Will of William Barnett, Sr. doles out various sums and conditions to all the children. Of particular interest is the mention of land in Jefferson Co., PA, which he owned jointly with his son Robert Barnett, William's interest to be divided between Robert's sisters Anne and Elizabeth. The distribution to William's children seems quite unequal, but may reflect other property or funds distributed earlier, such as the money Joseph had used to buy his farm.

The information in the IGI and Ancestral File concerning this family gives various dates for the children. The dates shown here come from a consensus of census and cemetery records. A reading of the Cowan Cemetery includes a stone only partly legible that says "BARNETT... mother of William", and also a Walden Barnett, illegible. It is possible there are important clues in the cemetery. Other unidentified Barnett burials from this reading include a William 1815-1884 and a John (infant) with no dates. It is certainly possible that some or all of these transcriptions are erroneous, due to weathering of the stones.

Information from Darrell Lear notes family story that only the last 6 children were known to the relatives in Armstrong Co., in spite of the will, which mentions two additional sons William and James. This information appears first in family notes complied by Stanley Barnett, whom we consider an informed if sometimes inaccurate source. It is possible that William and James pertain to a prior marriage and/or were raised elsewhere. The will of William Sr. provides annual payments beginning four years after his death, so perhaps there are accounts of the settlement in the court dockets that would mention their place of residence. (A researcher managed to find the inventory of William's estate, but no other documents relating to the estate at the Armstrong Co. courthouse.)

Family notes attributed to Stanley Barnett b. 1898 connect the origin of the family with Philadelphia, where at the "Coffee House", William Barnett bought the rights to his acreage from a man named McCall, who had acquired it as payment for a Revolutionary War debt. Stanley Barnett thought the will of William Sr. left land in Crawford Co. to William Jr. and James. In fact, it mentions land held jointly with Robert Barnett in Jefferson Co. Only cash was left to William and James. There is no mention of Crawford Co. in the will, and we have no idea where that statement came from!

But the account from Stanley Barnett differs from the story given in the History of Armstrong County, which rehearses the titles of all the major tracts of land in the county. The property was Depreciation Lot No. 286, purchased from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by Benjamin Holland 23 sep 1786, "probably at the Coffee-House in Philadelphia". His son and only heir Samuel Holland finally obtained the patent 27 sep 1828 (patent in book H-25 p. 568 at the Pennsylvania Land Office notes that Benjamin had died intestate), and conveyed the property to William Barnett shortly thereafter, 08 nov 1828. Holland also owned Depreciation Lot No. 260 in West Franklin Tp., surveyed 20 oct 1785 and patented 14 aug 1830. The most likely synthesis is that Benjamin Holland bought up several depreciation lots at one of the public auctions in Philadelphia or Lancaster, then found buyers for these lots with the arrangement that he, the warrantee, would turn over title once the buyers had paid him the agreed principal and interest. Samuel, his heir, finally executed these arrangements. In order for these transactions to have been carried out over a period of nearly 50 years, there must have been legally binding documents of some type, contracts between Benjamin Holland and the individual buyers. The whereabouts of these contracts might be indicated in proceedings of the estate of Benjamin Holland, or noted in documents relating to transactions between Holland and the buyers of his other depreciation lots. Thus it may be possible to learn where and when William Barnett acquired his interest in his farm in Armstrong County. As the family story indicates William Barnett and Sarah Hart trekked through "the wilderness" with only their eldest daughter (or the eldest 2 daughters?) and a horse or mule about 1802, before Armstrong Co. was organized, the records could be in a number of places, including Allegheny Co., where the land was, Westmoreland, Northumberland, or Lycoming counties, which had jurisdiction over parts of present-day Armstrong Co., or perhaps in Philadelphia where the original sale is supposed to have taken place. The family has assumed that "the wilderness" was the Cumberland Gap, but at that early date, "the wilderness" could equally well describe the unsettled lands in any direction from Armstrong Co.

In hopes of finding a definite place of residence of Benjamin Holland, we checked the index to the Pennsylvania Depreciation Warrants, but found only two mentions of Benjamin Holland, in connection with two different lots. A warrant dated 22 may 1785 relates to lot 48 in District 3, surveyed by William Alexander, for Benjamin Holland "and Hannah Holland", and another dated 15 dec 1785 relates to lot 63 in District 2, surveyed by Daniel Leet, for Benjamin Holland. We have no way of knowing if this might be the same Benjamin Holland, or a different person altogether.

The first known reference to William Barnett in Armstrong Co. is his signature on a petition about 1802 (?) for Rev. John Boyd to be pastor for a congregation at Slate Lick, now in South Buffalo Tp. (History of Armstrong County, 1883, p. 450). We would like to know more about this document!

