The Honourable Hazen Robert ARGUE

6 January 1921 – 2 October 1991

The Argue family came to Ottawa from Ireland in 1821 and has had many prominent members over 9 generations, including Dr Thomas Herbert Argue, country doctor and inventor; Dr Andrew William Argue, former chancellor of University Saskatchewan; and Fletcher Argue, for whom the Arts and Science Building of University Manitoba was named.

Hazen Argue was born in Kayville, Saskatchewan, in 1921. Upon graduating from high school, he enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan in 1940. He graduated in 1944 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture.

His political career started the following year. That year he decided to run as the CCF candidate for Wood Mountain.

Hazen was elected and went to Ottawa. He was a Member of Parliament from 1945 to 1963 for Assiniboia (formerly Wood Mountain), Saskatchewan, and was Parliament's youngest member when he entered. Argue was the only opposition member from Saskatchewan to survive the Diefenbaker sweep in 1958. Argue managed to hold on to his seat and remained the only CCF MP from Saskatchewan.

From 1961 to 1962 he was with the New Democratic party at which time Hazen crossed the floor in the House of Commons to become a Liberal MP arguing that divisions were rife in the NDP and that farmer's interests were overwhelmed by those of Labour. He was re-elected as a Liberal MP in 1962 but was defeated in 1963 and again in 1965. In 1966, Argue was appointed to the Senate as a Liberal.

In the 1980 election when the Liberal Party failed to win any seats in the House of Commons from ridings west of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Hazen was appointed to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's Cabinet from 1980 to 1984 as Minister of State (Canada Wheat Board).
