Thelma Earley, 87
February 25, 1914 - January 18, 2002



Graveside funeral services will be held at Westside District Cemetery on Thursday at noon for long time Taft Resident Thelma Early, 87. Mr. Michsel Pollack of the First Baptist Church will officiate at the services.

Mrs. Early was born in Greenfield Missouri on Feburary 25, 1914 and passed away in Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach on January 18th. Mrs. Early lived in Taft for approximately 78 years. She worked at the Kern Mutual Telephone Co. during World War II. Mrs. Earley then went to work for Taft Union High School and Taft College. She retired from the school district as a supervisor of the cafeteria in 1980. She move to Garden Grove in 2000.

Her three children, Leroy Earley, LaRay Bever, and Anita Devine, her eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren survive her.

There are no visitation hours scheduled and the services are under the direction of the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.

Dennis Edward Easley, 68

Dennis Edward Easley, December 11, 1932 to May 14, 2001. Graveside services for Dennis Edward Easley, 68, of Taft, will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2001, at West Side District Cemetery, with Pastor Paul Wayne Wilson officiating.

Dennis was born December 11, 1932, in Coal, Oklahoma to Houston and Katherine Easley. He passed away May 14, 2001 in Taft. He was retired from Western Well Service after 25 years. He was preceded in death by daughter, Denise Easley, in August of 1985.

Survivors include his wife of over 43 years, Nadene; sons, James and wife Patty of Portland, Oregon, Sam and wife Tracy, and Joseph, all of Taft; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother Ronald Easley of Taft; sisters Daisy Brown of Tulare, and Bonnie Johnson of Arkansas.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 16, from noon until 4:00 p.m. at West Side Family Mortuary, Taft.

William J. "Buck" Eason
February 7, 1919 - May 1, 2002



William "Buck" Eason, 83 died Wednesday May 1, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah. Mr. Eason was reared in Reidsville, and although his career required that he live in many part of the USA, he returned to Reidsville after his retirement in 1985. He retired from Sun Oil Co. He was a member of the RGR and served for over fifty years as a Master Mason with the Rising Sun Lodge 432. He was also a member of the Reidville United Methodist Church.

He is survived by: His wife, Wilma Barnard Eason of Reidsville: four daughters & sons-in-law, Linda and Jerry Berry of Aurora, Co, Jackie & Conrad Swenson of Denver, Co., Cindy & Johnny Moore of Olney, Texas, Phyllis Geissel of Taft, CFA. Three sisters, Lillian Eason - Virginia Kicklighter both of Riedsville. Martha Jean Smith of Orlando, Flordia. Nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Reidsville City Cemetery with Masonic Burial Rites. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Reidsvville United Methodist Church. Bradlely B. Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Iris East
August 21, 1909 - January 27, 1997



Visitation will be held in the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home Thursday from noon until 8:30 p.m. for long-time Taft resident, Iris East, 87. Private family services will be held at a later date.

Mrs. East was born in Huntington Park on August 21, 1909 and passed away at her residence the morning of January 27, 1997. She first settled in Taft in 1935. Mrs. East was a member of the First Baptist Church and worked as a volunteer at the West Side District Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard "Red" East, and her daughter, Phyllis West. Mrs. East is survived by her grandson, Louis West of Taft; her granddaughter, Kelly Rigdon of Bakersfield; her great granddaughter, Brandi Hagopian; her great grandson, Clifford Calbert; three great-great grandchildren; her son-in-law, Elwood West, all of Taft; and several dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorial donations in Mrs. East's memory be sent to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. The arrangements are under the direction of the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.

Charles "Chuck" Eastwood, 71
March 2, 1926 - May 6, 1997



Charles "Chuck" Wesley Eastwood passed away at a Redding hosptial on May 6, 1997.

Mr. Eastwood was born in St. Francisville, Louisiana on March 2, 1926. He was a long-time Taft resident and had worked for Chevron Oil Company for 35 years. Mr. Eastwood was a memberof the Taft Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Muriel Eastwood of Red Bluff; two daughters, Jayne Barnes of Wyoming and Celeste Riedemann of New Mexico; a brother, Lynn Edward Eastwood of Tehachapi; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Private services will be held at a later date. Burial services will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Red Bluff.

Audell Eaves, 74
March 25, 1927 - September 3, 2001



Graveside funeral services will be held in the West Side District Cemetery on Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. for Taft resident, Audell Eaves. Rev. Sam White, pastor of the Cuyama Assembly of God, will officiate at the services.

Mr. Eaves was born in Desloge, Missouri on March 25, 1927 and passed away at the local hospital on September 3, 2001. He was raised in Taft and moved to Santa Maria where he attended Righetti High School. During the Second World War, Mr. Eaves proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy assigned to the Seabees. He had been employed by Union Oil Company and retired as a foreman after 40 years of service. Mr. Eaves was a member of the Petroleum Production Pioneers. He was a man that truly loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Elizabeth Eaves and his sister, Hilda Locarnini. His survivors include his wife Geneva Eaves of Taft; his two daughters, Jan Dickson and Dee Morgan and her husband, Cecil all of Taft; his brothers, Ross Eaves and Roy Eaves; his sisters, Helen McCall and Darlene Videll; his five grandchildren, Tina Cash, Jeff Bolivar, Robin Coker, Carey Keene and Jeffrey Morgan and by his ten great grand children.

Friends are invited to pay their respects on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.

Olivia Ecklund, 81
January 30, 1920 - September 16, 2001



Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Community Christian Fellowship for Taft resident, Olivia Eckland, 81. Burial will follow in the West Side District Cemetery.