The timing of certain transactions seems to hint at family events. William Barnett's land, apparently purchased from Benjamin Holland before 1803, was not actually paid off until 1828, when Samuel Holland, son and heir of Benjamin, obtained the patent and within a few days deeded the land over to Barnett. Yet only a few years later, William had managed to amass enough money to help his sons Joseph and Robert buy land, and was able to provide for his son John and his daughters besides when he died in 1838. Did he acquire an inheritance about 1828? Was that the same year his mother came to live with him?

The estate papers at the Armstrong Co. Courthouse were examined by genealogist Jean Morrison, found to be uninformative. However, the inventory (06 nov 1838) identified debts to the estate owed by Robert Barnett ($15.00), Joseph Barnett ($17.24), and James Barnett ($17.00). The latter would most likely be one of the missing sons of William Barnett!

Our working hypothesis is that William had two sons William and James by his first wife before 1800. After her death, he remarried to Sarah Hart. The two sons were favored by their grandparents, and when William Sr. took his second family "into the wilderness" to Armstrong Co., the two sons stayed with their grandparents. By 1828, the grandfather had died, and his widow, William's mother, came to Armstrong Co. to live — implying that there may have been no other siblings who stayed on the original homestead. William's two sons by his first wife, meanwhile, had grown up and moved farther north or west, perhaps toward Lake Erie. The family has a vague story to the effect that the sons passed through Armstrong Co. on their way, and that William's second family didn't know who they were. The origin of William could well be in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, or Virginia, but all of his children who were still alive for the 1880 census reported that both of their parents were born in Pennsylvania.

Working from the premise that William and James would have been born between about 1790 and 1798, we searched the 1790 census and found a William Barnett in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland Co., PA. There were, in fact, two Williams in the area, one listed as Barnet and the other are Barnett. The elder of these left a will proved July, 1798, naming widow Mary and children Catherine, William, Agnes (wife of Nathaniel Alexander), and Robert. The elder William is not to be confused with another William "Barnet" who appears to be a son of Jacob Barndt/Barnhart/Barnet. If our William is the son of the man who left the will in 1798, we would have to revise our scenario. Perhaps the family farm remained undivided until about 1828, and after it was sold, the widow came to Armstrong Co., the proceeds were divided among the surviving heirs, and the two children of our William by his first wife left for parts unknown. Such a scenario implies the existence of deeds and possibly other records in Westmoreland Co.

William H. BARNETT       (ID #I13435)

(male)
Father: Joseph BARNETT (b. 1810, d. AFT 1884)
Mother: Margaret Ann _____ (b. 1815, d. 18 NOV 1840)

Family 1 : Esther Jane COWAN (b. 8 JAN 1841, d. 30 DEC 1928)
  1. +Lily Mary BARNETT (b. 4 JUL 1870, d. 1902)
  2. +Mark Hopkins BARNETT (b. 8 FEB 1873, d. 28 FEB 1953)

According to penion file, he was in poor health at the time of his discharge from Civil War service in 1865, probably due to malaria and dysentery. He was in "the west" about 1 year (1868), then again after his marriage. He may have lived in Scotland Co., MO or in Van Buren Co., IA, very close to the state line.

[4786]

William H. Barnett is likely a son of Joseph by his first wife, as there is a gap of 11 years before the next child, and no intervening children in the 1850 census. 1850 shows age 7, but 1860 shows age 20.

[14464]

Marriage performed by Rev. J. N. Dick, according to pension file.

Atchison C. BARNETTE       (ID #I13444)

(male)
Father: Joseph BARNETT (b. 1810, d. AFT 1884)
Mother: Mary Ann MURDOCK (b. 15 JUN 1817, d. 10 FEB 1883)

Family 1 : Jenny DIMIT (b. 1854)
  1. +Leslie J. BARNETTE (b. 1873, d. AFT 1930)
  2.  Elmer BARNETTE (b. 1877)
  3. +William D. BARNETTE (b. 1879, d. 1910)
Family 2 : Luella J. COOK (b. 1865, d. 1930)

He and his descendants seem to have spelled their name Barnette instead of Barnett in most records; however, his tombstone says Barnett.

Appears in 1870 census: Harrisburg Tp., Van Buren Co., p. 270B, as son "A. C.". His mother's obituary (1883) says she had 4 living children at that time. Unless there was another child who did not appear on any censuses, Atchison must have been one of them. So, we checked the 1880 census and found him in Fremont, Isabella Co., MI. 1900, 1910, and 1920, Jackson Co., MI. (1900, ED 1 p. 6; 1920, ED 36 p.1). Death certificate shows father Joseph Barnett.

The 1910 census, in Blackman Tp., ED 1, p. 14, notes that Atchison C. Barnett has been married 15 years and is in his second marriage to Luella J. His parents' birthplaces are given as Pennsylvania and Maryland -- this last item different from all other readings. Luella had one living child, presumably by her first marriage, but we still do not know the surname of her first husband.

