  1. +Jonathan URAN (b. 1761, d. 25 APR 1841)
  2.  (infant) URAN (b. SEP 1765, d. 16 JAN 1766)

First adult reference is his marriage recorded in Newbury, MA, where he is listed as a resident of Rumford, MA. C. C. Whittier explains that John resided in Rowley, MA, but attended church in Byfield, where his children were baptized. These are the records included in the Newbury Vital Records. Sometime between 1757 and 1763, the family moved to Boscawen, NH (warned out 05 feb 1763), explaining why chidren could have been missed in official records. They are back in Rowley by the end of 1765.

Father: George URAN (b. 13 OCT 1795, d. 7 APR 1877)
Mother: Weltha PEMBER (b. 11 SEP 1799, d. 7 JUN 1886)

Family 1 : Sarah CAUCKINS (b. 26 DEC 1844)
  1.  George Pember URAN (dates unknown)
  2.  Weltha Mabel URAN (dates unknown)
  3.  J. Corning URAN (dates unknown)

This family is in 1880 census York Co., NE, Township 9, ED 131, p. 8, l. 5. The listing includes wife Sarah, stepsons George and William Crittet, and twin sons age 2 listed as Frank and Francis! Possibly this is simply a scribal error and there was only one Francis. Also possible that Frank was John's son by a previous wife.

The first reference to Jonathan Uran that is known is his appearance on muster rolls in the French and Indian War. Chase's History of Haverhill, MA (1861) cites "Jona Urine" on a muster roll for Lt. Col. James Frye's Co. (Boston) dated 17 feb 1757, and "Jonathan Urien" on the roll of Capt. Edmund Mooer's Co. in Col. Bagley's regt. "for the Reduction of Canada" (Pvt., entered May 2, 1759, discharged Nov. 20, 1759). In both cases, he is listed as a resident of Haverhill, MA. However, the vital records of Haverhill contain no mention, nor do any of the tax lists cited in Chase's History of Haverhill.

Served at various times from 13jul1756 to 20nov1758 as private from Haverhill, MA. DAR Lineage books (66:105, 64:227, 43:213) indicate he served from Putney, VT during campaign against Gen. Burgoyne in 1777.

Nevertheless, there is no pension application or other direct evidence for this service that has surfaced so far. The source of the names of his children, listed in DAR records, is not known, and no baptismal records for them have been located. However, it appears 5 or 6 of those listed were living in Putney, VT in the 1780's and in Pawlet, VT around 1800.

The pension application of his son James Uran of Pawlet and Dorset, VT says James was born in Swanzey, NH in 1761, and that he lived his parents there until March, 1776, when the family moved to Putney, VT. Putney records suggest James may have been off by a year on the latter date. (James says his birth is recorded in the town records of Swanzey, but these records in their present state do not contain any mention of the Uran family.)

Benjamin Read's History of Swanzey, NH (1892) details the settlement of the town. A first attempt was in 1734, the town then being under the control of Massachusetts. Troubles with the Indians began very soon, and the few settlers who remained by 1747 buried their belongings and evacuated back to their old homes in Massachusetts. A new charter was issued in 1753, this time by New Hampshire, and the settlers returned. Indian troubles continued, however, until at least 1755, possibly later. The names of the settlers are listed for the first settlement, new additions to 1762, 1777, and 1793, with no Uran families mentioned. Swanzey did not send a copy of the Association Test to the capitol, so we do not have a good census for 1777.

However, the History includes one quote from the minutes of town meetings. The minutes in fact prove to have several references, at least as early as 1764. The Swanzey town meeting minutes available on microfilm are old copies. On page 295, a vote is taken 04 mar 1766 to accept a road laid out "Some Time in the Month of October or November the year 1764", described as follows: "A Road layd out from Mr. Jonathan Urin's House to James Grimes' Land Running Southerly from sd Urins Hous through Cap. Hammonds fifty Acres to said Grimes' Land, said Road to continue where it is now Cleared on the west side of the the Marked Treas, said Road laid out three Rods wide."