Mrs. Ecklund was born in Mexico on January 30, 1920 and came to the United States with her brothers and sister to live with her Great Aunt when she was orphaned at the age of 4˝. She graduated from Banning High School in Los Angeles in 1941. She married her childhood best friend, Edward P. Ecklund on October 5, 1947. Her beloved husband went to be with the Lord on November 29, 1969 when they were both 49 years old. She went on with God's help, and raised their three daughters. Her example has been a strong foundation for her children and grandchildren. She was very active during her entire life in her local church, working as the janitor and as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Recently, Community Christian Fellowship honored her by dedicating their Sunday school building to her and naming it "Olivia's Place." She also spent many years serving others, doing home health care for the elderly. Because of her loving example, many of her family and friends have come to know the Lord Jesus in a clearer, closer way.

She went home to be with the Lord, and those of her family and friends who have gone before, on September 16, 2001 at the age of 81. She passed away while at home, surrounded by her earthy family. And they wish to publicly thank Optimal Hospice for their care and help in allowing them that gift.

Mrs. Ecklund is survived by her daughters and their families: Delbert and Dixie Lee Pearson of Provo, Utah, their 10 children and spouses and 14 grandchildren, Mike and Linda Brock their children. Charles and Bonnie Brock of St. Pete Beach, Florida and their four girls, Leo and Rachael Flaharty and their son of Houston, Texas, Micky and Jennifer Brock, Manuel Landin, James and Stephanie Brock and Robert Brock all of Taft. Olivia Jean Eckland and Keith and Edie Ogborn, their children, Shane and Christine Higgins and their daughter Kacie of Taft and Rod Urey and his son Keith (Scooter); her sister-in-law; Minnie Ecklund and many other nieces, nephews cousins and close friends. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be given to Optimal Hospice in Bakersfield.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and again on Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.

Carl Winfrey Edde, 69
July 7, 1931 - March 31, 2001



Graveside services will be held at the West Side District Cemetery on April 4, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. for Derby Acres resident, Carl Winfrey Edde.

Carl was born on July 7, 1931 in Ventura, California to Lionel and Rachel Edde and passed away at the age of 69 on March 31, 2001 in a Bakersfield hospital. He was employed as an operator for the State of California Water Resources for 35 years before he retired in 1991. Carl honorably served his country in the United States Army and fought in the Korean War. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion and also the Elks Lodge. Survivors include his daughter Mary Edde and Mark Barnes of Taft, grandson Joshua Barnes of Taft and brother, Vernon Edde of Fountain Valley, California. Carl was loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed.

George Evans Eddy III
January 20, 1925 - October 9, 2003



George Evans Eddy III, 78, of New Cuyama, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2003 at a Santa Maria hospital. He was born January 20, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois.

George served as a recording engineer in the entertainment industry in Hollywood until his retirement in New Cuyama.

He is survived by his son, Jacob Evans Eddy; sisters, Delores Eddy Dunnett, and her husband, Walter Dunnett, Ph.D. and their children, Sharon Farral and Mark Dunnett; Juanita Laura Eddy Northrup and her husband Bernard E. Northrup, Th.D. and their children, Joel Northrup and Joy Northrup Thayer.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 in the Santa Maria Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Harold Dean Edgmon
November 5, 1928 - January 28, 2002



Services will be held Wednesday, January 30th at 11:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel, 9101 Kern Canyon Road for Harold Dean Edgmon of Taft California, who passed away January 28, 2002 after a long illness.

Harold Dean was born November 5, 1928 in Visalia California and eventually settled in Taft California to raise his family.

Harold Dean was in the Navy Air Force during WWII, and later became a California Highway Patrol Officer and retired after 24 years. He worked for the Taft Sanitation service, and raised hogs and cattle with his father-in-law and partner in business E. E. Haney. Harold Dean worked for the Mosquito Abatement for 19 years and belonged to many different organizations such as the Footprinters in Bakersfield. Masonic Lodge #426 in Taft. He was part of the Taft City Planning Commission, and the Kern County Grand Jury.

Harold Dean is survived by his wife Veda Edgmon, daughters Katherine Black, Pamela, and son-in-law, Stan Sweaney, brother Edward Edgmon, granddaughter, Annie Black, grandsons Joseph Black, Andrew and Sean Sweaney granddaughters-in-laws Stephanie and Karen Sweaney, and great grandsons, Joshua and Jacob Sweaney. Also many nieces and nephews and friends.

Dean accomplished such a great deal throughout his life, and his family is so very proud of him for being so strong. Anyone who knew him is greatful to have him in their lives. We'll miss you grandpa!

Services will be held Wednesday February 20 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel 9101 Kern Canyon Rd. for Veda Marie Edgmon of Taft, California, who passed away February 16, 2002 after a brief illness.

Veda was born October 30 1926 in Leedy Oklahoma. She came to Taft at the age of 2 weeks where she spent the rest of her life and raised her family. Veda worked as a bookkeeper for many years and was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter #426.

Veda was preceded in death by her loving husband Dean by 19 days, and her sister Thelma by 21 days. Veda is survived by daughters Katherine Black and Pamela Sweaney, son in-law Stan Sweaney, brother Elmer Haney, granddaughter Annie Black, grandsons Joseph Black, Andrew & Sean Sweaney, granddaughters in Law Stephanie & Karen Sweaney, great grandsons Joshua and Jacb Sweaney, and many nieces and nephews and friends.

