Claus HAMPTON - Gertrude M. Claus, 97, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Seacoast Health Center, where she had resided since 1989. She was born Oct. 21, 1903, in Carsonville, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of the late John and Alwilda M. (Parlee) Leiper. She had resided in Methuen, Mass., from 1931 until 1986, when she moved to Hampton. She attended schools in Canada and was a 1926 graduate of Lawrence (Mass.) General Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Claus was a registered nurse at Lawrence General Hospital before she became the nursing supervisor at the former Greenwood, Blenwood and Broadway nursing homes in Methuen. She was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church, the Lawrence General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and the Hampton Senior Citizens. She was a former member of the United Methodist Church of Lawrence. The widow of Carl E. Claus, who died in 1989, she is survived by one son and his wife, the Rev. C. Edward and Carol Claus of York, Maine; three grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. She lived in Reading, Mass. for many years prior to moving to Westborough. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, in 1978. Blacklock WOOLWICH, Maine - John N. Blacklock, 76, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 at his home in Woolwich after a long illness. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on Jan. 19, 1924, the son of Dr. Nielson and Muriel DeJersey-White Blacklock. He attended the prestigious Bishops College School and later received a master's degree in mathematics from McGill University. He served in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces during World War II and later in their groundbreaking expeditions into the Arctic territories, going on yearlong treks to build landing strips and base camps. He ended his military career in 1950 after receiving the distinguished King George's Medal as well as the French and German Star. In April of 1961 he married Dorothy Skelley. They emigrated to the United States following their marriage and made their home in Pennsylvania. He became a naturalized citizen in 1966. They also lived in Charleston, S.C., and New Hampshire before moving to Georgetown, Maine, in 1994. For the last two and a half years they have made their home with his daughter, Mrs. Kelly (Sophie) Baker in Woolwich. He was known as an expert sailor and the picture his closest friends have of him is at the wheel of a sailboat, navigating his way up and down the Atlantic coast or any other body of water he could find. He was a competitive target shooter and volunteered a great deal of his time with the New Hampshire Junior Shooters' Association in an effort to teach young people firearm safety. He was also an avid reader. Surviving are his wife; his daughter and son-in-law; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Sidney (Elizabeth) Rawlinson Sundell of Enosburg Falls, Vt.; a stepson and his wife, Brian and Julie Fowle of England; a half-sister, Alexandra Wallis of Montreal; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Born in Inverness, (Cape Breton) Nova Scotia, Canada, March 7, 1914, she was the youngest daughter of Alexander and Margaret (Gillis) MacDougall. Her deceased sisters and brothers include Mary Ann, Mary Sarah, Colin, Angus and Alexander. She had on living stepsister, Ann MacDougall of Nova Scotia. She immigrated to Boston in 1930 and married John MacLeod in 1933. They were married for 51 years, having lived in Dorchester, Natick and Newton, Mass. They moved to New Hampshire in 1974 after John retired from the Boston Globe. He passed away in 1984. The couple had seven children. Surviving sons and daughters include John A. MacLeod of Apple Valley, Minn., William C. MacLeod of Naperville, Ill., Miriam Winston of Boston, Margaret Henry of Minagra, Nicaragua, Mary Helen Corcoran of Hampton, and Bonnie Jean MacLeod of Lonetree, Colo. A daughter, Sheila, died shortly after birth in 1942. Also surviving are 17 loving grandchildren, Tracie, Jeanette, John, Michael, David, Theodore, Alex, Jennifer, Angus, Teryl Lee, William, Christopher, Katherine, Ellen, Molly, Heather and Jason; 20 great-grandchildren; and very close nephews and nieces including Tom Chamberlain of Saugus, Mass., Alexander and Hugh MacDougall of Nova Scotia; Yvonne King of Derry, Sandra Harquail of New Brunswick, and Colina LeBlanc of Nova Scotia. She was predeceased by two fine sons-in-law, Maynard Winston of Boston, and Paul Corcoran of Hampton. She was considered a consultant in family studies with an honorary degree from the University of Cape Breton at Inverness, Nova Scotia. She will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, neighbor and caring friend to all. MacLEOD - Katherine A.
