2 CONT their marriage they had lived in Lemoore, Kings County, where they had a
2 CONT dairy ranch; in Turlock, Stanislaus County; in Garden Grove, Los Angeles
2 CONT County; and in Fresno.  The girls lived for a while with their
2 CONT grandmother Bobst (Rosa Amelia Ellison Bobst) in Turlock until the
2 CONT divorce was final.  Then they returned to Sonoma County where Jessie
2 CONT worked at a hotel in Geyserville.  Jessie remarried John (Jack) S.
2 CONT Senteney, 1 July 1913 (record in Napa County).  The family worked in the
2 CONT fruit in Vacaville, Solano County and in Competche, Mendocino County. 
2 CONT Next they returned to Cloverdale and later moved to Healdsburg, then to
2 CONT Santa Rosa.  Jack died in 1955 of cancer (Sonoma County record). Jessie's
2 CONT will is on file at Sonoma County Clerk's Office (Book 136:141). Her death
2 CONT certificate on file in Sonoma County Recorder's Office, under name of
2 CONT Jessie M. Senteney (registration # 4900-1716).  Died of coronary
2 CONT insufficiency, arteriosclerosis.

1 NOTE !According to one biographical account, Ralph was brought up in his
2 CONT father's freighter or teamster business that serviced mining centers in
2 CONT the Shenandoah Valley of VA, (Bay of San Francisco, see complete
2 CONT reference in notes of son, James).  Ralph is first found in the personal
2 CONT property tax records in Shenandoah County, VA in 1807, near Obediah, Sr.
2 CONT and Obediah, Jr., almost certainly his father and brother.  His marriage
2 CONT in 1809 is recorded in "Shenandoah County, VA Marriage Bonds, 1772-1850,"
2 CONT compiled by Bernice M. Ashby, Berryville, VA: Virginia Book Co., 1967, p.
2 CONT 235.  He served in the War of 1812 and appears on muster rolls of the 4th
2 CONT Regiment of the VA Militia between 18 July 1814 and 31 January 1815 under
2 CONT Capts. Samuel Hopewell and John Sloan, as a private in the infantry
2 CONT (Federal Archives).  The first tax record found in OH for his family is
2 CONT on the personal property tax list of Belmont County in 1826 and 1827 when
2 CONT Peggy (Margaret) McFarland is listed in Somerset twp.  Ralph is listed
2 CONT for 1830 through 1834 and appears on the 1830 census for Somerset twp (p.
2 CONT 350).  Their arrival is fixed sometime prior to 27 July 1825 when court
2 CONT records show the indictment of Ralph for "shooting with intent to
2 CONT murder," one Thomas Patterson and John Bruce, the town constable.  He was
2 CONT found guilty and sentenced to five years in the State Penitentiary of
2 CONT Ohio (Belmont County, Court of Common Pleas, Book 8:196-199).  Tax
2 CONT records would seem to indicate he was released by 1829. However, Ralph
2 CONT disappears from the scene before 1840, as in that census year Margaret
2 CONT McFarland appears as head of household in Somerset twp. (p. 19) with
2 CONT three males age 5 to 20; William and Joseph McFarland, 20-30, are nearby

2 CONT CA in 1849.  The 1860 census of Napa County, CA, shows the birth of
2 CONT daughter, Sarah in OH about 1841 and John, William, Mary and Rachael in
2 CONT IA between about 1846 and 1851; and Charles and Rosa in CA in 1854 and
2 CONT 1857 (p. 16).  James went by himself to CA and remained for three years
2 CONT before returning to get his family; he arrived back in CA with family in

2 CONT He tried mining in Nevada County for a while; lived briefly in Knights

2 CONT growing grapes and making wine the rest of his life.  His death

2 CONT !Napa County records show that he bought his first piece of property
2 CONT there (36 acres) 19 December 1862 (Napa County, DB K:33).  On 21 February
2 CONT 1871, he bought an additional 15 acres from Charles Krug (Napa County DB
2 CONT P:425).  Then on 3 August 1887, he declared it a Homestead (Homestead
2 CONT Book B:93).  He served Jury Duty September term, 1875, along with H.W.
2 CONT Hackney (Napa Reporter, 7 August 1875); & the District Court for the term
2 CONT beginning 5 February 1878 (Napa County Reporter, 18 January 1878, p.
2 CONT 3:3).  The Napa Register carried notice that he had given property near
2 CONT St. Helena to John W. McFarling, 17 February 1883 (p. 3:5).  He was a
2 CONT Director of the Methodist Episcopal Church (Napa Register, 10 April 1885,
2 CONT p. 1).  His death was due to consumption (Napa Register, 10 January 1890,
2 CONT p. 4:2).  His obituary stated he had first located at Barks Bar, Yuba
2 CONT County in 1849 for a time; then moved to Knights Valley until 1862.

