DUTOIT: A Family from Moudon, Switzerland

Jean DUTOIT       (ID #I6553)

(male)
Father: Nycodus DUTOIT (dates unknown)

Family 1 :
  1.  Pierre DUTOIT (d. bef 1452)

A document in the archives of Moudon, dated 1450 and signed by P. Ensis, involves a sale by Jacob Dutoit with his brothers Rolet and Jean to Jacob Malle.

Due to several citations that connect the de Curia or de la Cour family with the sons of Nycodus Dutoit around 1450, with additional later citations, it seems most likely that this is the Johannes de Tecto whose son Petrus had married Agnes, daughter of Johannes de Curia. This Petrus had already died by 1452, and his widow seems to be the Agnes who next married Nicodus Escofferii (modern Escoffier).

Jean DUTOIT       (ID #I2026)

(male)
Father: Nicod DUTOIT (b. BEF 1470, d. BEF 1511)
Mother: Jeanne _____ (dates unknown)

Family 1 : _____ JORDANNAZ (dates unknown)
  1.  Jenon (Jeannette) DUTOIT (b. BEF 1540)
  2. +Rod DUTOIT (b. ABT 1540, d. 1582)
  3.  Jaques DUTOIT (dates unknown)

Earliest Jean Dutoit clearly identified in the church registers at Moudon, several of his children married before 1582, when it appears another Jean Dutoit died, and became the next "late Jean Dutoit". Both had sons named Pierre. The confusion is still being untangled!

Jean DUTOIT       (ID #I5479)

(male)
Father: Guy (Guido, Guidano Detecto) DUTOIT (b. BEF 1465, d. BEF 1528)

Family 1 : Perronette VEYRE (dates unknown)
  1. +Claude DUTOIT (d. ABT 1556)
  2. +Louis DUTOIT (d. BEF 1578)
  3. +Antheine DUTOIT (dates unknown)
  4. +Pierre DUTOIT (d. aft 1595)
  5. +Thomas DUTOIT (d. BEF 1595)
  6. +Antoine DUTOIT (dates unknown)

A number of his children can be identified easily in notarial records from before about 1560. However, the situation by the time the church registers begin at Moudon (1564) is already confusing. Nevertheless, we begin to suspect that he had at least one more son, the Jean Dutoit who was the father of Pierre Dutoit the minister. In 1585, we find both Antoine son of Louis Dutoit (son of the present Jean) and Maurice son of the late Jean Dutoit (perhaps son of the present Jean Dutoit) selling vineyards at La-Tour-de-Peilz to Louis Tappioz of Vevey (his wife was Magdalaine daughter of Eg. Claude Bize of Treytorrens). In the transaction involving Antoine Dutoit, we note that the vineyards are adjacent to those belonging to George Dutoit and his brothers (21 nov 1585). One of those brothers was Maurice, who sells vineyards in approximately the same location on 21 dec 1585. We think it very likely that the property at La-Tour-de-Peilz originally belonged to a common ancestor of Louis and Jean Dutoit, most likely their father, who should thus be the present Jean Dutoit.

No mention of his estate has been found so far. We would have to depend on transactions among his heirs to discover with certainty whether Jean father of the minister Pierre Dutoit really belongs here.

In the earliest surviving notarial records at Oron (those of Claude Blanc, 1555-1567), we find Louis "du theyct" of Vuarmarens who is the son of Jean Dutheyct. Louis's brother Claude is already deceased (1556), and has a brother Antoine who resides at Palézieux. It certainly appears that this is the same family discussed here. The father, Jean Dutheyct, seems still to be alive 17 nov 1556 and again in 1558 and 1559. The first document in this series showing that Jean the father of Louis Dutoit has died is dated 05 feb 1561 (ACV DO 2/2). These records need to be compared with other of other notaries from Moudon and Vevey to be sure that they all concern the same Dutoit family.

