VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
AT THE SAN DIEGO GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY The San
Diego Genealogical Society is an all volunteer organization. Volunteers
run every aspect of the Society, from teaching beginning
genealogy classes to processing new materials at the Society's research
library and everything in between. Combine your enthusiasm for genealogy
and family history with your desire to make a contribution to your community.
There is a volunteer position at the San Diego Genealogical Society
just right for you.
Here
are some of the fun volunteer jobs to be had at the SDGS
Library. Training is provided for whatever task interests you.
Contact the Library
Director for more information or to volunteer.
Community Outreach Coordinate the SDGS community outreach program. Schedule group visits to the SDGS Library. Conduct Library orientations for new members Inter-library loan coordinator Librarians assistant Choose a day and come in for a couple hours one day a week or every other week which ever best fits your schedule. The work would vary but would include helping the librarian with multiple aspects of the library operation. Ongoing general library projects Come in on your own schedule and work on a general library project. You could be assigned a specific task that you do each time or you could help on the task of the day whichever suits your fancy. You pick the day and time. Ongoing library data entry projects Come in on your own schedule and work on a specific project that involves data entry for a records extraction project. Projects are ongoing and need volunteers to make these valuable records available to genealogical researchers. Periodical collection management Thursday library staff Thursday is the day the library is open to the public. Make a commitment to work one 3-hour shift per month, the same Thursday each month (i.e. first Thursday, second Thursday, etc.), either 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There are two volunteers on staff per shift. These volunteers help members and visitors (often non-members and people new to genealogy) to the library. These volunteers also help with miscellaneous library projects.