Elizabeth Ann Edmaiston, 56, of Monmouth passed away at her home on January 18, 2001. Mrs. Edmaiston was born in Denham Springs, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Delos and Rosalee Corkern. She was an active member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Salem. Ann was a loving mother, grandmother and a friend to all she met.

Survivors include her husband, Alec, former student of Taft Schools whom she married in 1960; a son Aaron Edmaiston of Independence, a daughter Cheryl Carr of Salem; four granddaughters, Sarah and Leah Feenan, Savannah Edmaiston, and Mary Carr; her mother Rosalee Corkern of New Orleans, Louisiana; and five brother and three sisters.

A memorial service will be held at Yoshikaia Elementary School (current meeting place for Cornerstone Baptist Church), 4900 Jade Street NE, in Salem on Sunday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m.

Karissa Edwards, beloved daughter of Steve and Kay Edwards, went home to be with her Lord Saturday, November 13, 2004.

Mary Nell Edwards Slentz-Bertolucci-Garrett
May 17, 1931 - May 21, 2001



A celebration of life will be held Thursday, June 7, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Vessels of honor, 225 Chester Ave. (parking in rear). Pastors Chuck and Silvia Lack will officiate.

Mary was born to Lon "Blackie" and Lois Edwards on May 17, 1931 in Prescott, Alaska. The family then moved to Taft, California in 1937 then to Shafter where Mary graduated high school in 1949. She attended nursing school for a short time but spent her years working in the secretarial field, retiring from Tosco refinery. God gifted Mary with an ear for music. She was accomplished at the accordion and piano. A voice from heaven, she sang as a child with her family "The Edwards" and later on TV with the Cousin Herb Show and Jimmy Thomason. She was always very involved in her church playing piano and singing. Now she sings with the angels and dances the streets of gold praising her Lord.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Raymond Slentz. She is survived by husband, Charles; daughter, Raynell and son-in-law. Randy Lyons; brother Coy Edwards and wife, Leta, all of Pineville, Louisiana; daughter, Carol and son-in-law Richard States; grandchildren, Wendy Ash and Craig Taylor; three great grandchildren and stepchildren, Dwayne, Darrin and Diane, all of Bakersfield.

Mary passed away May 21, 2001 after celebrating her 70th birthday with her family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Grace Rosemary Eggert
December 28, 1931 - November 17, 2001



Rose passed on Monday to be with her Lord and Savior. She was raised in Taft and moved to Bakersfield with her husband Tom. Together they raised six children. Rose was a unique lady with a zest for life. She was preceded in death by her husband Tom, sons Danny and David, her parents and three sisters.

Rose is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Terry and Roy Burlingame, Lynn and Steve Russom, daughter Ellen Eggert, daughter-in-law Claudia Eggert, son and daughter-in-law Tommy Eggert and Anne Siems. Also grandchildren Nicole Eggert, Jennifer Soto, Ty Soto, Craig Barnard, Karen Barnard, Tricia and husband Mike Carroll, Megan and husband Ron Hemphill. Great grandchildren Kaitlynn Carroll and Noah Hemphill and two on the way. Numerous nieces and nephews and many others that she thought of a as family.

Special thanks to Kate and Cheryl and all the loving care people at Hoffman Hospice. Rose taught us all that life is too short and there are many roads to Heaven. Services will be held Saturday, November 17th, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church, Stockdale Hwy. Bakersfield, California.

Leon Paul Eggleston
July 27, 1977 - June 26, 2012



Leon was born in Merced, California on July 27, 1977 and passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on June 26, 2012 just one month short of his 35th birthday. Leon graduated from Vista West in 1995. Left to Cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Jackie; 3 children, Jordyn, Angel and Brayden; mother, Anna Eggleston of Taft; father, Paul Eggleston of Salt Lake City, Utah; 9 siblings; Lily, LeGrand, Lisa, Luke, Laura, Linda, Lynell, Lance and Lee (Mike).

He loved his job operating heavy equipment and providing for his family. He met his wife Jackie at church where he found a relationship with his Savior. Leon had a passion for motorcycles and snowboarding. He was a wonderful father and would let his daughters paint his fingernails and toenails.

Services will be held at Calvary Bible Church, 48 Manor Street, Bakersfield, California at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012.

Bob lived in Cuyama, California in his youth and resided in Bakersfield, California.

A loving husband to Brenda K. Ehly, father to Mark (Deceased) Shannon, Jr. Tim, Paula, Harold, Suzie, Carl, Ginny. Grandfather to 13, great grandfather to 8, cousin and friend. We miss you and love you.

Charles Wesley Eiland, 91
October 18, 1909 - June 1, 2001



Charles Wesley Eiland was born in Fresno, California on October 18, 1909. He came to Taft at the age of 2 weeks where he remained the rest of his life.

Wes was educated in the Taft School system from Conley thru Taft High; at one time Wes was the youngest Eagle Scout in the United States with 49 merit badges to his credit. He enjoyed playing football and was well known for it, including many victories and championships.

After high school he went to work at the Taft Lumber Company he enjoyed relating stories about hauling lumber to build Cuyama. Mr. Eiland then went to work at Honolulu Oil Company for 25 years then worked for Getty for 20 years until retirement. Wes was a super mechanic and enjoyed leading his family thru years of racing.