Jean DUTOIT       (ID #I6260)

(male)
Father: Rod DUTOIT (b. ABT 1540, d. 1582)

Appears in several notarial records at Vevey, e.g. those of Clement Butty, about 1600. Unless there are two "late Rod Dutoit's" of Chavannes-sus-Moudon at that period, this Jean should be the brother of the Abraham Dutoit of Vevey. He is also mentioned in the terriers ACV Fn 347 and 349, with his brothers Abraham, Pauloz, and Nicod, in the course of which reference is made to an "abbergement" to which he and his brother Abraham were parties, recorded by Eg. Michiel Frossard 17 oct 1592.

Jean DUTOIT       (ID #I2358)

(male)
Father: Jean DUTOIT (d. BEF 1583)
Mother: Françoise COVANOD (dates unknown)

Family 1 : Anteine GAULEY (bp. 25 APR 1574, d. BEF 1606)
  1. +Antoine DUTOIT (bp. 29 APR 1602?, d. ABT 1654)
Family 2 : Magdelaine BIZE (d. AFT 1640)
  1. +Jacob (Jaques) DUTOIT (bp. 14 DEC 1606, d. AFT 1662)
  2. +Abraham DUTOIT (bp. 29 NOV 1612?)
  3.  Sara DUTOIT (bp. 19 JAN 1617)

Noted as father of brothers Abraham and Jacob Dutoit, both cordonniers. Also noted as father of Anthoine Dutoit, pelletier, who is cited as "frère paternel" of Abraham and Jacob. Thus, Jean the pelletier seems to have been married twice. While we can find appropriate baptismal entries for Abraham, Jacob, and Anthoine, the father's occupation is not noted for Abraham and Anthoine. Evidently not the same person as Jean Dutoit, couturier.

Examination of the notarial records helps to clarify the situation:

09 mar 1634 (Baltazard Decristaz): Pierre Dutoit of Moudon acting in the name of his wife Jeanne Cavin, sells to Jean Cavin cordonnier in the name of his sisters Marie and Judith Cavin -- from this we infer that Judith was still unmarried.

04 jan 1635 (Baltazard Decristaz): Antoine son of Jean Dutoit pelletier settles with Jacob and Abraham Dutoit, also sons of said Jean.

26 mar 1635 (Baltazard Decristaz): Jean Dutoit and his son Antoine, by his late wife Anteine daughter of the late François Gauley vivant du Plan.

15 apr 1639 (Jean Decristaz): Partage between Jacob and Abraham Dutoit, brothers, sons of the late Jean Dutoit vivant "peslattier" (pelletier), with mention of Antoine Dutoit, "frère paternel", meaning that these three had the same father, Jean Dutoit the pelletier, but Antoine had a different mother.

29 dec 1640 (Benoit Giraudet): Testament of Magdelaine Bize, widow of the late Jean Dutoit pelletier. Her sons are Jacob and Abraham. An additional heir, a son by a prior marriage, appears to be Rodolph Bourcis.

26 mar 1642 (Jean Decristaz): Antoine Dutoit pelletier for Judith his wife and Marie his sister-in-law, daughters of the late Daniel Cavin of Vucherens, settlement with Jean Cavin.

Thus, it seems certain that we have found the two wives of Jean Dutoit pelletier, even though we have not located the marriage records.

Having identified Jean's first wife, we can now estimate the birthdate of Jean himself. In almost every case, the groom's age is a year or two greater than the bride's, for first marriages at this period. Therefore, we are looking for the baptism of a Jean Dutoit about 1572. The records at Moudon appear to have been carefully kept from 1566 to 1590. The entries in this first surviving register of baptisms are clear and in good order, and there are no obvious gaps. The only Jean baptised between 1566 and 1578 is Jean son of Jean Dutoit of Chavannes 15 mar 1573. The Jean Dutoit baptised in 1578, son of Guillaume, probably died young, because Guillaume baptised another son Jean in 1585. There is not another baptism for a Jean Dutoit until 1583, much too late to be Jean Dutoit the pellatier. Finally, no other records discovered so far require us to assign the 1573 baptism to anyone else. Therefore, we believe we may have found the parentage of Jean Dutoit the pellatier. Moreover, there is only one marriage that could belong to the father of Jean: Jean son of Maurice Dutoit and Françoise daughter of the late Estienne Covanod, 23 nov 1572. This would make Jean Dutoit the pellatier and his first wife Anteine Gauley second cousins.

