AIREY - Charlotte Jane (nee Harrower) of Saskatoon, formerly of Watrous. It is with sadness that the family of Charlotte Airey announces her peaceful passing at her home in Stensrud Lodge in Saskatoon on Monday April 28, 2008. Charlotte was born on July 1, 1923 to Joseph and Marion (nee Lamont) Harrower in Watrous, SK where she spent the first 82 years of her life. Charlotte lost her mother when she was only four but she later had a nice step-mom, Edith (Airey). She was the oldest of four girls and two boys. As a Canada Day girl, Charlotte's birthday was always a holiday and often included a hometown parade and fireworks! Charlotte began school at Mimer School but spent most of her years at Freshwater and Watrous High Schools. Charlotte began nurse's training but later attended Normal School for a short time and taught at Thornfield and Kilmory schools before she had a family. Charlotte married John Airey on July 7, 1944 and they enjoyed 58 years together before John passed away in 2002. They farmed for many years. Charlotte also worked as the Secretary for the Watrous United Church for 17 years. They had three daughters and one son. After the births of five grandsons they were pleasantly surprised when a granddaughter arrived. Charlotte was very active in the community of Watrous and in the Watrous United Church. She served for many years on various Home Care and Health Care boards and on local and Presbyterial church committees. She was a member of the Floral Rebekah Lodge #34 and was also part of the team that compiled Prairie Reflections, the Watrous and district history book. She was politically active, an avid quilter and a great fan of watching figure skating. Her greatest passion was always music. She sang in several choirs, played the organ for funerals, accompanied sing-alongs, chorded for bands and danced away many evenings at Danceland. She always encouraged her children in their own musical pursuits. Her favorite place was her cottage at Manitou Beach. For the last several years, Charlotte endured the illness Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Despite its severely debilitating effects, Charlotte never lost her sharp mind or joy in living. Her family is grateful to the many caregivers who ensured that she enjoyed a high quality of life until the end. Farm life included milking cows, stacking loose hay, a huge garden and carrying water or melting snow for her gas washer. Electrification in 1969 eased these duties. Retiring to Watrous in 1976, Dave and Katie continued gardening to the delight of passers by. As health deteriorated, they moved to their children's acreage at Hague, and when Dave passed away in 1988, Katie rented a condo in West Portal Manor, and later a suite in Central Place. Her failing health necessitated Home Care, three months in Parkridge, and 33 months in Central Haven Special Care Home. We are grateful to all her care givers. Her personality and faith remained vibrant until her death. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday December 21, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. from Philadelphia Mennonite Brethren Church, Watrous, SK. with Pastor Darren Holland officiating. Interment will be held in the Philadelphia Mennonite Brethren Church Cemetery, Watrous.

EVENSON - John William. Our loving Heavenly Father called John to come "Home" in the early morning hours of November 18, 2006. John William Evenson was born May 27, 1921, to Robert and Louise Evenson, at Watrous, SK. He was the fourth child of a family of eight. When he was eight years old he moved with his parents and siblings to a farm at Fort-a-la-Corne, where he grew up. He attended Fort-a-la-Corne school and grew up helping on the farm and also working for various farmers, especially at threshing time. In 1942, at the age of 21, he was called into the army to serve in the Second World War. He served overseas in England from 1944 to 1946. When he returned home from his army service, he acquired three quarters of land on section 29 in the Brockington district. There, he and his brother Russel cleared the heavy bush, picked roots and broke the land for farming. In 1951, John married Irma Staff, of the North Star district, and