Volunteer Opportunities

The Historical Society operates by volunteers and is only as good as its  participants.  Please take a look at the opportunities that we have for you to help to continue in making this Organization one of the best.   If you are interested or have questions, please contact   Hetty McMann or leave your name and message at (408) 615-2986.

Newsletter Mailers

The Newsletter Mailing Committee is looking for people to help fold, tape and label newsletters. The Committee meets in the library from 9:00 to 11:00 am on the 3rd Friday of each month, excluding July and November.

Greeters for General Meetings

We need volunteers to greet visitors at the door and have them sign in for meetings. If you are a member and would like to do this, please arrive at 6:30 pm on the day of the meeting and add your name to the sign up sheet available at the meetings .

Book Cart Monitor

1 or 2 people who can come to all the meetings and bring down the book cart before the meeting, collect the donations and give it to our Treasurer, and return the book cart to the workroom after the meetings. Please add your name to the list on the sign up sheet available at the meetings.

Indexers

There currently two projects that are looking for volunteers to help Index.

  • Kathy Hill is indexing the early Santa Clara birth, death, and marriage records from the film in the library. This project will need to be done in the library, but you can set your own hours.

  • SCCHGS member, Kristin Rivers has begun an indexing project of Oak Hill Memorial Park's Cemetery. With the goal to preserve the genealogically significant information the Cemetery's records contain, this HUGE, long-term project is benefiting from the collaboration of volunteers from the Silicon Valley Computer Genealogy Group as well as our amazing SCCHGS members. Negotiations regarding the publication of the records are still in progress. But once completed, volunteers will be needed to transcribe and photograph tombstones and to digitize SCCHGS' microfilm of their prior Oak Hill walk-through. If you would like to know how the project is progressing and to be contacted once Kristin is ready to ask for more volunteers, please join the Oak Hill Cemetery Indexing Project Yahoo Group by sending email to: ohcip-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

  • New Publications Chairperson

The Publication Committee gathers and preserves abstracts, indexes and other genealogical records which are posted on our website or published and sold to interested researchers. We are looking for someone to head up this committee and also volunteers to work on the committee as typists and checkers.

    Back up person

Positions such as Newsletter Editor, Program Chair, Webmaster, Treasurer, perform very specific jobs vital to the organization. We would like to have volunteers who can step in if one of these people can’t do that job for some reason, like illness or vacation. We have people who are doing those jobs now and they are willing to work with you and train you so that you have some experience before you would actually need to do the job.
