He is no. 299 in the Burnand genealogy. By his second wife, he had 12 children, which the corrigenda to the Burnand genealogy assigned nos. 314 through 3177, and only giving the name of the last of these, Sydney. We found nine of these children baptised at St.James, Paddington. Another two, born before the marriage of Francis and Mary Eliza, were baptised at St.Dunstan, Stepney, children of Francis Burnand and Eliza, but we are not sure these belong here. It seems more likely there were several children born about 1852-1855 whose baptisms have not been located.

She is no. 119 in the Burnand genealogy. For a full account of the family of her husband, see our companion database at www.rootsweb.com/~chevaud/ballens/bindex.htm.
Genealogists remember her as the tireless advocat for recognition of the alleged nobility of her husband's family. While the connection of the Vullyamoz family to the noble seigneurie of Pont-en-Ogoz (Canton Fribourg) remains obscure and uncertain, her persistence did have significant results.
There are a number of sources, each giving apparently an incomplete account of the origins of the Vullyamoz family in Lausanne:
The most interesting primary source is the Lettre de Bourgeoisie of 20 mar 1553, in which she found the notation "Jean du Pont alias Vullyamoz." Whether this document is in fact identical to the official record of citizenship of that date (AVL D 442, 305 verso) is not clear from the information at hand. The parentage cited without sources by an 18th Century genealogist, and published by René Burnand, identifies the citizen of 1553 as the son of a notary Jean du Pont and his wife Clauda Chevalley, of Lavaux. Another version circulating among descendants, apparently derived from modern but faulty research, makes this Jean the son of one Etienne de Pont alias Vullyamoz who married Nanette Vullyamoz in 1448. This latter version seems to have skipped a generation at one or two places.
The most detailed account we have located is the one published by Barras, based at least in part on correspondence with Alphonse, second Baron of Pont-Wullyamoz, who in 1902 had reached the age of 82. The Baron was then "ministre plénipotentiaire et conseiller intime à la Cour d'Autriche," and he had promised to donate a complete copy of his numerous papers and parchments concerning the Pont family to the commune of Pont-en-Ogoz, wishing, he said, "to conserve a record of his ancestors in the same places where they had lived throughout the centuries." Whether this donation actually occurred has not been discovered, but it seems to add weight to the lineage quoted by Barras.
Beginning, then, with Antoine (I) de Pont of Rivaz, cited by Barras as governor of St. Saphorin in 1482, we have the first problem. The other version gives the date as 1428, and mentions another citation in 1427. Barras says this Antoine (I) was the one who married a daughter of Abraham Vullyamoz, conseiller de Lausanne. Barras, but not the other source, goes on to say that Antoine (I) had a son Antoine (II), cited in 1498 as "gouverneur de la grande communauté de St. Saphorin." Next comes Etienne, son of Antoine (II?), who specified in the marriage contract of his son Jean (I) that the latter should be known as Pont-Vullyamoz, thus adding the surname of his grandmother. Barras speculates that this might have been done in order to preserve the Vullyamoz name, which was then on the verge of extinction, or perhaps to distinguish the Pont family of Rivaz from the Pont-Verre family which had recently become infamous because of their involvement with the "Chevaliers de la Cuillère," a group of nobles who had recently tried to interfere with the ancient "libertés et franchises" of the cities of Lausanne and Geneva.
Barras nexts lists Jean (II), son of Jean (I), as the man who in 1553 purchased citizenship in Lausanne and married Georgette de l'Harpe. The other account lists this man as the son of Etienne, thus omitting the second Antoine and the first Jean.
It is now necessary to confront the problem of dates. We regard the citations of 1427 and 1428 as plausible, in that they appear to be two citations of the same period referring to the same person. We can presume that Antoine (I), plausibly the son of Girard dou Pont (II), was born no later than 1400 in order to have risen to this position. But it seems unlikely that his son Antoine (II) would still be governor in 1498, unless Antoine (II) were born rather later, perhaps 1450. It is possible that there should be another generation between Antoine (I) and Antoine (II). De Vevey also says there was another generation between Girard (II) and Jean the citizen. Barras, however, is ambiguous in his statement that Etienne was the son of Antoine. He might have meant that Etienne was the son of Antoine (I), and the other account says that Etienne married in 1448 to Nanette Vullyamoz! If that date is correct (regardless of whether the bride was a Vullyamoz), Etienne would have been born about 1420, thus likely the son of Antoine (I). If this is correct, we would suppose that Jean (I) was born about 1450-1470. Barras does not give a date for his marriage, but the other account says "about 1508", which seems quite late but feasible, and also that Jean (I) was justicier and gouverneur of St. Saphorin in 1524 and 1537, which seems far too late to be feasible. Barras also indicated that Jean (II), the one who purchased citizenship of Lausanne in 1553 (occupation cordonnier), went on to marry Georgette de l'Harpe. But we find "Egrège Jean Vullyamoz Banderet du Pont" and his wife Georgeaz de l'Harpe baptising their last child Jean Pierre 16 aug 1593, proving that Georgeaz was born no earlier than 1558. Since Jean (II) would have to be at least 25 years old to purchase citizenship, it does not seem likely that he would wait until the 1570's to marry a woman 30 years younger than himself, unless she were his second wife. It seems more likely that the man who married Georgeaz de l'Harpe would be the son of Jean (II), thus Jean (III)! The other account does in fact call the Banderet of 1595 "Jean III", but does not mention a corresponding Jean II and does not name the wife of Jean III. Santschi cites a record (ACV DG 283, 9) of 1588 proving that the original citizen Jean Vullyamoz had died, and names his sons as Jean (a notary, whom Santschi says left only one son Michel or Israel, without issue), Abraham (also a notary), and Philippe.
Another complication, apparently not confronted in any of the accounts that have come to our attention, is the existence of a notary Abraham Vullyamoz, active at Belmont, Lausanne, and Pully, 1545-1589 (ACV DG 283). He might have been a brother of Jean Vullyamoz the cordonnier who acquired citizenship in 1553, and we do not know if he left descendants.
From this analysis, it is obvious that the 16th Century generations of the Vullyamoz family are not completely understood and should be regarded as a work in progress. The best fit we have been able to achieve is as follows:
Girard II cited 1387
Antoine I governor of St. Saphorin 1428
Etienne (rejecting for the moment the claim that he married in 1448, but if much later, we would need to make him the son of Antoine II)
Jean I notary and governor of St. Saphorin as late as 1537
Jean II cordonnier purchased citizenship 1553
Jean III Banderet 1590's married Georgeaz de l'Harpe
Something like this must have been argued by La Dame en Rose in support of her claim that the Vullyamoz, noted as bearing the surname Du Pont in 1553, must belong to the ancient family of Pont-en-Ogoz, and should thus be regarded as hereditary nobility. Among other consequences, this argument eventually enabled her to place her son Alphonse at an exclusive school in Vienna, reserved for the nobility, and as a direct result, Alphonse found his way to a series of high offices at the court of Austria, eventually achieving the title of Baron of Pont-Wullyamoz.
It was on behalf of her son Alphonse that an effort was made to legitimize the compound surname in the records of Lausanne. The Manuel de Conseil for 26 aug 1794 concerns a request for a copy of the baptismal record of Alphonse:
Later, on at least three occasions, the Chambre Economique discussed the problem:
(The Municipalité had also deliberated on this subject 24 aug 1809, with the result that the word Dupont was added to the baptismal record of Jean Isaac Vullyamoz, 08 feb 1729.)
Of "La Dame en Rose" herself, we quote René Burnand (1954):