Wes was preceded in death by his beloved wife Helen, his son John, his grandson Thomas Parcel and a great granddaughter Sara Eiland. Wes leaves a loving family, daughter Barbara Parcel, son Jim Eiland and wife Lucille, granddaughter and husband Linda & Ron Starkey, grandson’s and wives, Tim and Kim Parcel, Ted and Barbara Parcel and David and Pat Eiland, and granddaughter’s and husbands Judy and Lynn Garner, Cheyl and Danny Neudorf, his youngest grandchildren Charles Wesley Eiland and James Curtis Eiland. Ten great grandchildren and six great, great grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Brian Parcel will officiate at his services on Friday June 22nd, at 9:00 a.m. at the West Side Cemetery.

John

John Wesley Eiland, 68
May 11, 1932 - January 11, 2001



John Wesley Eiland was born in Taft, on May 11, 1932 to Wes and Helen Eiland. He passed away at home on January 11, 2001. A Texaco employee for 41 years, John progressed through the Taft school system, having graduated from Taft High School in 1950 and later from Taft College. He was known as an excellent football player, affectionately called Cork for his ability to plug the holes. He joined the Navy after college and received an honorary discharge returning home to Taft.

John was well known for the beautiful street rods he built, as well as racecars and racecar engines. John, Wes and Jim formed a successful racecar team that won over a 20 year period of time.

John also enjoyed camping, fishing and boating with family at his favorite spots such as Eagle Lake, Tuolumne Meadows and Oceano.

He is survived by his father, Wes; his son, David and his wife, Pat; his daughter and her husband, Judi and Lynn Gamer; his sister Barbara Parcel; his brother and his wife, Jim and Lucile; his grandchildren Cindy, Michael, and Jenifer Eiland; his two great grandchildren and by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen, and by his granddaughter, Sarah.

Michael David Eiland
April 29, 1980 - September 2, 2012



Michael was born on April 29, 1980 in Taft, California to David William Eiland and Connie Louis Eiland. Michael passed away suddenly in Bakersfield on September 2, 2012.

Michael enjoyed his 3 cats, gold panning with dad at the Kern River and BBQ's with friends. He was a wonderful person and liked by all - he will be deeply missed.

Michael attended Taft Schools throughout elementary and junior high and attended Taft Union High School until his junior year. The remaining part of high school, he finished at Clovis West, graduating in June 1998. Later years, Michael went on to become a successful electrician.

Michael is survived by his wonderful and loving father, David William Eiland and his wife, Patricia Eiland of Taft, his sister Cindy M. Eiland his nieces Liliana Marie Diarte of Bakersfield and Brooklyn Marie Jennings of Taft, his nephew, Evaristo Diarte Jr. of Taft, his sister and brother-in-law, Scott and Jennifer Lynch of Taft, his aunt and uncle Lynn and Judi Garner of Taft, his uncle James McConnell, grandparents Ray and Ruth Conner of Oakhurst, and his great grandmother Ruth Hopkins of Oakhurst. Michael was proceeded in death by his loving mother Connie Louise Carroll (Eiland) and his little sister, Sarah Marie Eiland.

Graveside funeral services will be held for Taft resident, Michael David Eiland, 32. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 12, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the West Side Memorial Services, Sunset Chapel - Taft. Sarah was born in Taft on April 23, 1982 to David and Connie Eiland, and passed away August 18, 1997, at Fresno, as a result of a double murder.

Sarah is survived by her father and his wife, David and Patricia Eiland, of Taft; Cindy Eiland and Evaristo Diarte of Bakersfield; her brother, Michael Eiland, of Fresno; her little sister, Jennifer Eiland, of Taft; her sisters, Patrice and Denise Clark of Oklahoma; her great grandfather, Wesley Eiland; her grandfather John Eiland, of Taft; a great grandmother, Ruth Hopkins; grandparents Ruth and Ray Connor of Oakhurst; grandfather Clyde Carrol of Texas; aunt Judy and uncle Lynn Garner of Taft; uncle James McConnell of Goleta; aunt Dallas Perez of New Hampshire; three nieces; Liliana Marie Diarte of Bakersfield, and Robin and Alexandra Clark of Oklahoma; one nephew, Joshua Daniel Clark of Oklalhoma; several great aunts, uncles and cousins, all of Tfft; and all of her firends, both of Taft and Fresno. Sarah was preceded in death by her great grandmother, Helen Eiland of Taft; her grandmother, Beverly Carroll, of Ventura; a brother, Danny Clark, of Oklahoma; and her aunt, Stacy, of New Hampshire.

Visitation will be Monday, August 25th from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Chapel services will be in the Sunset Chapel at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday August 26th. Burial will be in the West Side District Cemetery. Charles Duane Ekdahl
February 18, 1942 - April 18, 2010



Charles Duane Ekdahl was born February 18, 1942 in Sacramento, California. He passed away while in Manila, Philippines on April 18, 2010. He died of a heart attack.

Charles grew up in Valley Acres attending schools in Taft and graduating form TUHS in 1961. He was an avid photographer since junior high and had his work published in Look Magazine. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam during the 1960's. As a child he grew up in 4-H, always having a lamb as his project. His career kept him in Taft most of his life while working for Taft Union High School. After retirement he traveled a lot, enjoying the world.

His parents, David J. Ekdahl and Betty M. Ekdahl predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Faye V. Ekdahl of Bakersfield whom he was married for 34 years. Also surviving him are his children, Tineke Ekdahl, Chuck (Pam) Ekdahl, and Amy (Sean) Villalobos of Bakersfield and his son, Jek (Lein) Ekdahl of San Francisco. He had seven grandchildren, Christopher Bamford, Christine Bamford, Johnathan Self, Trenton Ekdahl, Kristian Villalobos and Ryan and Sydney Ekdahl. He is also survived by his sister, Karen (Bob) Fields of Bakersfield; and brother, Larry (Debra) Ekdahl of Taft; many cousins, nieces, nephews and an aunt and uncle also survive Charles.

