He is mentioned in the 1670 testament of his aunt Marie Dorothée Buttet as her godson. By 01 dec 1685, he had been "for a long time" out of the country; his brothers Philippe, Pierre, and Baltazard reported to the cour de justice of Chavannes (ACV B i l 264) that they had received some letters from him, and they petitioned to secure his share of their inheritance, assisted by Abraham Frossard and by Isaac Dutoit their cousin. His brother Philippe dictated a verbal testament 10 jan 1689, reported in the same register of the cour de justice, including mention of the estate of Samuel, implying that they were not sure at that time if Samuel were still alive. Later that year, two of the brothers asked the court to distribute Samuel's estate, but the brother David did not agree, indicating he had not seen any proof of Samuel's death. Finally, the brothers reported on 09 jun 1689 that they had received a letter from Daniel Papaux of Moudon, dated 15 may 1689 at Ypres, Flanders, reporting that Samuel was indeed dead. The circumstances were not mentioned, and no further information seems to have been recorded.

The records for 1732 begin with a fat sheaf of documents conveying property of Samuel Dutoit of Moudon, now a resident at Vevey, to various buyers at a public sale. Later records of the same notary, e.g. 05 jan 1733, show this Samuel selling his share of a dîme from the estate of his late father Baltazard Dutoit, to Pierre Daniel Veyre.

Not the same as the Samuel Dutoit of Aigle, whose widow Marie daughter of the late Christ Vere (?) of Gessenay appears in 1753. Samuel's marriage is not recorded at Vevey, apparently. The baptisms of his children recorded at Vevey call him either "de Vevey" or "de Moudon, habitant à Vevey". Other than one Jaques Dutoit de Moudon who appears at a family baptism in 1729, there is no indication of possible relationships in Moudon. He must have moved to another parish by 1740, likely Blonay.

He is identified as a son of David Dutoit at the time of his marriage in 1740. He had a brother Philippe, who appears at a baptism in 1750, as well as a niece Marguerite. In 1729, he was about to depart for Holland (probably as a soldier) and left his brother "Abraham Daniel" (read Abraham David) in charge of his affairs (Philippe Burnand, notary at Moudon).
