The Carbine Family of Michigan Bar
![]()

Carbine family at the "old" Michigan Bar ranch. circa 1894-1895
The James Carbine Family, children and grandchildren lived on a
ranch off Michigan Bar Road, in eastern Sacramento County near Ione Road. This
picture is a great tribute to the times and it's obvious the family is dressed in their
"Sunday" best. The women's dresses are "dressier" than daily wear and
the young man on the right is in a suit. Little "Ruby" is dressed in a
beautiful white dress. Could this have been her christening day?
In the picture, the "babe-in-arms" is Margaret (a.k.a. "Retta" to her family or "Maggie" or "Marge" as she called herself variously in adulthood); the toddler is Ruby and the seated woman between them is their mother, Kate MacVey Carbine. Kate's husband Steve is seated next to her bowler hat.. Jim Carbine is in the far left of the picture and his wife Bridget Carbine, is the elder lady seated by the two dogs. Molly Carbine Locart is on the far right surrounded by her children; girls are her daughters by Lockart and the boy to her right is her son by Mr. Flavell.
James (Jim) Carbine and his wife Bridget were early settlers of the Consumes River Valley. Jim and Bridget are both buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery near Rancho Murieta as are many other Carbine family members. James' grave is unmarked though it assumed to be nearby his wife Bridget.
Carbine, Bridget Mary 1826 - 1902
Molly (Carbine) Locart(Lockart) first
married Mr.Flavell (first name unknown). She was the family delight and lived well
into her 90's.