A memorial service will be Friday, May 14, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bakersfield National Cemetery, Committal Shelter, 30338 Bear Mountain Blvd., Arvin, California. Call 1-800-535-1117 for directions. Mary was born on October 17, 1919 in New Mexico to Henry and Haddon Mann and passed away at the age of 82 in Bakersfield on May 31, 2002.

Mary is survived by her son, Daniel "Boone" Elissague of Taft, her daughter Ann Marek and her husband Ed of Taft, one granddaughter Roxie Elissague of Taft, her brother Brooks Mann of Clear Lake, California and her sister Emma Killmer also of Taft. She also had many nieces and nephews.

Mary was a hostess at the White Elephant for several years. Mary was loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed. Mary passed away on May 31st in a Bakersfield hospital.

Mr. Embrey was born in Yale, Oklahoma on March 26, 1928 and passed away in the local hospital on November 15, 2002. Mr. Embrey moved to Taft in 1970. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for General Production Service for 21 years. Mr. Embrey served his country during World War II in the United States Army.

His wife, Laverne Embrey on November 4, 2002, preceded him in death. His survivors include his sister, Neva Fritz of St. Louis, Missouri; his brother, Gary Embrey of Sparta, Tennessee; his two sisters-in-laws and their husbands, Mary and Ray Hahn and Betty and Bob Paine all of Bakerfield; and by his several nieces and nephews.

Boyd Lynn Emfinger
January 3, 1941 - May 13, 2010



Boyd Emfinger was born in Bakersfield, California at Kern General Hospital on January 3, 1941 to Charlie and Opal Emfinger. He passed away in Maricopa, California.

He worked in the oilfields from 1965 to present. Boyd was 24 years old when he started working in the oilfields as an auto mechanic. Through out that time he worked for General Production and for E&B Resources in Cuyama, California. Boyd loved to work and would hardly ever complain about overtime. When he was not working, he enjoyed time with his grandchildren and was always there for his grandchildren no matter what the problem was. Boyd believed in helping out friends he also helped his friends children every time the fair came around he would buy a pig to help them out.

His father Charlie Emfinger and his mother Opal Emfinger precede Boyd in death. His survivors include his wife of 30 years Dianna Emfinger, his two daughters Dawn & Tony Mighaccio of Maricopa, California and Darlene & Jeff Boyd of Taft, California, his four grandchildren Cherise Emfinger, Makayla Kintner, Blake Boyd and Kaidence Boyd, his sister Charlene Emfinger of Arizona, Brother Charlie Edwin Emfinger, Joe Emfinger of Maricopa, Jerry Emfinger of SantaCruz. Boyd had lot of nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. Boyd had many friends are Kenny Royal Sr., John Westbrook, and Johhnie Wilke. Boyd well be greatly missed but never forgotten.

Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 21st at Westside Cemetery. We will be going back to 400 Finley Dr. after the Memorial Service.

Mrs. Helena Mary Emmons a resident of the West Side for 26 years, died Sunday in a local hospital. Mrs. Emmons was born March 27, 1894, in Vancouver, B. C.

Mrs. Emmons was active in helping her husband start his present business the E. C. Emmons Supply Company. For the past ten years, Mrs. Emmons had taken an active intrest in the women and girls at the California Institution for Women at Tehachapi. Mr. Emmons is on the board of trustees for the prison. This Christmas will be the first in ten years that the couple will have missed going to the prison with gifts for the women and girls. The American Legion Auxiliary was included in Mrs. Emmons' affiliations.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 o'clock in the Erickson and Brown Chapel. Rev. Aubrey Brey, former paster of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, will officiate . Interment will be in the West Side District Cemetery.

Mrytle was born January 7, 1917 in Ripley County, Missouri and passed away in Bakersfield, December 28, 2003.Myrtle met her husband Olen (Slim) Ennis in Missouri and were married for 55 years until his death 13 years ago. Myrtle and Olen lived and raised their two daughters on the Westside (Fellows and Taft), California. She was a very wonderful and special person to all who knew her.

She had many talents including gardening, sewing, and took special pleasure in knitting doilies and afghans for her family and friends. Children were very dear to her heart and she was loved by many who were fortunate enough to know her. Myrtle had a very special love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents J. R. and Elsie Lowery; sisters: Lois, Terry, Naida Granger, and Lillian Brown; brothers: Hubert Lowery, Harold Lowery, Curley Lowery, and Clint Lowery. Myrtle is survived by her sister Norma Kalisz and brother Robert Lowery; her two loving daughters Enestine and her husband Clifton Hill, and June and her husband Les Clark. She is also survived by her grandchildren Gary and Bruce Summers, Les and Michelle Clark III, Amber and Justin Kelton, Arianne Summers, Tessa and Billy Pilgrim, and Kerri and Harold Liles. Her great-grandchildren are Ryan and Brandi Summers; Tanisha, Ayana, Darius, and Keylan Liles; Arizona, Sierra and Willow Pilgrim and Logun Clark.

Mr. Enos was born in Bakersfield on June 16, 1968 and passed awy June 4, 1997 in Taft. He was raised and educated in Taft and had been employed as an oil worker.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John Enos and Bill and Dana King. He is survived by his son, Nicholas Anthony Enos of Oregon; his mother, Cathryn Rasey of Taft; his father, Jack Enos of Fellows; his grandmother, Irene Enos of Fellows; his sisters, Margo and Sunshine; his brother, Cory; and several aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces.