Another road accepted 21 jun 1768 "Begins at the End of the House Lot No 12 at a Stake on the South side and Runs on the Line between Mr Car and Mr Frary taking half out of each and then turns Southerly into Mr Frary's and into Mr. Carpenter and so up to Urins Corner, the Road is of the North side of the Marks and three Rods wide." On 17 apr 1770, it was voted to extend the road in the first description down the hill on the south side of Mt. Cesar and into the Town Street to the north side of William Wright's house. On 05 mar 1776, Jonathan Uran was among the Surveyors of High Ways appointed by the town meeting. The History (p. 187) quotes the minutes of a town meeting, March 7, 1775, on the establishment of school districts. "One district at the upper or north end of the town, including all on the north or north west side of Ashuelot River as far down as to take Capt. Whitcomb's farm, and also on the other side of said river including Lieut. Joseph Whitcomb, John Frary, John Follett, Jr., Jonathan Uran, Greenwood Carpenter, Wyat Gunn and Abner Graves; and up the town street so far as to take David Belding, and down the street so far as to take Deacon Hammond." The location appears to be near the village of West Swanzey, on the east side of the river. In a deed dated February 12, 1777, but not recorded until 1795, Jonathan Uran, husbandman, sold Fourth Division Lot No. 5 to Elijah Belding of Swanzey for 133 pounds 6 shillings 8 pence lawful money of New Hampshire. No other Uran family deeds have been found in Swanzey, and the extant deed (Cheshire Co. Deeds, vol. 24 pp. 397-398) does not indicate when or how the land was acquired. However, Read's History dates the fourth division to 1737, so the original owner would be one of the first proprietors. The lot would be a little south of the road between Swanzey Centre and West Swanzey.

Jonathan first appears in Putney, VT in a deed dated January 3, 1777, where he is listed as a resident of Swanzey, NH, purchasing 50 acres in Putney from Gen. John Kathan of Fulham, Cumberland Co., NY (Fullam or Fulham was the old, official name of Dummerston). The land was on lots 23 and 24, range 5, almost adjacent to the land of Jacob Lowell. Jonathan's wife Abigail was received from the Congregational Church of Swanzey, NH in the same year. There are no Uran births or deaths recorded in Putney town records, but there are marriages. In 1792, Jonathan and Abigill Uran sell the land to John Campbell. Later the same year, Jonathan Uran, yeoman, purchases the SAME plot of land, apparently, from John Campbell of Putney, on the same day (July 20) sells the land to Timothy Underwood of Shrewsbury, MA for a profit of 20 pounds. At this point, this would still have to be Jonathan Sr., since Jonathan Jr. would only be 17 years old. The last reference I have found is a List of Freemen, Putney Deeds vol. 1, p. 462, showing Jonathan Uran, and dated in the margin several pages later as September 6, 1796. However, this reference could conceivably refer to Jonathan Jr., who would be almost 22 years old. In the same year, Josiah Lowell of Putney (husband of Jonathan's daughter Susannah) sold lots 23 and 26 (January 1, 1796) and purchased land in Pawlet, suggesting that the whole family was then on the move.

The Uran deeds describe a rough parallelogram of land whose southerly border runs along the border with Dummerston (Fullam) at an angle 10 degrees north of west. This is at variance with the 1794 survey, which has the town border running exactly east-west. There may have been local errors in the survey. The location is identified exactly by reference to neighboring properties, including lot 22 to the north, occupied by Isaac Beard and later by Abner Miles. The Uran farm was on level ground, running as far west as a brook and a high bank. The area to the west of this bank was sold a few years later to William Sergeant of Framington, VT (June 30, 1781, Putney Deeds vol. 1, pp. 141-142).

The Lowell family cemetery, on the Jacob Lowell property, is less than a mile away, and the Kathan Cemetery is very close. The Putney-Dummerston line defines jurisdiction of the probate courts; records for families in this neighborhood could end up either in Marlboro or Westminster probate districts.

