In order to determine that you are ready to start your census transcription
please consult the following checklist:
- Have you picked county, state, ed?
- If you haven't, please visit the
State Census Index to find one that is available for
transcription.
- 1790 to 1870 we assign by Subdistricts (1 roll maximum).
- 1880 to 1920 we assign by Enumeration Districts (EDs). For more
information, please visit our page on
Enumeration District(s)
- Have you signed up?
- Go to the Sign Up page and
choose the year you wish to transcribe.
- Follow the directions and submit your choice.
- If you have a forms-challenged browser, contact the Census
Project Coordinator, Maggie Stewart at
http://www.maggie-sz.org/mailer.php.
- Have you obtained a source?
- WE DO NOT HAVE CENSUS RECORDS TO GIVE YOU.
- Visit our

include all years.]
- TEMPLATES for all years and some specialty census schedules. [These are available
by request from Maggie Stewart. Please use
"templates" as the subject of your email and include what year and type of template
that you need.]
- What to expect after the sign up has been submitted.
- You will receive a welcome letter.
- You will need to submit to us some information.
- Once this information is submitted you will receive an assignment confirmation,
be added to the Census Transcriber
Mailing List (USGWARCH-CEN-L) and further information.
- Where do I look for additional help.
- Contact your State Census Coordinator (SCC).

About Standard Format:
To standardize means to bring into conformity with a standard.
The elements of a Census Project standardized transcription from the transcribers
standpoint include:
1. Every field filled in
2. All appropriate blanks filled in (not *all* blanks are needed to be filled in.
..like a wife's occupation but.. anywhere there are ditto's.. or presumed dittos'..
the field must be filled in
3. Visit Notes for you to keep
while working on your transcription page.