Graveside funeral services will be held in the West Side District Cemetery on Thursday morning at 11:00 am. For Taft resident, Leroy W. Erickson, 80. Rev. Rich Johnson, associate pastor at Kings Way Assembly Worship Center of Arroyo Grande, will officiate.

Mr. Erickson was born in Cambridge, Minnesota on May 5, 1922 and passed away on July 6, 2002. During the Second World War he proudly served his country as a member of the Army Air Corps. After his discharge Mr. Erickson settled in Taft. He had been employed by Taft City Schools as a bus driver for over 37 years. Mr. Erickson was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. He enjoyed his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed camping.

Mr. Erickson is survived by his wife, Norma Erickson of Taft; his children and their spouses, Martin and Sandy Erickson, Fran and Tim Young all of Las Vegas, Nevada, Shelly Floyd of Bakersfield and Lisa Erickson of Taft; his sister, Eleanor Manthie of Minneapolis, Minnesota; his nine grandchildren and his 14 great grandchildren.

The family has suggested that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Mr. Erickson's name to a favorite charity. No visitation hours are scheduled and the services are under the direction of the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.

Joe B. Esquivel was born on November 1, 1965 in Barstow, California and passed on at his home on Taft on August 12, 2008. He is survive by his wife Mirna Esquilvel, sons Chris and Jeff Esquivel, daughter Stacy Esquivel, grandchildren Anthony and Mia Esquivel and one on the way.

Joe grew up in Bakersfield as a child, and later moved to Taft, after his marriage. He worked as an oilfield worker and other numerous jobs until he got disabled and terribly ill. He enjoyed having a good time with his family and friends, listening and collecting music, watching boxing and other sports, and being funny at times.

He finally went to join the Lord Jesus in Heaven and he was waiting for that time to come after his struggle of dealing with a hard life of a terminal illness. You may not be with us physically, but spiritually you're around us, and will always be in our hearts. We've suffered a great loss, a husband, a father, grandfather and friend. We will miss him very much! The famiy would like to express their thanks to everyone for the support, prayers and thoughtfulness in this diffcult period of our lives.

Richard was born in Taft, California on October 9, 1921 to Erdie and Wilma Eubanks. He was raised in Maricopa, California where he graduated high school. He received his AA degree from Taft College before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the war he worked as a butcher and owned his own grocery store in Taft College before retiring in 1986.

Richard was preceded in death by is parents; his first wife, Elleen; brothers Erdie Jr. and Donald. He leaves behind his wife of almost 17 years, Eleanor; two sons, Richard and wife, Laney of Rosamond; Douglas and wife, Elena of Kingsburg; grandchildren, Rebecca, Stephanie, Erin, Andrew and wife, Clara, and Jeremy; great grandchildren, Kayla, Samantha, and Kylee; brother, Ted and wife, Eleanor; sister, Bettye and husband, Warren Sturla; and many nieces and nephews.

Brother Bill Evans, age 62, of Coleman, died Sunday (January 7, 2001) at Holiday Hill Nursing Home.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Community Baptist Church with Bro. Marcy Grun officiating. Burial will follow at Coleman Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Bill Evans was born February 8, 1938 in East Prairie, Missouri and was the son of Ellon Poley Evans and the late Tillman Evans. He grew up and attended school in East Prairie, Missouri. At age 17 he moved to Kentucky and then later to California where he lived until 1992 when he moved to Coleman. He returned to Bakersfield, California and lived there from 1995-1998. He moved back to Coleman in 1998. In September 1986 he married Mary Murphy Chamberlain in Taft, California.

He had pastured churches in Texas and California since 1978 and was pasturing Harmony Baptist Church at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Evans of Coleman, Texas; his mother, Ellon Evans of Bakersfield, California, two sons, William Poley Evans, Jr. (and wife Tammy) of Bakersfield, California and Douglas Evans of Taft, California; two daughters, Cheryl Fields of Taft, California and Liz Hagstrom (and husband Chuck) of Taft, California; one step-daughter, Johnne Phillips (and husband Berry) of Coleman; one brother, Albert.

Mr. Evans was born on July 23, 1915 in Wade, Oklahoma and passed away in Bakersfield on March 20, 2003. Mr. Evans moved to Taft many years ago to work in the oilfields.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alta Evans in August 2001; his son, Larry Evans and his daughter, Jewell High. His survivors include his son, Jerry Evans, Sr. of Taft; his nine grandchildren, Jerry Evans, Jr. and Shawn Evans both of Taft; Leilani Louden of Bakersfield and Virginia Streblow of Missouri; his step grandchildren, Margie Lawrence of Yucca Valley, Patricia Hernandez of Taft, Janet Pozzebon of Carpenteria, Karen Vassey and Neal Turnage both of Arizona; his many step great and great great grandchildren. Clarence will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. Graveside funeral services will be held in the West Side District Cemetery on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. for former Taft Resident, Corinne Varner Evans, 94. Rev. Herman Lippert will officiate.

Mrs. Evans was born in Green Forest, Arkansas on September 9, 1914 and passed away in Bakersfield on February 2, 2009. She was raised and educated in Taft and graduated from Taft Union High School and attended Taft College. She worked for Kern County Library and was a member of the Emblem Club. Mrs. Evans was an auxillian with Mercy Hospital for over 37 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Bessie Varner; her daughter, Julie McCarthy; her husband, Herb Evans and her four sisters. Graveside funeral services will be held in the West Side District Cemetery on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for Jesse Evans, 95. Officers of the Taft-Midway Masonic Lodge, #426 F.& A.M. will officiate at the services.

