Finnish Club in Winnipeg

It's June Repo, vice-president of the Finnish Club in Winnipeg. Thought you might be interested to know that my grandparents were members of the Central Organization of Loyal Finns. Erik immigrated to Canada in 1923 and his wife Tyyne arrived in 1924 as a single woman. They met in Winnipeg and were married in the home on 68 Kate Street by a travelling Finnish minister named Pastor Heinonen. Many of the Finns who were members of the Central Organization of Loyal Finns later became founding members of the Finnish Club which originated in 1950. The Åström's had a boarding house and many Finns lived at their various homes in Winnipeg over the decades. As a matter of fact the first president of the Finnish Club lived at our home, Reima (Ray) Saarinen.

Finnish Club from the Norlen Scrapbook pages

If you look on the side bar of Finnish Club from the Norlen Scrapbook pages and scroll down to page 1 of the typed written minutes [ninth image down] you will see that the meeting was held at 68 Kate Street, the home of Erik Åström who is my grandfather. My mother was born on October 5,1927, in the same home. Also attached is the pin from the Central Organization of Loyal Finns and a photo of my grandparents, Tyyne and Erik Åström. I checked to see if the house on 68 Kate Street was still standing but it's a vacant lot.

I've attached a photo of my mother sitting on the picnic bench taken around 1933 or 34. She is the young girl sitting at the picnic table wearing a white sailor-type hat. When my mother was alive she told me that it was a Juhannus celebration with the Central Organization of Loyal Finns. Other members of the association included the Ryyth's, Hilja Jarvi, Syrjala's, Savilaakso, Anna Wallace to name a few. All were early immigrants to Winnipeg.