Jean DUTOIT       (ID #I1906)

Mother: Anteine TROLLIET (dates unknown)

  1. +George DUTOIT (d. 1602)

Family 2 : Françoise COVANOD (dates unknown)
  1. +Jean DUTOIT (bp. 15 MAR 1573, d. ABT 1638)

This Jean is known mainly as the father of Pierre Dutoit the minister, and of Pierre's brothers who are mentioned in notarial records. He is not the same Jean who was already dead by 1565 and whose son Pierre married in that year. He seems still to have been alive in 1580 and 1582 when his sons George and Mauris married, but later in 1582 when Pierre married, he is listed as "late".

In addition, there is a marriage of Marie Burnand, widow of Rod Dutoit of Chavannes-sur-Moudon at Corsier in 1614. Could Rod have been another child of Jean?

Documents of François Chevalley, notary at Vevey, mention an interesting pair of transactions involving vineyards at La-Tour-de-Peilz. One parcel next to George Dutoit and his brothers was sold 21 nov 1585 by Antoine, son of the late Louis Dutoit of Chavannes, and the other, presumably the one owned by George and his brothers, was sold 21 dec 1585 by Maurice Dutoit, son of the late Jean Dutoit (and brother of George). This coincidence led us to suspect that Jean the father of Pierre the minister was another brother of Louis.

However, another line of evidence suggests another parentage. In 1572, Françoise Covanod married one of the Jean Dutoit's, son of Maurice. She could not have been the mother of Pierre the minister; that would have to be an earlier marriage. However, in 1583, she remarries to Jean Maillard. It is very tempting to think that her husband Jean Dutoit had (a) been married previously to someone else, and (b), by that earlier wife, was the father of Pierre and his siblings. In other words, the Jean Dutoit who died in 1582 may have been the Jean Dutoit we are looking for. That certainly explains the occurrence of the name Maurice in successive generations, but it does not explain why this family's vineyards adjoined those of Louis Dutoit.

Confirmation that this Jean Dutoit is the son of Maurice is found in the terrier ACV Fn 347, fol. 302, in a reconnaissance for Moyse Dutoit of Chesalles dated 13 apr 1592. He is revealed to be the son of Maurice son of Claude.

There are no children of any Jean Dutoit baptised at Moudon between 1573 and October, 1583, by which time he had already died, as his widow Françoise Covanod had already remarried in August of that year to Jean Maillard.

  1.  Pernette DUTOIT (bp. 10 MAR 1614)

We identify him with the son of Maurice Dutoit of Chavannes baptised at Moudon in 1584. The baptismal records at Vevey are fragmentary in the early 1600's, and we suspect that Jean was the father of additional children besides Pernette. However, there were probably no surviving heirs. Disputes among the heirs of his brother Sebastien Dutoit 11 apr 1616 (Jean Maquelin, notary at Vevey) show that he was already dead at that time, and the heirs appear all to be from the previous generation.

Jean DUTOIT       (ID #I1891)

(male)
Father: Baltazard DUTOIT (b. ABT 1550, d. BEF 1620)
Mother: Claudine JAQUEZ (d. AFT 1604)

  1.  Pierre DUTOIT (bp. 5 MAY 1625)
  2.  Eve DUTOIT (bp. 1 JUL 1627)

  4. +Jaques DUTOIT (d. bef 1677)
  5.  Philippe DUTOIT (bp. 18 JAN 1637)
  6. +Abraham DUTOIT (b. ABT 1640)
  7.  Jean Baptiste DUTOIT (bp. 24 DEC 1643)

Living at Le Plan, 1625. This may indicate that the later Antoine Dutoit living at Le Plan in the 1650's is his son or close relative. The settlement at Le Plan today consists of only a few buildings, and it has probably never been much larger. It is likely that he had several more children whose baptisms are not clearly identified.