2 CONT early 1850s, then went to Nevada City, CA arriving 24 August 1854.  He
2 CONT did placer- mining until 1863, then became general superintendent and
2 CONT part owner of the Juniper and Mount Hope mines in Lassen County, which
2 CONT were leased to working miners.  In 1879 he bought 150 acres of farming
2 CONT land near Calistoga, Napa County, where he bred fancy poultry, including
2 CONT blue Andalusians, golden Wyandots, Rose-combs, and brown and white
2 CONT Leghorns.  Listed as living in Oakland, CA as of 1892 (Bay of San
2 CONT Francisco, see notes of brother, James, for complete reference).  He is
2 CONT credited with having found the American Mine on Pine Mountin about seven
2 CONT miles Southwest of Middletown in Lake County. Apparently, he did not work
2 CONT it, but sold out prior to 1871 when it was worked by Lawley, Lamdin,
2 CONT Perchbaker, and others [C.A. Menefee, "Historical and Descriptive Sketch
2 CONT Book of Napa, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino," (Napa, CA: Reporter Publishing
2 CONT House, 1873), p. 234].

1 NOTE !Very little is known of Eva Ruth Moore other than the vital data given
2 CONT in her family group sheet.  However, some clues are offered by a query
2 CONT found in the Los Angeles library written by Mamie Castner Hurley, 312
2 CONT East 2nd Street, Seattle 15, Washington (no date given, but was obviously
2 CONT before zip codes (Mamie is said to have been a cousin to Eva Josephine
2 CONT McFarling).
2 CONT The message reads, "Want ancestry of Eva Ruth Moore and younger brother,
2 CONT Tom Moore.  Eva Ruth Moore b. Sept. 13, 1820, Muskingum Co., Ohio, m.
2 CONT Sept. 1842, Muskingum Co., Ohio to James McFarland, (name changed to
2 CONT "McFarling" in California).  The McFarlands lived near Mt. Pleasant, Iowa
2 CONT until 1853- 54 when they went to California by wagon train.  Tom Moore
2 CONT went part way but left and was supposed to have gone to "Oregon
2 CONT territory" (?).  Eva Ruth and Tom Moore lost both parents early in life."
2 CONT  A will for John Moore, of Jefferson twp, Muskingum County, dated 1
2 CONT January 1832, has been found (LDS film #847941, will records,
2 CONT guardianship administrations A-C 1804- 1843).  It refers to, but does not
2 CONT name, minor children.  He owned 128 acres "to be kept and not disposed of
2 CONT for my children to live on until the younger become the age of one and
2 CONT twenty."  He also refers to a tract of land in Hopewell Twp., Washington
2 CONT Co., PA, to be sold by any of his children. He names brothers Robert and
2 CONT James Moore as executors.  No wife is mentioned.  Eva Ruth is listed in

2 CONT 1895, p. 3:5).  According to it, she had married (2) William J. Caughey
2 CONT in July 1890, had one son, Ernest E. Fruits, who was a clerk in Mr.
2 CONT Caughey's grocery.  She had been in sanitariums in Oakland and Lytton
2 CONT Springs, "but nothing could stay the progress of the deadly disese from
2 CONT which she suffered," (tuberculosis?). The obit gives her date of birth as
2 CONT 1856 in CA, but the 1860 census of Napa County states she was 9 years old
2 CONT in 1860 and born in IA.  The obit also refers to her sister, Mrs.
2 CONT McArthur (Sarah) of Calistoga.

2 CONT appeared in the Napa Daily Journal, relating the details of his death.

1 NOTE !What little is known about Alice Victoria (Hackney) McFarling comes from
2 CONT her youngest child, Charlotte, who was born the day her father was
2 CONT buried.  The young family lived with Elizabeth Lynn (Jenkins) Hackney,
2 CONT mother and grandmother, who by this time was widowed.  They are found in
2 CONT the 1900 census in Hot Springs, Napa County, CA (ED #87, Sheet 7, Line
2 CONT 61). Living in the home were the eight youngest children, aged 2 to 18. 
2 CONT The family returned to Sonoma County about 1991 in the  Forestville area
2 CONT near the older married children.  But the only way the family could make
2 CONT their living was to follow the agricultural crops in Northern California.
2 CONT  Her death certificate, is on file in Napa County, CA.  She is listed in
2 CONT St. Helena Cemetery Records (LDS film # G-874353).   Marriage (14 January
2 CONT 1877) notice is found in the Napa County Reporter, 27 Janury 1877, p.

2 CONT and brother, Uriah, at his father's death in 1794 (Order Book P:326).  He