they settled on the farm to make a living and raise a family. He taught his sons responsibility in helping with farm chores and the value of hard work. John always planned his work so that there would be time for taking his family on summer holidays, especially to go north to the lakes to fish. Through that, we all learned to love to fish and that has even resulted in his son, Dennis, making fishing-guiding his livelihood. There were also many times of going up to the "Pines" with the children and Grandpa and Grandma Evenson and other families for picnics in the summer. For a number of years, while Pine Bluff school was still open and his children attended there, he was a member of the school board. He also participated as a Beatty Wheat Pool committee member for several years. John and Irma retired off the farm, into Melfort, in 1975. Son Allan and his wife Frances returned from BC to take over the farm. In his retirement, he enjoyed curling with the senior men; also he and Irma enjoyed many winter evenings with friends over games of Kaiser or Whist. John, along with Irma, became quite active in the Covenant Church, where in 1994 he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord, and also became a member of the Melfort Evangelical Covenant Church. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and most recently, great-grandfather, also a friend of many. He wanted only the best for his family and he always wanted to see them try to do their best in whatever they were doing. John was predeceased by his parents Robert & Louisa Evenson, brothers Bert and George, and a number of his relatives. KANE - Lois Lavern (nee McKenzie) March 31, 1932 - November 22, 2008. Lois was the eldest daughter of Don and Doris McKenzie. She grew up in Watrous, Sk and met the love of her life, James E. Kane at Manitou Beach. They were very young; Dad always joked that he had to wipe her nose before he kissed her! They were married June 7, 1949 in the United Church and four years later they married again in the Catholic Church, which put Dad back in "good standing!" Mom made many lifelong friends working at Robert Simpsons, Sask. Power, Drope and Associates, and many more through Dad's career with the Regina City Police Service. Mom and Dad had only one daughter, me, but were blessed with the arrival of a grandson and two granddaughters and eventually 7 great grandsons and just recently a greatgranddaughter. Mom's health declined rapidly in the past year. Even through the rough days she always had a sense of humor and was always appreciative of everything anyone did to help her out! Mom's main interest was her family, but she enjoyed travel with Dad, family and friends from one coast of Canada to the other and to exotic locales as well. She was an extremely talented interior decorator, hip on fashion and electronics, got great pleasure from making a Grand Slam, and never objected to stopping at a gambling machine. Happy hour was a must while the Young and the Restless was on! She was a good cook, well read and proficient at grammar and punctuation having been a stenographic instructor with Sask Power. She was the life of the party, the bell of the ball, but most of all "Loey was a lady!" She was predeceased by her brother Bobbie; her parents Don and Doris McKenzie; her loving husband Jim; and brother-in-law Ralph Crawford. She is loved and remembered by her only daughter, Linda and son-in-law Peter Halbgewachs; grandson Jamie (Carrie); two granddaughters Jana (Dave) Bulmer and Jillian (Jason) Smith; seven great grandsons Brandon, Jayden and Taylor Halbgewachs, Riley, Brady and Conor Bulmer, Sawyer Smith; one great granddaughter Samantha Smith; two sisters, Donna Crawford, and Carol (Andy) Lawrence; one brother Don (Harma) McKenzie; as well as many nieces and nephews. Lifelong friends, Lorraine Butler, Ruby Krienke and Peggy Elliot always had a place in her heart, as well as many other friendships she treasured even tho' time and distance has come between them. There is an empty place in our hearts, but Dad has her in his loving arms again! A memorial service will be held at Regina Funeral Home, Regina, SK, on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.