Not Jean Dutoit the conseiller who married Marie Fudri, because that man survived at least until 1677. He is also the Jean Dutoit who, with his brother Philippe, made a settlement with Claudine Mauron, widow of their brother Daniel, 07 may 1642 (Benoit Giraudet, notary at Moudon).

The realization that he lived at Le Plan helps make sense of another set of records, although not without realizing that we are missing some baptisms. The present Jean Dutoit is known mainly from transactions among his children regarding their inheritance. However, not all of the children that seem to be his are mentioned in the later records.

Records concerning the children of Jean follow:

Father: Claude DUTOIT (b. bef 1518, d. BEF 1559)

His existence is inferred from several mentions in the 1590's of "Jean son of Claude Dutoit". A Jean son of the late Claude Dutoit in the terrier ACV Fn 347, fol. 91, who had inherited property previously in the hands of Claude and Nicod Dutoit from their wives Anthoine and Françoise Veyre, might be this one.

Father: Moyse DUTOIT (b. BEF 1566, d. AFT 1625)
Mother: Sara BECHOLEY (dates unknown)

  3. +Jean DUTOIT (b. ABT 1620, d. BEF 1685)
  4. +Daniel DUTOIT (b. ABT 1625, d. BEF 1688)

Named in testament of the minister Pierre Dutoit 29 nov 1639, B. Girardet, notary, as the son of the minister's brother Moyse.

So far, virtually all of the Dutoits in the parish records at Lucens appear to be descendants of this family, in spite of the presence in the records of Moudon of many other Dutoits with many of the same related names such as Chevaley, Frossard, Pichonnet, de Palézieux dit Falconnier, etc. The Lucens records start in 1639 (with a very few marriages from about 1630 preserved at Granges), and the Dutoits who first appear in the Lucens records do not seem to be recorded at Moudon.

However, one common link is the presence of a Jean Dutoit and wife Benoicte. It appears that Jean Dutoit of Chesalles married first Jeanne Maquelin, then, before 1640, Benoicte, who survived him. It is not known which children belong to which mother, due to the absence of early records.

Several records of Benoit Giraudet, notary at Moudon, mention that Jean had a brother Pierre (e.g., 27 jun 1654, after the death of Jean).

Now, there is a certain level of confusion about Jean Dutoit "couturier". The baptism in 1617 of Jaquemaz daughter of Jean Dutoit couturier tells us that this Jean was an adult as of that date. (This baptism leads us to the conclusion that there must have been an earlier wife as well. Likewise, there is a mention in 1621 of Benoicte, daughter of Jean Dutoit couturier, implying that he must have been married as early as 1605. He would thus have to be the first child of Moyse Dutoit and Sara Becholley, if those are indeed his parents, thus a good reason why he would be named as an heir in the testament of his uncle Pierre in 1639.) But much later, in 1645, there is mention of Jean Dutoit, couturier, son of Jaques Dutoit, and the Jaques in question is definitely the couturier who lived in Vevey from about 1603. In all probability, we are dealing with two Jean Dutoits who shared the same trade. The elder Jean might have been the uncle of the younger Jean. It is therefore possible that the appearance of two marriages for the elder Jean is the result of confusion, and that the man who married Benoicte was the younger of the two.

Another dimension of the confusion is that Jean Dutoit couturier is referred to as "of Chavannes" in 1617, but his later children, if we have correctly identified him, seem to be associated with Chesalles.

