Really Good News!
We now have an office of our own in the Stratford Branch
of the Stratford-Perth Archives.
Our office hours are the same as the Archives:
Our files and library holdings are kept at the
Stratford Perth Archives,24 St. Andrew St., Stratford.
Telephone: 519-271-0531 ext. 259.
Summer hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Mon.- Sat.
but closed for the noon hour on Sat.
Call for winter hours.
We will eventually have internet hook-up and of course we
already have our own microfilm reader. You will see many changes
at the Archives, including much new shelving which helps tremendously
in organizing the collections for much better accessability.
The indexing program for the Family Histories is nearing completion.
This project allows us to look-up the surname in which you are
interested. Rather than useing up valuable research time looking
through about 700 Histories, the index will direct you to the
Histories that contain the name of interest. Only a few of these
Histories lodged by their authors actually have an "all-name"
index, but all will soon have a surname index for quicker
identification.
New Provincial Archives for Ontario
Kathie Orr has been in the forefront of a small group of
genealogists that for some time have publicly deplored
the deterioration of existing facilities of the Ontario
Provincial Archives. They have promoted upgrading of the
existing facilities or a move to more suitable quarters
capable of enhanced environmental control. Environmental
controls would permit the Archives to store and preserve
valuable documents that were in danger of being lost because
of flooding and storage areas having no such control. It
would seem that the efforts of Kathy and her group have paid off.
On 18 December 2006 Ontario Minister of Government Services,
Gerry Phillips, announced that the Ontario government will
partner with York University to create a new home for the Archives
of Ontario. Over the next two years a new archival facility will
be built on the main York University campus, at 4700 Keele Street,
in Toronto.
The new facility, about 98,000 square feet will more than double
the size of the current public reference area, and will meet
international archive standards. The new facilities will make it
easier to showcase some of the Archives' most valuable collections.
The new facility will make it easier to serve a broader clientele,
including school groups and delegations.
The new archive will be the largest provincial archive in Canada,
with a collection valued at more than $400 million. It will be
responsible for preserving the documentary history of the province
and will be an important source of research for the police, courts,
historians and genealogists. The new Archives facility is expected
to open in 2009.

Here is a message from our Chair and Librarian:
We have purchased the marriage registration reels for Perth from 1869 -1922. May I stress that after 1910 I am certain that we do not as yet have all the reels. However, whatever ones I could identify I ordered so we have at least one reel for every year of registration. We will do lookups for people. The cost of a registration printout will be $3. (stamped envelopes would be appreciated if possible if you have the date and certificate number. If I have to look it up it will be $5.00 per certificate. If they email me first it would be best if they are unsure if the event was registered. In addition post 1910 has two pages because these needed affidavits to get a licence. I won't charge more but it's just for theirinformation purposes. When we get a good list of additional reels we will order them but at the cost of postage and handling we want at least fifteen or twenty more reels to order to make it worthwhile. You can leave the reel number with me or mail it to the branch. Please use the Archives of Ontario reel numbers because we have to use those to order from OGS. Hope this excites a few people. We will only have one set of registrations and they will stay in Stratford and there will be no loan-out of reels. It is just too expensive to put reels in all three Archives.

We have produced an alphabetical index of names of Applicants and Defendants from the Perth County Affidavits of Bastardy. The index is available for sale but the documents are only available from Perth County OGS at a cost of $3. per affidavit which includes postage.
We will not allow anyone to purchase a complete set of these affidavits so that the privacy of individuals named in these documents can be preserved. These copies are only available from the branch when the fee is paid. Please do not ask the Stratford Perth Archives to copy these documents as our branch retains the copyright in order to preserve privacy. No exceptions.
