Topic: We Were Foxhole Buddies :
How I used records from the
National Archives and National Personnel Records Center
to illuminate my father’s WWII army history.
Kay Gutknecht has been working on her family’s genealogy
for over 25 years and has always been fascinated by the historical
context of her ancestors’ lives. She recently completed a 1000+ page
book on her father’s WWII army service, and in July 2008, spoke to the
SCCHGS regarding techniques used to created and self-publish it for
family and friends. Kay holds a degree in History from the University
of California at San Diego and currently manages an operational
benchmark program for Stanford Hospital and Clinics in Palo Alto,
California.
Do you wonder if some of those family war stories are
really true? Do you wish you knew what you ancestor’s military unit did
during the war? Would you like to retrace your ancestor’s steps through
the battlefields? Do you wish you could find some of his war buddies?
Learn from one genealogist who researched records at both the National
Archives in College Park, Maryland and the National Personnel Records
Center in St. Louis to uncover details of her father’s military service
and the names of the men in his unit. Although the focus of the talk
will be on WWII army records, the principles discussed will apply to
other military service branches.
The program will explain:
- What records are available at each location.
- What information the records contain.
- How the records work together to tell a story.
- Protocols for gaining access to the records.
- How to prepare for your onsite visit!
Come, and be inspired!
