born in Crouses Settlement, Lunenburg Co., he was a son of the late John and Hilda (Conrad) Crouse. He started work at Lunenburg Foundry and Engineering Limited at age 17 and later became secretary-treasurer (accountant) until his retirement after 52 years of service and was in the Board of Directors of the foundry. Basil was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Lunenburg, the Zion Lutheran Male Choir, former church council member and past treasurer of the church. He was a former member of the Lunenburg Town Council and later a member for a number of years on the Town Planning Advisory Committee. Basil was a member of the Navy League of Canada; Commanding Officer of the Lunenburg Sea Cadets; a Cub leader; member of the Lunenburg Academy Foundation; Lunenburg Curling Club; Lunenburg Heritage Society; and one of the founding members of the Lunenburg Medical Clinic. He was a former chairman of the Queen of the Sea Committee, "Nova Scotia Fisheries Exhibition"; Lunenburg Jaycee's senator; past president of the Lunenburg Board of Trade; the Bluenose Golf Club; and the Lunenburg Home and School Association. Basil was a dedicated participant and leader throughout his life and was very respected by all those who had the privilege of associating with him. He joined Air Cadets in 1942 and then worked with the Cadets as a civilian instructor until 1987, teaching photography, rockhounding and gem stones, bush survival and orientation and ceramics. He was involved as a teacher, distributor and exhibitor of the Parrsboro Rockhound Roundup (Nova Scotia Gem and Mineral) for 25 years. Wednesday, June 23, 1999 The Halifax Herald Limited BOLAND, Grover K. BOLAND, Grover K. - 76, Milton, Queens Co., died June 21, 1999, at Queen General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Bangs Falls, Queens Co., he was a son of the late Roger K. and Hazel A. (Laybolt) Boland. He was educated in Bangs Falls County School and worked in the woods and sawmills. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in 1941 at the age of 18. He served overseas with the CFC and RCA for four years until he returned home in October 1945. He was honourably discharged with the rank of sergeant. From 1947 to 1951, he re-enlisted in the RCA and joining the Active North Nova Scotia Highlanders and then was transferred to the 79th Field Regiment RCA in 1951 and served in Germany. In 1952, he was posted to the 3RCHA. From 1955 to 1958, he was posted to the School of RCA in Shilo, Manitoba. He was discharged in 1960 and re-enlisted to the 14th Field Regiment and served until discharge in 1964. He received the Canadian Forces Decoration in 1955. Following his military career, he worked for various companies such as Irving Oil Limited and Atlantic Transport Limited. He was a service station manager and helped train reserves. He was a pulpwood contractor for Bowater Mersey Paper Company. He was a member of Mersey Branch 38, Royal Canadian Legion, Liverpool, and served as Sergeant at arms and 2nd Vice-president as well as chairman of many committees and received the Certificate of Merit as well as life membership. He was a director of the Queens County Fair and a director of the Maritime Ox Pulling Association, an avid ox yoke maker, he received many trophies and ribbons for his oxen from the South Shore Exhibition, the Shelburne County Exhibition, the Queens County Fair and the Summerside Cattle Show. He was a member of the Liverpool Co-op, the 14th Field Regiment; 84th FB Bty Association, Yarmouth and the North Nova Scotia Highlanders Memory Club. Surviving are daughters, Patricia McElmon, Dartmouth; Nora Wooden, Halifax; son, Nelson, Mersey Point; five grandchildren; sisters, Belva Brown, Mersey Point; Jean Uhlman, Chelsea; brothers, Linkard, Mersey Point; Harley, Bang's Falls. He spent 16 years as a real-estate consultant. He was an avid sports fan, playing softball for many years and a long time member of Chester Golf Club. Cheryl grew up in Chester and was employed for all her working years with South Shore Community Service Association, (Bonny Lea Farm). She was a well qualified, certified vocational evaluator and over the years held a total of seven different positions at Bonny Lea Farm, both at the union and management levels. Her most recent position was that of participant services coordinator. As of this year, Cheryl had been employed at Bonny Lea Farm for 25 years and was highly valued and respected as an employee, colleague, advocate and friend. Cheryl's passions were her family, friends, dog, gardening, boating, ATV riding, and working. Although a private person, to her family and friends Cheryl will be forever remembered for her loyalty, trustworthiness and devotion to those whom she greatly loved. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gary. She is survived and will be deeply missed by her son, Shawn, daughter-in-law, Sandra and their children, Amanda, Kyle and Scott; her sister, Diane Webber Shields and nephew, Sean; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Diana and Bill Hilchie, and niece and nephew, Erin and Adam; her parents-in-law, Nina and Cecil Meisner; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
