United Baptist Cemetery
Upper Blandford, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
This cemetery is located on Route 329. It is also known locally as the Young Cemetery
Upper Blandford, United Baptist Church, was built in 1895, so that by 1998, it
was 103 years old. The first Baptists in Blandford came from the islands of
Tancook, Little Tancook and East Ironbound. It was part of the Tancook
parish, and was the only mainland church. The mode of travel in those days was
by sail, and on calm days, using oars.
The property, was given by George Young, the building was raised in June
1895, and uses a full length ridge pole. The foundation of split granite, bearing
handdrill holes, it was based on the traditional meeting house style of the day. At
one time it had a steeple, which had to be removed, because of difficulties in
keeping it watertight. The appearance of the building today, is much as was the
original.
Some ministers were: Rev. Harry Hill, to 1933, Rev. George Sharpe and Rev. M.A. Gibson.