Mr. Evans was born in Clay City, Illinois on November 23, 1909 and passed away in Bakersfield on January 2, 2005. Mr. Evans was a butcher for his working life and was employed by Farmer John for many years. He had lived in Taft for 15 years before moving to Bakersfield three years ago. He was a 50 year member of the Bunker Hill Masonic Lodge #151. F. & A. M. in Illinois and also a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Bunker Hill Chapter.

Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his wife, Velva, in 1998 and his son, Richard Evans. His survivors include his daughter and her husband, Janet and Robert Taylor of Bakersfield; his seven grandchildren and their spouses, Rick and Marianne Conklin of Godhill, Oregon, Jerry and Rebecca Taylor of Medford, Oregon, Tammy Garcia of Riverside, Joann and Casey Bieghley of Salem, Oregon, Deanna and Don Whitlow of Phoenix, Arizona, Jason and Panda Taylor of Leander, Texas and Rocky and Cyndi O'Neill of Taft; his eighteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Paul Evans
September 23, 1921 - October 13, 2012



Paul Evans was born to Franklin and Emma Lucretia (Hendrix) Evans on September 23, 1921 in Wolfe City, Texas and passed away on October 13, 2012 in Bakersfield. Mr. Evans attended schools in Chillicothe, Texas. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1947 and was stationed in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Evans had been employed by Southern California Gas Company for 27 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a longtime member of the First Southern Baptist Church and served the church as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher. Among his hobbies were woodworking and entering jams and jellies in the Kern County Fair.

Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret Evans; his daughter and her husband, Carol Ann and Andrew Newkirk of Taft; his sons, Michael Paul (Mike) Evans of Chillicothe, Texas and Charles Franklin (Charlie) Evans and his wife, Jennifer of Bakersfield; his grandchildren and their spouses, Walter and Caycee Windes, Andrea and Zak Crabb, Dawna and Matt Melton, Daniel Newkirk, Justin Evans, Britany Evans, Jamie Evans, Daylen Evans, Marlana Evans and Anthony Cullip; his great grandchildren, Kimber Crabb, Hunter Melton, Walter Windes, and Kenlee Melton and Elsa Windes.

Teresa Margaret Hull Evans
April 4, 1927 - November 21, 2012



Teresa Margaret was born on April 4, 1927 to Mercy and Charles Hull of El Paso, Texas and passed away on November 21, 2012 in Bakersfield. She was raised in El Paso and was a graduate of Loretto Academy. She went to nursing school but put her career on hold when she married Mr. Paul Evans. Paul and Teresa met when Teresa's sister, Martha, married Paul's brother, Oscar.

Paul and Teresa were blessed to have celebrated 64 years of marriage on July 3, 2012. Teresa Margaret loved life and all that was in it. She gave all to the Lord, her family and the Church. She was a long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Altar Society there. She also taught Catechism for many years. Teresa Margaret never met a stranger and was a shining example to all; a real angel on earth. She did work some as an LVN after her children were grown and she enjoyed sewing, crocheting and especially loved her grandchildren. Grandma always had time for a hot fudge sundae at McDonald's.

Teresa Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Martha and beloved husband, Paul. She is survived by her children, Carol Ann Newkirk, and husband Andy in Taft, Michael Paul Evans Chilicothe, Texas and Charles Franklin Evans and wife Jennifer of Bakersfield; her grandchildren and their spouses, Walter and Caycee Windes, Andrea and Zak Crabb, Dawna and Matt Melton, Daniel Newkirk and fiancee, Stephanie Carlton, Justin Evans and fiancee, Stephanie Jackson, Brittany Evans, Jamie Evans, Daylen Evans, Marlana Evans and Anthony Cullip; her great grandchildren, Kyle Crabb, Kimber Crabb, Hunter Melton, Walter Windes, Kenlee Melton, and Elsa Windes.

Graveside funeral services will be held in the Westside District Cemetery on Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. for Taft resident, Edward Earl Everett Sr. 72.

Mr. Everett was born in Seminole, Oklahoma on September 28, 1929 and passed away in a local hospital on April 4, 2002. At age six he moved to Buttonwillow and lived there until he moved to Taft in 1954. During his younger years he worked as a farmer but spent most of his working life working in the local oilfields. At the end of his working career he was employed by the West Side Recreation and Park District. Mr. Everett enjoyed music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Willie Everett and by his two brothers, Calvin and Harvey Everett. His survivors include his wife of almost 53 years, Frances Everett of Taft; his children and their spouses Alice and Dan Watkins of Riverside, Brenda Preze of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Edward E. Everett Jr. of Wasco, Cendy and William Bell of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carl and Saundra Everett of Valley Acres and Rodney and Stacey Everett of Bakersfield; his former daughter-in-law and close friend, Debbie Parcel of Bakersfield; his 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mrs. Everett was born in Lavaca, Arkansas on July 30, 1932 and passed away in Bakersfield on December 2, 2003. She moved to Tupman as a young girl. She married Edward Everett in 1948 and they moved to Taft in 1956. She worked for Regency West II nursing home for several years. Mrs. Everett enjoyed quilting and gardening and she was known for her building and remodeling. She helped raise many of her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Everett in 2002. Her survivors include her children and their spouses, Alice and Dan Watkins of Riverside, Brenda Prez of Colorado, Edward Everett, Jr. of Taft, Cendy and William Bell of Colorado, Carl and Saundra Everett of Taft and Rodney and Stacey Everett of Bakersfield; her 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; her sisters, Asley White, Velta Shaw and Jeanette Jorgansen; her son-in-law, Jim Holmes, former daughter-in-law and close friend, Debbie Parcel; and her many nieces and nephews.

