2 CONT James was son of a wealthy Enniskillen merchant, John Caldwell.  This
2 CONT enabled the Caldwell family to "handle import and export trade with with
2 CONT their fleet of boats and cots via Ballyshannon in the west, and overland,
2 CONT via Dublin in the east."
2 CONT "The Caldwells had originally come to Fermanagh from Ayrshire in Scotland
2 CONT and were of strong Portestant belief. Sir James Caldwell who had become
2 CONT baronet on June 23rd, 1683, had greatly increased the family wealth since

2 CONT to be laid out of the lands in Cavan which he formerly had and had

2 CONT George who died in Amelia County, provides for the schooling of a

2 CONT !"David Caldwell (1725-1824) was a Presbyterian minister, a self-trained
2 CONT physician, and an early educator in colonial North Carolina. Caldwell was
2 CONT born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and served as a carpenter's
2 CONT apprentice and journeyman before he underwent a religious conversion at
2 CONT age 25. He began his theological studies under Reverend Robert Smith at
2 CONT Pequea Academy in Pennsylvania, then enrolled in the College of New
2 CONT Jersey (now Princeton), where he graduated in 1761. Caldwell was ordained
2 CONT a Presbyterian minister on July 6, 1765 and was soon sent as a missionary
2 CONT to North Carolina.

2 CONT "In 1766, David Caldwell was called to serve as a minister to two
2 CONT Presbyterian churches, Alamance and Buffalo, in what was to become
2 CONT Guilford County. One year later, he opened his "Log College" academy near

2 CONT acquaintance from Pennsylvania, Rachel (1742-1825) was the daughter of

2 CONT "Mrs. Caldwell had a reputation as a devout and pious woman who served as

2 CONT intimately involved in the education of students at the school. David

2 CONT Caldwell made the scholars, but Mrs. Caldwell made the
2 CONT preachers."

2 CONT "David Caldwell's influence in North Carolina's development was profound.
2 CONT He attempted to negotiate a peace between the rebellious backcountry
2 CONT farmers and the Colonial Government during the War of the Regulation in
2 CONT 1771.

2 CONT "Caldwell also served as one of five Guilford County delegates in the
2 CONT fifth Provincial Congress of 1776. The five delegates were all members of
2 CONT Buffalo Church. North Carolina's first constitution was adopted at that
2 CONT Provincial Congress of 1776. Caldwell successfully organized the adoption
2 CONT of a very restrictive religious test for holding elective offices in
2 CONT North Carolina.

2 CONT "Throughout the American Revolution, Caldwell was a vocal supporter of
2 CONT the patriot cause. As a result, he was hunted by British troops during
2 CONT the 1781 campaign in North Carolina that culminated in the Battle of
2 CONT Guilford Courthouse. Rachel put up strong resistance to British attempts
2 CONT to capture her husband and sack her home in 1781. One story tells of her
2 CONT wrestling away a tablecloth from a British soldier. Following the Battle
2 CONT of Guilford Courthouse, the Caldwells worked tirelessly treating the
2 CONT wounded soldiers of General Nathanael Greene's army. After the war,
2 CONT Caldwell voted against ratification in the Convention that rejected the
2 CONT federal constitution.

2 CONT "Caldwell retired from Buffalo and Alamance Churches in 1820 and
2 CONT continued to educate students until his death in 1824. Rachel Caldwell
