1891 Nova Scotia Census
INDEX OF "SMALL" OCCUPATION CODES:
There are several problems connected with the "OCCUPATION" field
in the 1891 Census enumeration. Foremost is the promiscuous use
of ditto marks, making it difficult to determine when they are
"intended" and when "accidental". Secondly, there are numerous
instances where a person is enumerated as a "wage earner" and no
occupation listed. Thirdly, there is a sort of "coding",
obviously a post-enumeration effort, which applies a "CODE",
(usually two character, occasionally more) in the rightmost area
of the "occupation" field. The code is applied to individuals who
were enumerated with occupations, and to those without. However,
not all "occupations" are so coded; nor is it apparent what
criteria might have been applied in selecting those coded versus
those not coded.
Nonetheless, this "post-enumeration" coding does shed some
additional light on occupations, and is included in the
"OCCUPATION" field, at the rightmost zone, in this listing.
The coding was apparently done by the same person, for many of the
Districts. Unfortunately, it is not very legible. A listing of
the codes, with the corresponding full "OCCUPATION", follows.
This listing was made from examination of many Districts, but is
not presumed to be complete, or even accurate. It is offered as a
"HELP", without guarantees.

"n" codes seem to be different... many are not true "occupations".
Many seem to apply to female wage earners, perhaps to jobs like
"milkmaid" or "butter maker", etc.