LAKING - Mary Lila Muriel (nee Irvine). The death of Mary Lila Muriel Irvine occurred at the Long Lake Valley Integrated Facility Imperial, SK on Saturday, April 26th, 2003. She was the only daughter of Francis Joseph Irvine and Mary Lila Falls, from the Ottawa Valley. Lila was born 28 November, 1907 at Bruce Mines, ON. The family moved westward to Saskatchewan as the country opened up. At seventeen Lila became engaged to a friend of her brothers, Edward Stanley Laking, CNR agent/operator at Ardill, SK. They were married in Moose Jaw, October 1925. Their two boys, Francis Edward born 26 August, 1926, and Robert Therol, born 11 September 1927, were both born in the railway station at Ardill where the family lived. As Ed acquired seniority they moved on to progressively larger towns: Rhein, Birsay, Neidpath, Turtleford, Radville and Watrous where he retired in 1962. Lila was always a keen supporter of community activities and entertainment wherever they lived in, church, sports and school organizations, baked cookies for successive generations of neighborhood children, shared what she had to give unstintingly. Association with the social activism of the Railroad Unions during the hardest years of the 30's brought her into early contact with the founders and organizers of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation in Saskatchewan, the more so since they traveled by train and were sure of a warm welcome at the station. With the outbreak of World War II, two brothers on active service overseas and two boys training with the militia, she worked still harder in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion. With the move to Watrous, Ed became a Rotarian, Lila a Rotary Ann. They dedicated themselves to helping keep up Camp Easter Seal at Manitou Beach. She continued her active support of the NDP to the end. Lila outlived most of her immediate family, above - mentioned husband and parents, brothers Francis Hazelwood Irvine and his wife Katherine, Therol Dewitt Irvine and wife Muriel, Robert Cuyler Irvine and wife Jean; son Francis Edward Laking and wife Carol. She is survived by her younger son Robert Therol Laking and wife Shirley of Ottawa; granddaughter Roberta Laking of Toronto; nephews and nieces hither and thither. They were a rambling family. MCARTHUR - Marjorie (nee Snell) of Watrous passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon February 26, 2004, after 94 years. Marjorie's death follows that of her husband Neil, in August 2002, to whom she was married for over 60 years. Marjorie was born and grew up in Watrous, where her family farmed. She attended Saskatoon Normal School and taught for a number of years during the depression. Her teaching took her to small rural schools in the Melfort-Nipawin area. Marjorie still has copies of the IOU's she received in place of the $400 per year pay she was supposed to get for her teaching. Neil, who farmed at Watrous with his father and brother, proved his good intentions by traveling regularly in a Model A to see her, over depression era gravel and dirt roads even worse than the grain truck wrecked ones of today. Marjorie and Neil went out on a limb in 1939, when Neil left his farming partnership with his family. Together they bought the Kirton farm, with nothing but hope and a promise to pay over the coming years. The proof of Mrs. Kirton's confidence in their worth was the fact that they paid the whole thing off in a few short years. Marjorie had a quiet, deep pride in their farm, and confidence in her worth and contribution. Her influence and work was evident in their beautiful farmstead which was recognized with a Master Farm Family award in 1966. Like many women of her generation, life was not easy, and Marjorie worked incredibly hard. She raised four children, and at the same time raised large flocks of chickens and turkeys, separated cream and kept a large garden. Her candled free range eggs and her quality Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys were in great demand, and brought in much needed income as Neil invested in breeding stock for what was eventually to become a successful herd of purebred Herefords. Marjorie was a wonderful mother, wise and trusting with a great ability to see the humour in things. She understood the importance of developing independence in her children. When the end of high school approached and people asked if she was going to miss the departing child, she would laugh and say Heavens, no, I've done my part, it's time for them to get on their way and take care of themselves. But her love was never in doubt, and her support was never absent. Marjorie and Neil have four children, Donald (Susan) of Watrous, Jean Proto (Frank) of Regina, Doug of Vancouver, and Moira Whitehouse (Larry) of Fort Worth, Texas. Marjorie, true to her never seeking any form of recognition, directed that there is to be no funeral or service, and no flowers. A Tea in her memory will be held in the Legion Hall in Watrous on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. A scholarship fund for Watrous students who have made a contribution to the community through participation and leadership will be established in her and Neil's name. Memorial donations may be sent to the McArthur Scholarship Fund, 3234 Westminster Road, Regina S4V 0S2.

