Jean Barclay was born, 20 June 1851, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.1 She was the daughter of Peter Barclay and Ann Cheyne.

Jean was baptized in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, 7 July 1852, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 376, "July 7th (1852) Peter Barclay (1348), Labourer, in Peterhead, and Ann Cheyne (3867), his wife, had a daughter, born 20th June 1851 baptized & named Jean (1354), before James Duncan and Colin Mackay.”.1
