The origins of Gamaliel Robert have been difficult to discover. He is mentioned in a document of Claude Mayor, notary at Ballens, 1593, as the owner of property at St. Livres, adjoining property of Gabriel Tripod, who, in a related document, has brothers Jean and Pierre (or Perrod). There are scattered references to this family at Aubonne. There are also later references in the same area to a different Robert family from Les Verrières, Neuchâtel. Gamaliel is mentioned in several documents of H. Galliard, notary near Aubonne, 1629.
In a document relating to the marriages of his daughter Magdelaine, 30 jun 1641 (Louis Echot, notary), he is called Gamaliel Robert alias Gaddel, of Saugy-sous-Feschy. Gamaliel and Jean Robert are mentioned as communiers of Feschy (07 feb 1614, André Morzier, notary at Rolle). There are also isolated mentions of both men in records of François Morzier (1624, etc.), but we found nothing to establish the relationship between the two men.
At an earlier date, 1592, Michel Favre, notary at Rolle, mentions heirs of the late François Robert and heirs of the late Louis Robert, both at Feschy. He also mentions a document of 1549 recorded by Pierre Robert, notary. From these references, it is clear that the Robert surname has been in the area from the first half of the 16th Century. A document of Claude Mayor, notary at Ballens etc., mentions land next to François Robert 01 jan 1593, even though our François Robert had died by 1592. This citation may simply be a case of carelessness, but it is also possible that it refers to a different man.
A volume recording obligations to Pierre Sonnyer (DR 31/1 at the Archives Cantonales de Vaud) contains at least 9 IOU's written by the notary Pierre Robert in April, 1549. One of these was witnessed by "Jehan Robert frère de moy soubsigné... P Robert". The same volume has an IOU recorded by Pictet, notary, 27 apr 1530, with witnesses Henry Robert and Michel Clerc of Essertines. A similar volume, with dates ranging from 1495 to 1512, also recording debts (in Latin) to a single person, has one undated record in French at the end of the volume, naming Henry Robert as security for a sale of charcoal by Pierre Blanchet of Gimel to Légier de Paurzat. It is not certain at what date notaries in this area switched from Latin to French. The "Inventaire général des archives communales vaudoises", an on-line database maintained by the ACV, shows at least one document recorded by a notary Aymonod Robert in the archives of Rolle, 1461, and apparently the same Aymonod cited again in the 1480's. There is also at least one document recorded by a notary Aymon Robert in the same archives, 1402, and again as late as 1445..
The surviving register of Urbain Campod, notary in the area of Lavigny 1573-1578, contains isolated mentions of Discret Nicolas Robert, notary in 1570, and Egrège Jean Robert of Allamand, notary in 1569. Jean would probably be the brother of the notary Pierre Robert mentioned above. There is also a document concerning a sale of property by Louis Robert of Martheray, 1573 — presumably the same person as the late Louis Robert mentioned above (1592).
The records that finally identify the parentage of Gamaliel are marriage settlements recorded by Etienne Blondel, notary at Rolle (residing for at least most of his career at Mont-le-Grand), in which Gamaliel is mentioned as the brother of Gabrielle Robert (marriage settlement to Jaques DuTruict, 1608) and of Claudine Robert (marriage settlement to Claude Panissod, 1610), daughters of the late François Robert dit Gadel. Neither of the original marriage contracts seems to have survived; the first had been recorded by André Morzier and Benjamin Valier, the second by Jaques Maillard and Aymé Duc.

He made a reconnaissance 30 apr 1506 (ACV Fh 137, fol. 564) for property at Féchy. His sons Pierre, Colin, and Michel made a reconnaissance 30 mar 1522 (Fh 144, fol. 575), by which time their father was already dead. Michel and Pierre made another reconnaissance 22 sep 1533 (Fh 146, fol. 63), but with no mention of their brother Colin, who must have died before this date; this document gives the names of Jeannette Gaczel's father and grandfather. Apparently the same Pierre (though no parentage is given) made a reconnaissance in 1537 (ACV Fh 149), cited in 1606 (ACV Fh 171) in a reconaissance by this grandsons Pierre and Jean Robert and another by Marguerite Tardy, widow of their brother Gabriel Robert.

On 12 may 1593, Egrège Laurent du Cloz, notary of Crousaz-sous-Féchy, made a "reconnaissance" on behalf of his step-sons and wards Pierre and Jean, sons of the late Louis Robert (ACV Fh 169 fol. 222v). This document does not name the widow of Louis Robert, who presumably next married Laurent du Cloz. Possibly the name of the widow will be revealed in other reconnaissances for Laurent du Cloz.
The widow, however, is apparently Pernette Tripod, who is cited in a reconnaissance of 15 dec 1599 (Fh 168 fol. 265) as the mother of Discret Pierre and Jehan Robbert. This Pernette Tripod had purchased property from the estate of a Jean Robbert in 1588. The other son of Louis, Gabriel, was apparently already an adult in 1593, but nothing has come to our attention so far that would suggest he is the son of a different mother.

He left a bequest to his niece Andrée Berger, daughter of his sister Collette Robert, in 1517, according to the genealogy of the Bégoz family prepared by Henri de Mandrot (Recueil des généalogies vaudoises, 1912, but containing serious errors). De Mandrot calls this family Roberti, but at that period, Roberti was simply the Latin form of the name Robert, cited in the area of Féchy as early as the end of the 15th Century. Michel came from Châtel, but was known at Féchy at least as early as 1482.

It is not yet clear how he is related to the priest Michel Robert, originally from Châtel, who is noted at Féchy as early as 1482, and who died about 1517. One possibility is that he is a son of Johannes Robert of Châtel, who died after 1493, and thus the nephew of the priest.
