Welcome to California
Welcome to the California Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. We are a Lineage Organization for women who are descendants of military and civilians who supported the Confederate cause during the War Between the States, also called the American Civil War. Our members are not only deeply interested in genealogy, but also interested in the historical times in which our ancestors lived.
The objectives and purposes of California Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) are:
Our organization is divided into local chapters, and California has 15 within our state. As you look through our objectives and purposes above, these are the kinds of areas in which our individual chapters do their work. Chapters donate money and do volunteer work to support our troops, maintain historical records and sites, care for the elderly, award scholarships and more. Please view our California locator map by clicking on the 'Chapter Locations' link at the left, to see if there is a chapter near you.
How do you join UDC? Click on the 'How to Join' link at the left for more information. We offer membership to women with a direct or indirect (collateral) ancestor, as well as to women who may not have a qualifying ancestor, but are interested in studying the Confederate viewpoint of this historical period.
Are you someone who thinks there are no historical connections between the Confederacy and California? Did you know the Great Seal of the State of California was designed by Robert S. Garnett while in the US Army at the Presidio? Garnett left California to join the Confederacy in his native Virginia, and was the first General Officer killed on either side - 13 July 1861. We have chapter in the northern part of the state named for him.
If you are interested in Genealogy...History...the War Between the States...joining UDC is good way to bring all of these interests together and meet new people. We hope you will visit all the pages of this website, and if you have further interest or any questions, please contact us.
Look for the Bonnie Blue Flag icon on some pages as a clickable link.