There is a notation in the baptismal registers of Moudon, 23 aug 1629, that one of the sponsors was "Benoiste fille de feu M. Jean DuToict". Taking this at face value, which is perhaps not warranted, we have to conclude that the first Jean Dutoit couturier died about 1629, and that a later Jean married Benoicte (surname still unknown). However, we know that Jean son of Moyse actually survived until at least 1639, as he is named in his uncle Pierre's testament! The only possible conclusion appears to be that Jean the earlier couturier, and father of Benoicte, was not the same man as Jean son of Moyse, whose occupation is still unknown! However, in light of the fact that his uncle Pierre Dutoit the minister gave him special mention, it seems likely that he is the Johannes De Tecto, Meldunensis, who was enrolled at the Académie de Lausanne in July, 1610. If so, he was probably about 14 years old at the time, and his baptism should have been recorded about 1596.

The identity of the earlier Jean Dutoit couturier is finally settled by a document of Antoine Richard, notary at Moudon, 09 apr 1610 (ACV DL 80), in which Jean Dutoit son of the late Claude, couturier, with his wife Claudine Sauvageat, sells property to Jaques Dutoit son of the late Guillaume, tisserand, and witnessed by Elie Dutoit, known also to be a son of the late Claude.

While it is clear that the sons of Moyse Dutoit are associated with Chesalles-sur-Moudon, there is also a "lettre de bourgeoisie" dated 20 oct 1560 for Claude Dutoit of Chavannes at Chesalles (Archives de Chesalles-sur-Moudon, P 7). It is not yet clear who he was, nor whether any of his descendants retained their connection with Chesalles.

Father: Antoine DUTOIT (b. BEF 1554)
Mother: Elizabeth (Ysabel) PORCHET (dates unknown)

  1.  Jean DUTOIT (bp. 27 JUN 1624)
  2.  Benoicte DUTOIT (bp. 27 JUN 1624)
  3.  Pierre DUTOIT (bp. 20 SEP 1626)

The Jean Dutoit who was at Bressonaz in the 1620's was a weaver ("tisserand") and son of Antoine. The only plausible baptism seems to be the one in 1597, son of Antoine Dutoit tisserand of Moudon, of whom almost nothing is known. Baptisms for three of Jean's children can be identified, and he is mentioned 28 sep 1629, still at Bressonaz (Balthazard DeCristaz, notary at Moudon). There are several more baptisms of sons of Jean Dutoit around this time, but without additional identifying information, they cannot be attributed to the present Jean Dutoit.

Appears as an adult in records from the district of Oron as early as 1574. Until his death is noted about 1612 (records of an unknown notary identified as ACV DO 42/3, 01 apr 1612), he seems always to be referred to as "Jean Dutoit de Palézieux". By that time, his father was apparently already dead, but Jean had a brother Antoine "de Palézieux".

Father: Jaques DUTOIT (d. AFT 1648)
Mother: Salomé OLEVEY (d. ABT 1625)

Baptism not yet identified, probably baptised at Moudon rather than Vevey, where all existing baptismal records have been assigned. Adult, apparently, by 1645, when he and his brother Pierre acknowledge a debt to Jaques Tacheron, minister at Syens (Faucherres, notary, ACV DL 40/7). He is identified as a couturier at that time, like his father.

Jean DUTOIT       (ID #I3853)

(male)
Father: Pierre DUTOIT (b. BEF 1570)
Mother: Salomé RUBATTEL (d. BEF 1629)

Family 1 : Paule DECONCHES (d. AFT 1704)
  1. +Gaspard DUTOIT (b. 1659, d. 1708)
  2. +Antoinette DUTOIT (b. BEF 1670)

Biographical details from La France Protestant (2d. Ed.) and Livre du Recteur de l'Académie de Genève show that he served as minister at Le Cheylard and Vallon, Ardèche, France, then in the Pays de Vaud at L'Isle 1673-1681 and Rolle 1682-1691, where he died. His final tenure in France (Le Cheylard, 1669-1670) was terminated because he was a foreigner, and he is identified as bourgeois of both Moudon and Vevey. He was enrolled at the Académie de Lausanne as early as 1636. See also Arnaud's Histoire des Protestants du Vivarais et du Velay (1888). The existence of a debt for which he and his wife were creditors dated 01 jan 1692 is signaled in a document of Philippe Favre, notary at Moudon 08 jul 1704, proving that he did not die in 1691 as indicated above, but likely soon after.