MCARTHUR - Neil 1900 - 2002. Neil McArthur, master farmer, purebred Hereford breeder, and long time Watrous area resident, passed away peacefully at Manitou Lodge, at the age of 102, on Thursday, August 29th, 2002. Neil was born in Campbelton, Scotland on February 10, 1900, where his family worked as crofters. His father came to Canada in search of farm work. Neil followed two years later, traveling by boat with a herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle belonging to the Goodales at Cheviot. Neil and the cattle traveled to the Cheviot Hills where Neil was employed as their herder. Neil's memories of Scotland were mainly of poverty and hard work. He visited Scotland only twice during his long life. While very much a Scot, he had no romantic attachment to his life there. He loved Saskatchewan and Canada and wanted to live nowhere else. The family eventually were all united in Canada, and took up farming in the Amazon district, where Neil farmed with his father and brother for a number of years. He married Marjorie Snell in 1939, and in 1942 they purchased the Kirton farm south of Watrous. They named it Treelane Farm after the rows of trees Neil planted on either side of the long lane, and which to this day remind us of the evident love Neil and Marjorie had for the farm and the prairies. One of Neil's accomplishments was to become a first-rate district grain farmer, and a breeder of registered Polled Herefords. This breeding stock was recognized around the world. Neil cared deeply about his community and served it long and well. He was an advocate for changes for the better, including school consolidation, larger municipalities, and medicare. He was a municipal councilor for Wood Creek municipality for twenty years, a member and Chairman of the Watrous Union Hospital Board for forty years, and a member of the Watrous Veterinary Board, the Manitou Senior Citizens' Service Board, and the Watrous Wheat Pool Committee. In 1964, he was a candidate in the provincial election for the Saskatchewan Liberal party, losing by a very small margin. A great passion of Neil's life was the 4-H movement. He worked hard to found the first beef club in the Watrous district in 1955, and was its leader for seven years. He continued on for many more years as an assistant leader. Neil greatly valued the young people from his 4-H days and has made a special request that they be pall bearers at his funeral. Neil's first love was farming, and he contributed in many ways to agriculture in Saskatchewan. He served on the board of the Saskatchewan Hereford Association, including a two-year term as President in 1969-1970. He was also a member of the Saskatchewan Livestock Association. A carefully kept farmstead and outstanding farm practices earned the Master Farm Family for southern Saskatchewan. In 1985, he was inducted into the Saskatchewan Agriculture Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to agriculture in Saskatchewan. Neil was predeceased by his parents, Archibald and Isabella McArthur, his brothers Duncan and Francis, and sisters Chrissie, Euphemia and Isa. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years. Marjorie, son Donald (Susan), Watrous, son Douglas, Vancouver, daughter Jean Proto (Frank), Regina and daughter Moira Whitehouse (Larry), Fort Worth, Texas, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Neil lived a long and healthy life, and other than blindness over the past few years, remained strong and healthy until his death. He was a resident of Manitou Lodge in Watrous for the last seven years of his life, where he received wonderful care that he spoke of often with great appreciation. Some of his greatest friends in his last years were the nurses and caregivers at the Lodge. Neils' funeral will take place at the Watrous United Church on Monday, September 2nd at 2 p.m.

He first became manager of Bloss Jewelers, then Prentice Jewelers. And, starting in 1967 he worked as manager of the Peoples Jewelers downtown store until his retirement at age 65 years ... Although, he continued to repair watches and clocks anytime he was needed so that many of Moose Jaw's timepieces continued to run, on time, as a result of his expertise and willingness to help! They celebrated their 62nd Wedding Anniversary on July 30th of this year, and, as Dad with his quick wit would say ... that's a pretty good run. He will be greatly missed, and cherished in the hearts of our family. He will live on in the sparkle in our eyes loving, quiet, gentle, and wise.

Helen's love of culture music, art, and drama were often reflected in the outstanding artistic work that Helen created for and with her students by producing exceptional set designs, paintings and backdrops for school productions, plays, and musical. Helen's dedication to providing her students with an enriched educational program, whether the student was gifted or challenged, was demonstrated by the long hours she spent tutoring students in her home helping these students to achieve their learning desires as well as her yearly entering her classes in the Saskatchewan Music Festivals.