The only obituary notice seems to be the one that appeared in the Springport Signal, August 4, 1927:

"A. C. Barnett, who was injured in an auto accident on the Duck Lake road last Monday, died at his home in the Griffith neighborhood Friday night. Funeral from the house Monday, burial near Charlotte. Mr. Barnett was 75 years old and is survived by his wife and one son, who lives in Chicago."

The marriage records of Jackson Co., MI contain the marriage to Luella J. Cook on 24 may 1896 by E. R. Curry, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, Jackson, MI. The entry gives Atchison's mother's maiden name as Murdock, confirming the death certificate of his sister Martha Jane.

Found in Jackson Citizen Patriot (Jackson, Michigan), 30 mar 1914: "Minor Court News. ... J. E. Gallagher, who advertises himself as the "Minnesota Boy Healer," was arraigned Saturday afternoon on a warrant charging assault and battery, the complainant being Atchison C. Barnett. Mr. Gallagher told the court that he had treated a relative of Mr. Barnett, and that the latter had called at his office and demanded the money paid for treatment should be returned, claiming his relative had not been cured. The money was then returned in exchange for a receipt, and Barnett then demanded a copy of the receipt, which was given. An altercation then followed and Mr. Gallagher snatched the receipt from Mr. Barnett, but afterwards handed it back. Mr. Barnett then stepped to the telephone with the intention of calling the police, and Mr. Gallagher caught hold of him and threw him on his back. The court refused to accept a plea of guilty, preferring to hear both sides of the case, and set Mr. Gallagher's trial for April 7. Mr. Gallagher was released on his own recognizance."

[4796]

Date from death certificate, consistent with census records 1900 and later. However, earlier records make him a year older. It is possible he forgot his actual age!

[4797]

Death certificate gives exact dates of birth and death, but names father only. Died of pneumonia following crushed chest due to automobile accident. There does not seem to be a probate file for him in Jackson Co., MI.

[4798]

According to the death certificate. However, the obituary notice in the Springport Signal, August 4, 1927, indicates burial "near Charlotte" (seat of Eaton County).

Father: Atchison C. BARNETTE (b. 05 MAR 1852, d. 29 JUL 1927)
Mother: Jenny DIMIT (b. 1854)

Family 1 : Grace B. WINFIELD (b. 12 OCT 1874, d. 1949)
  1.  Fayola BARNETTE (b. JUN 1896)
  2. +Ross Guy BARNETTE (b. 13 JAN 1898, d. 5 APR 1972)

In some official records, this family used the spelling Barnette. He was working as a cabinet maker in an automobile body factory in Pontiac, MI at the time of the 1930 census, but his family was not with him. Other records for the rest of the family suggest he must have divorced by 1909. His father's obituary places him in Chicago in 1927.

His marriage record in Jackson Co., MI gives his mother's maiden name as Dismit or Dinnit -- the writing is not clear. The name may be Dimmit—there were several families of this name in Armstrong Co., PA, although the spelling varies considerably.

From census data. However, son Ross G. Barnette reported on one of his World War I draft registration cards that his father had been born in Chicago!

William D. BARNETTE       (ID #I13458)

(male)
Father: Atchison C. BARNETTE (b. 05 MAR 1852, d. 29 JUL 1927)
Mother: Jenny DIMIT (b. 1854)

Family 1 : Mary Ellen (Mamie) MCGINNIS (b. abt 1875)
  1.  Elmer Davis BARNETTE (b. 26 MAY 1900, d. 27 AUG 1923)
  2.  Nellie BARNETTE (b. 07 AUG 1909)

Not mentioned in his father's obituary, and so probably leaving no descendants before 1927. However, there is a newpaper article in the Jackson Citizen Patriot, (Jackson, Michigan) dated 23 feb 1919, in which it is reported that Ross Barnette of Jackson has received a poem from his cousin Elmer D. Barnette, Co. F, 126th Infantry, concerning the exploits of the 32nd Regiment during its march across the Rhine during World War I. There is a photograph of this Elmer, who had enlisted in Co. M, Jackson Guards, a National Guard unit that had been merged into an active unit. In order to be Ross' cousin, this Elmer D. Barnette would have to be a son of one of Ross' uncles, either Elmer or William. The solution is very likely found in a death record in Chicago, for Elmer Davis Barnette, son of William Barnette and Mary McGinnis, born in Chicago 26 may 1900, and died there 27 aug 1923, leaving a widow Mathilda. She was born Mathilda M. Goers, they were married in Cook Co., Illinois on 28 oct 1922. (William D. Barnett married Mamie E. McGinnis 04 jul 1899 in Cook Co., Illinois. There is a gravestone in Mount Olive Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois for William D. Barnett 1880-1910 and, on the same stone, Elmer D. Barnett 1900-1923. Also, a delayed birth certificate was issued in 1926 in Chicago for Nellie, daughter of William D. Barnett and Mamie E. McGinnis, born 07 aug 1909. The delayed certificate gives William's age as 30 and says he was born in Jackson, Michigan, which seems to prove his identity.)