Ernest George Ewert
March 23, 1927 - March 17, 2009



Ernie was born in Clinton, Minnesota on March 23, 1927 to Emil and Paulina Ewert. He passed away peacefully in Bakersfield, California, surrounded by family on March 17, 2009.

Ernie was one of 10 children raised in the farming communities of western Minnesota. He served in the Navy during WWII, later working in the Great Northern Railroad in Montana. Ernie married his sweetheart, Freddie and move to Ojai, California in 1952 to work for Shell Chemical in Ventura. The community of Ojai was a wonderful home to raise his family until 1972 when Shell transferred him to Taft, California. The Taft community welcomed the Ewert Familly and Erinie called Taft home until he retired from Shell in 1985. Ernie spent his retirement in Bakersfield, "spoiling his grandchildren with love," and helping friends and neighbors. Ernie is remembered for his generosity, his great sense of humor, and his ability to fix anything and everything.

He is survived by his wife, Frddie; his son Randy of Wenatchee, Washington, grandchildren Rebecca and Sean Farmer and Matthew Ewert, and great-grandchildren Mallory, Nolan and Trenton Farmer; his son, David and wife Nancy, and granchildren Carolyn and Kristen Ewert.

Fannie A. Ezell
August 2, 1912 - February 2, 1997



Graveside services will be held Wednesday in Hughson for Fannie Adaline Ezel, 84. Mrs. Ezell was born August 2, 1912 in Lonoke, Arkansas to Charlie and Selma Kadle Hicks and passed away February 2, 1997 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fannie grew up in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. After her marriage to Orvie Clyde Ezell in 1929 they followed the oil and construction businesses from state to state. She lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from 1948-68; eight years in Napa; and 20 years in Modesto. She finally moved to Logandale, Nevada in 1992. A member of the Baptist Church, she was a strong Christian and enjoyed reading the Bible. She enjoyed cooking, traveling and serving others. She loved her family and was instrumental in bringing them together often for family reunions.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde, on October 27, 1994. Survivors include four sons and a daughter, Roland and Delores Ezell of Las Vegas, Norman and Kathryn Ezell of Taft, Leonard and Felicia Ezell of Pasadena, Rodney and Glena Ezell of Stockton, and Lucile and Jim Greeson of Logandale; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Lucille Hicks, of Honolulu.

Oscar L. "Easy" Ezell
November 6, 1922 - April 26, 2010



Oscar Ezell was born in November 1922 and died Monday, April 26, 2010. Easy had lived in Oceano for six years, and previously in Taft, California, for 57 years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II between 1942 - 1945. He was an instrument technician and owner of Oilfield Controls Inc., for 40 years, and attended the Baptist Church. Easy enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and spending time with family and friends. He was a very wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, employer and friend, and will always be remembered for his ready smile and great sense of humor.

Easy is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie (Herkimer) Ezell; children, Bei Easley (Ron) and Ted Ezell (Jakie) of Taft; special daughter, Josie Viramontes; sisters, Betty Farrington and Shirley Brown (Rod) of Bakersfield; brother , Billy Ezell (Janene) of San Simeon; and brother-in-law Fred Herkimer (Patty) of Oceano; grandchildren, Lorie Yetter (Del), Jennifer Banker (Ryan), Stacy Wilson (Daryl), Beth Barba, Chas Barba, Sarah Barnes Cody Ezell, Mars)hall Ezell, Rhonda Chapman (Troy), Tommy Easley (Cindy) and John Easley; and three special grandchildren Miguel, Judy and Oscar Viramontes; 15 great grand children, Scott, Julie (Mike), Eric Michael, Jayson, Kristopher, Madeline, Trever, Crystal, Mia, Zane, Christian, Isabella, Hannah and Lane; great-great granddaugher, Lily; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Theodore "Ted" Lee Ezell
September 18, 1945 - September 6, 2011



Theodore "Ted" Lee Ezell, 65, was born on September 18, 1945 to Marjorie & Oscar Ezell in San Pedro, California and passed away September 6, 2011 at his home in Oceano, California.

Ted graduated from TUHS class of 64, and went on to further his education at Taft College. After college he became a member of management for TG&Y then Safeway. In 1982, he went to work for his parents at Oilfield Controls Inc., and then later began a career as a correctional officer at CCF where he truly felt his co-workers were his second family.

Ted loved being involved in the community from acting as Sherriff at Taft's Oildorado days from 1985-2000, to being a volunteer of the citizens service unit for the Sherriff's Department. He served as president and LT governor of Taft Kiwanis, and belonged to the Desk & Derrick Club, Corvette Club, and the Optimist Club.

Ted is survived by his wife of 40 years Jackie Ezell, mother Marjorie Ezell, sister Bei Easley, daughters Lorie Yetter & husband Del, Stacy Wilson & husband Darrell, Hannah & Haley, sons, Cody & wife Natalie, Teddy, Austin, Marshall, grandchildren Scott Willis, Julie Chamberlain & husband Mike, Isabella & Parker Ezell, Madelynn Allsworth, Eric, Michael & Jayson McKnight great grandchildren Lillie Willis, nieces Jennifer Banker & husband Ryan, Beth Barba & son Lane, Sarah Burleson & husband Scott, aunt Patty Kerkimer & his loyal canine companion Oscar.
