TEAL, CARL FREDERICK St. Mark's Anglican Church at Broad Cove was again the scene of a sad service on Sunday after- noon, May 16, when a memorial service was held for the late Carl Frederick Teal who was lost at sea on Friday, May 7th, 1943. As at the service on the previous Sunday, the altar of the church was adorned with vases and a cross decorated with daffodils. Friends and relatives of the de-ceased from Vogler's Cove, Cherry Hill, Crousetown, Petite Riviere, West Dublin and LaHave Islands, as well as Broad Cove, filled the church, coming to pay their last token of respect to the memory of one taken from their midst so suddenly and tragically. The service was conducted by the rector, Rev. W R. Harris, who took as his text Psalm 93:4, "The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters; yea, than the mighty waves of the sea", and spoke in a very appro-priate and consoling manner to the bereaved ones. Hymns sung at the church were "Commit Thou, All Thy Ways" and, "There Is No Night In Heaven". After the sermon, Mrs. Wilfred Crouse, of Crousetown, sang a solo, "Sometime We'll Understand". She was accompanied by the organist, Mrs. Ezra Smith. After the solo, a lovely marble tablet with bronze lettering, which was placed in the church in his memory by his mother, and brothers and sisters and had been draped by the flag, was unveiled by his brother, Russell, and dedicated by the rector. The tablet bore the following inscription: "In loving memory of Carl Frederick Teal" who was lost at sea, May 7, 1943, in his 36th year. "The one I love has gone to rest, His fond true heart is still. The hand that always helped me, Now lies in deaths cold chill." After leaving the church, the service was concluded at the Breakwater, where prayer was offered and the hymn "Jesus Saviour, Pilot Me" was sung. The flowers, which were beautiful, were car-ried from the church to the cars and from cars to Breakwater by Gordon Herman, George Conrad, Rex Herman and Allman Smith. Winters, Lunenburg native who rose in the political and industrial life of Canada to become nationally prominent, died in Monterey, Calif. Friday night of a sudden and massive coronary thrombosis. He was 59. The distinguished business leader and former Liberal cabinet minister is being buried in Lunenburg Thursday afternoon following a burial service at Central United Church. Only last year, the handsome Mr. Winters had fought to the final ballot before losing the Liberal leadership race to Pierre Trudeau. Mr. Winters was a former board chairman of British Newfoundland Corp. Ltd., the Newfoundland Crown Corporation which promoted and is constructing the $900,000 000 hydro development in western Labrador. At the time of his death he was chairman of Canada's huge Brascan Ltd., formerly Brazilian Light and Power Co. He had attended a board meeting Wednesday in California of the Caterpillar Tractor Co. Thurs- day, he and his wife Eleanor had begun a tour of the Carmel Valley with William Blackie, board chairman of Caterpillar. Mr. Winters died as he was being taken to hospital by ambulance. His wife was with him at the time. The death came as a surprise because Mr. Winters had no history of heart trouble and appeared in excellent health. He was an avid tennis player. Mr. Winters gave up a promising engineering career at 34 to win his first election to the House of Commons in Queens-Lunenburg riding in 1945. Five years later he entered the cabinet as minister of re- sources and development. He was given responsibility for such problems as housing and con- struction of a Trans-Canada highway. He also had jurisdiction over administration of the Northwest Territories and over the publicly owned National Film Board. In 1953, he was named Minister of public works and held that portfolio until he was defeated in 1957 when John Dief-enbaker's Conservative government took over. He then joined Rio Tinto Mining Co. of Canada as president and during an eight year span became an executive or director major companies. By 1965, Mr. Winters had an annual salary of $150,000 from his many involvements. But Prime Minister, Pearson talked him into returning to politics, with the hope that he might one day replace Mr. Pearson. Mr. Winters won the Toronto seat of York West in the 1965 general election and was named minister of trade and commerce in 1966. On Jan. 12 last year, he announced he would not be a candidate for the Liberal leadership and said he would hold his seat only until the next election. But on March 1, he changed his mind and decided to run. At the April convention in Ottawa, he lost to Mr. Trudeau on the final ballot by 249 votes and returned to private business once again as president of Brazilian Traction. He also moved back into many of his former directorships and became chairman of Brascan this year. " I accept the fact if I live I'll be working to at least 65," said Mr. Winters, who admitted he was a compulsive worker. " I have nothing more personally that I can gain. I'd like now to perhaps do a little more to help others. " Mr. Winters married the former Eleanor Dixon of Montreal in 1936. They have two children, son Henry and daughter Marny, both of Toronto.