It seems most likely that he should have been the son of Pierre Dutoit and Salomé Rubattel baptised in 1618, but we first thought that Jean Dutoit was the one who married Annelle Demierre. It may be that we can eventually prove that the Jean Dutoit who married Annelle Demierre was not the son of Pierre. For the moment, we note that Salomé was herself the daughter of a minister, and she had at least two brothers who were notaries. Her son François Dutoit was a notary, and his son Pierre, also a notary, recognized the close (but unspecified) relationship to Jean Dutoit the minister. Pierre's daughter Jeanne Marie married Jean Mathieu, grandson of Jean Dutoit the minister. If our analysis is correct, the Jean Mathieu and Jeanne Marie were second cousins, a permissible degree of consanguinity under the strict rules of the Bernese authorities. One difficulty, however, is that the other person stated to be a relative of Gaspard, the relationship given in the same document of 27 jul 1719 recorded by Pierre Dutoit, was Jean Benoit Dutoit the elder (b. 1657), who appears to be a fourth cousin of Pierre (these two men were giving their consent for Gaspard's widow to sell his estate in France). If such remote relationships were recognized at that time in Vevey, the argument for the parentage of the minister Jean Dutoit rests mainly on the social class and professional relationships of his supposed parents. It is also possible that Pierre felt the need to assist Gaspard's widow, and, in order to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, called in the first available Dutoit in Vevey to provide legitimacy to the required document. Pierre had already recorded Jean Benoit's testament in 1708, so the two men knew each other.

The circumstances under which he had to leave his ministry in France have been repeated in several published accounts, but the original document has not previously been identified. The records of the reformed synods in "Série TT" of the French National Archives are available on microfilm through the Family History Library. TT 232 (FHL microfilm #1344541) contains records of a synod held in December, 1670 at Annonay. Dutoit was not present, being "indisposed", but he and the minister Detournes were the subject of an order to leave France: (19 dec 1670) "Detournes et Dutoict — Mr. le commissaire a reprézenté a la compagnie qu'il lui a esté remise par M. de Bezons, Intentant, une lettre de cachet du 15 novembre dernier adressée a mondit seigneur de Bezons par lequelle il est ordonné qu'incontinent apres laditte lettre receue, il aye a empecher lesdits sieurs Detournes et Dutoict, ministres de la province, de contignuer le service de leur ministere dans les Esglises de Vivaretz dont ils sont ministres, attendu qu'ils sont estrangers..." A message containing this news was dispatched to Dutoit, and his reply was recorded by the synod 24 dec 1670. He stated that he was prepared to obey the order, even though he had a brevet of 11 jul 1667 permitting him to exercise his ministry in spite of the fact that he was a foreigner. The synod provided him with a letter of recommendation. Very soon after this synod, a royal order dissolved the consistory of Annonay and appointed a new one.

Jean DUTOIT       (ID #I3106)

(male)
Father: Jean DUTOIT (d. bef 1649)
Mother: Claudine SAUVAGEAT (d. BEF 1634)

Family 1 : Anteine CORTESY (dates unknown)
  1.  Jeanne DUTOIT (bp. 24 FEB 1641)
  2.  Jean DUTOIT (bp. 27 SEP 1643)
  3.  Gaspard DUTOIT (bp. MAY 1645)

The baptism of 15 apr 1620 is probably his, since there does not seem to have been another Jean Dutoit of Chavannes baptising children at this time. The identification of his father Jean Dutoit as the couturier is based on the baptism of his previous child, Jaquemaz, where he is listed as couturier of Chavannes.
