LIBRARY NEWS

Janet Franks, our new Librarian, announced that we still are looking for a volunteer to fill the new position of Chairman of Docents. Remember, this job involves only phoning and scheduling of volunteer docents. It does not involve actual time at the library desk and can easily be done at home. So, if any of you would like to help out in this capacity, please call Janet at (949) 496-8428.

Note: The library will be closed on July 13th for an in-sevice day.

LIST OF CDs NOW AVAILABLE AT LIBRARY

As of June first, our library has a collection of approximately 80 CDs, mostly from Family Tree Maker, available for your research. These CDs offer extensive databases for Marriage Records, Land Records, Military Records, Passenger/Immigration Lists, Vital Records and Family Histories.

A descriptive sheet is also available on each CD which gives you a detailed account of what it contains. Be sure to read coming issues of the newsletter, as we will be listing all of these CDs by FTM Archive number with their titles and a brief summary of their content. With our bookshelves filling up, these CDs offer us a tremendous amount of data for a very small storage space.

LIBRARY WEB SITES - Repeats and Corrections

If you read last month's newsletter, you may have noticed some library web sites presented. If you went so far as to try some of them, you may have had some trouble. Many of the web sites I pass along to you have come from authorities who often have written whole articles on their finds in other newsletters and periodicals. I do not have time to check them all out, but our web master, Herb Abrams, has checked some of them for me and finds some deficient. Of course, there is always the possibility that a web site has changed, but you might keep in mind that, if you cannot reach one, you may simply need to add "www." or a period where there is a slash or some other obvious correction of a typo. The following represent verified web sites for libraries which should be of interest.

WAR CASUALTY LIST

Our webmaster, Herb Abrams, reports that the sites we previously referenced from the HI-Desert Genealogical Society April newsletter did not work. He has provided the following instructions:

For WWII Honor List of Dead & Missing Army & Army Air Force Personnel, 1946, arranged by state and county, alphabetically, go to http://www.nara.gov/nara/searchnail.html, do a NAIL standard Search on "NWCTM-407"; when you pullup the state you want, click on "links to digital copies."

For PearlHarbor Casualty List, go to:

http://www.mit.edu:8001/afs/athena/activity/a/afrotc/www/names

If that doesn't work, try:

AN INTERESTING LIBRARY

For those of you interested in German research, the Immigrant Genealogical Library in Burbank should be added to your Safari list. Originally privately funded by its founders, it is now supported by the Immigrant Genealogical Society which offers research for Americans for a small fee. This library, located at 1310 Magnolia Blvd., Burbank, CA, is best known for its sizable collection of German materials which are not easily found elsewhere. It is open to the public Wed. 12-5 pm, Sat. 10-5 pm, and Sun. 12-5 pm, for a donation of $2 per visit, - free to society members. Membership dues are $20/yr. and includes a monthly newsletter & meetings with speakers, classes & seminars.

Phone 818-848-3122 for further information or write to IGS, P.O. Box7369, Burbank, CA 91510.

ANOTHER LIBRARY

If you have Scottish ancestors, you may want to subscribe to a free publication, The Family Tree, published bimonthly by the Ellen Payne Odom Genealogy Library, P.O. Box 1110, Moultrie, GA 31776. According to Questing Heirs March 200 Newsletter, this library is the repository of 99 Scottish Clans and is the central source of information for those studying for Scottish heritage. Call them at (912) 985-6549 or look up their site at http://www.teleport.com/~binder/famtree.shtml.

My family tree must have been used for firewood.

PRIVACY ISSUE

A very disturbing ariticle appeared in the June 24th LA Times titled, "For Sale: Your Personal Data - Cheap, Easy, Online." Times Staff Writer, Edmund Sanders, tells us that "Experian of Orange is one of several companies offering consumer lifestyle and financial info online," charging for example just $11.75 for a list of ladies at Leisure World with annual incomes above $75,000. Similar searches are available through InfoUSA (http://www.listbazaar.com), Acxiom Corp., Equifax, and ClickAction Inc. (http://www.myprospects.com). While we struggle to unearth data on our ancestors and carefully protect the privacy of the "living", today's con-men have easy access to data to build a complete profile on us. You cannot remove your name from these databases, but you can limit the release of information by writing the Direct Marketing Association directly: 1) to be removed from mailing lists, to Mail Preferecne Service, DMA, P.O. Box 9008, Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008 2) to stop telemarketing calls, to Telephone Preference Service, DMA, P.O. Box 9014, Farmingdale, NY 11735-9014. Be sure to include the pertinent personal information and sign the letter.