According to the pension application of James Uran, Jonathan Uran was drafted for service with the Vermont Militia about 01 may 1779. James served in his place for at least 6 weeks at Pittsford, VT, then his father hired Caleb Holton of Putney to serve the rest of his 4 1/2 month obligation, working on the farm to pay Holton's wages. However, just before the 4 1/2 months were to expire, Holton was killed by the Indians early in 1780.

Direct proof that Jonathan is the son of Richard Uran has not been found. The apparent reservations of C. C. Whittier in The Urann Family of New England ("The identity of this Jonathan is not fully established...") may, however, reflect confusion with another Jonathan Uran who lived in Boscawen, NH, here interpreted as the son of the present Jonathan's brother, John Uran. If the present Jonathan's birth date has been correctly reported (the source of the date is not known), he does not seem to fit into any of the other Uran families known to be close to Haverhill, MA. In addition, if he belongs in the lineage of John Uran and Abigail Westbrook, he could only descend from a child who had not died by 1771, when the family deed finally settled the estate of John Uran. Richard is the only one known still to be alive at that date.

[55]

Pawlet VT census 1800 shows Abigail on her own. Putney land records show Jonathan in vol. 1 p. 140 (1777), vol. 2 pp. 243, 272, 273 (1792).

[13972]

Date is listed in several sources, but original source is unknown. DAR application #620473 says marriage occurred in Haverhill, NH, though no evidence has been found for any Uran in that area. IGI has Ipswich, MA.

Jonathan URAN       (ID #I31230)

(male)
Family 1 : Abigail HODGKINS (b. 21 SEP 1736, d. 26 FEB 1842)

The first reference to Jonathan Uran that is known is his appearance on muster rolls in the French and Indian War. Chase's History of Haverhill, MA (1861) cites "Jona Urine" on a muster roll for Lt. Col. James Frye's Co. (Boston) dated 17feb1757, and "Jonathan Urien" on the roll of Capt.

DAR Lineage Book references say he was in the campaign against Gen. Burgoyne in 1777, but there is no pension application or other direct evidence for this that has surfaced so far. The source of the names of his children, listed in DAR records, is not known, and no baptismal records for them have been located. Nevertheless, it appears 5 or 6 of those listed were living in Putney, VT in the 1780's and in Pawlet, VT around 1800.

On page 295, a vote is taken 04 mar 1766 to accept a road laid out "Some Time in the Month of October of Rovember the year 1764", described as follows: "A Road layd out from Mr. Jonathan Urin's House to James Grimes' Land Running Southerly from sd Urins Hours through Cap.

The last reference I have found is a List of Freeman, Putney Deeds vol. 1, p. 462, showing Jonathan Uran, and dated in the margin several pages later as September 6, 1796.

Jonathan is tentatively placed here because of his association with Concord, NH, and because there appear to be about 2 children missing from this family. There are 3 other possible parentages: George Uran (~1737-~1801) of Greenland and Epsom, NH, Edward (d. 1676 of Boston), whose descendants have not been located, and Peter of Gloucester, MA and Salem, NH, of whom at least 2 sons Francis b. 1725 and William b. 1727 are not accounted for. Less likely still are John and James Uran of Sullivan and Sanford, ME, respectively.

Pension file W22475, application dated 16apr1818 at Concord, NH, widow applied 05apr1843 at Concord, and 2 daughters made affidavit there in 1851. BLW # 3541-100-26 Jan 1796 may refer to same service (Pvt., NH Line).

Land records in Pawlet: Buys 1 acre 67 rods lot from Abner Loomis, 31dec1802, both of Pawlet. Conveys "all my right title and interest" to Abigail Uran 11feb1805, witness James Uran and Gideon Adams (latter is town clerk). This seems to be the same plot Abigail Uran sells to Festus Adams 08nov1808, which he in turn sells to Jesse Adams 05oct1811. As this lot is too small to be a farm, it is more likely to have been a residence or business. Present in

1835 census of Hebron, NY (4 males, 3 females, 70 acres).

The 1810 census of Pawlet, VT records production of 40 yards of linen cloth that year, 1 loom, 2 spinning wheels, and 16 sheep, in addition to 2 sons.
