From the heart of early California, Sloughhouse is
ideally situated in the "Cosumnes River Valley" of
(Northern) Central California. The hills around Sloughhouse had Miwok Indians, miners,
cowboys and even bandits among the early inhabitants. Today, their ghostly legends are all
that remain.
SAGS, as we are affectionally known as, was established nearly 20 years ago and there have
been many "graduates". Today, there are approximately 20 members in our group
and we are researching many different families. Literally, you can say, we are researching
from "A to Z"! Sometimes we are also looking for lost
items/memories from our family or may have found something that belongs to your family.
Take a peek at the Lost & Found section.
We meet once a week to share stories and new relatives found through our tenacious
research. Members in our group are searching different states such as Arkansas,
California, Kentucky, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and New York. We also have members doing
research for family in Europe.
Our small community lies at the foothills of California's northern Sierra Nevada mountain
range. In the winter, snow covered peaks dot the landscape to the east. Sloughhouse and Rancho Murieta are basically "in the
country". Though the city is close, we are fortunate to still feel like we
"are in the country". In the surrounding hills there are cows and horses
or creatures of nature such as deer, owls, rabbits and even a mountain lion or two. The
Cosumnes River flows through our valley and could tell many stories about the early
miners. The land around this area is filled with mine tailings and serves as a reminder of
days gone by whenever someone tries to plant something in their yard. Mine tailings are
basically "rocks" that were dredged from the river to reach the gold. The rocks
range in size from several ounces to several pounds and can cause havoc on the
neighborhoods around here during spring planting!
Members in our group are researching many different families; currently there are about 200 surnames that are actively being researched. Please browse our list of surnames and queries; your surnames may be ours. Sloughhouse AGS has logged and transcribed inscriptions from local area cemeteries. The cemetery list contains approximately 500 surnames of those buried in the cemeteries.
Our Mission Statement
Sloughhouse Area Genealogical Society shall help provide assistance in learning how to preserve family history; shall aid in the understanding of available resources for research purposes; and, shall help to promote interest in the preservation and study of family origins.

The USGenWeb Project
We strongly support the USGenWeb Project and their efforts. The USGenWeb project is an ongoing effort to make genealogical research material as available as possible. Several efforts include online census, cemetery information, etc. Every state, and nearly every county, has a site. The USGenWeb is a non-profit organization and is here to help us all. Many of the state and county archives are available for viewing at Rootsweb. Take time to visit the sites.
