James Cheyne was born, about 1796, in Ellon Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.1,2,3 He was the son of John Cheyne and Anne Cumming.

James Cheyne in Foveran (3270) and James Cheyne (1772) probably were the same person.

James Cheyne married Margaret Scott 14 May 1831, in Belhelvie Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Marriages, Parish of Belhelvie, 1820-1854, Frame 79. “Belhelvie, 14th May 1831. Said day James Cheyne in this parish and Margaret Scott in the parish of Foveran signified their purpose of Marriage and after publication of Banns were married”. The couple was also married in the Parish of Foveran, 15 May 1831.4,5

Also in the household were Margaret Cheyne, Janet Cheyne, Mary Cheyne, Alexander Cheyne and William Cheyne. He was 40 years of age and born in Aberdeenshire.6

James Cheyne and his wife Margaret Cheyne were listed on the 1851 British Census, at Frogmore, in Foveran Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a day labourer. Also present were his children, William Cheyne, Margaret Cheyne, Charles Cheyne, George Cheyne and Jean Cheyne. He was 55 years of age and born in Ellon Parish.7

James Cheyne was listed as a crofter on the marriage record of his daughter Mary Cheyne and John Ruxton, on 14 May 1859; Established Church of Scotland.8

James Cheyne, crofter, recorded the death of his wife, Margaret Cheyne, on 11 July 1862, at Frogmore, Foveran Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; at 2 PM, of fever for 20 days.10,11

James Cheyne was listed on the 1871 British Census, at Frogmore, in Foveran Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a farmer of 5 acres. Also present was his child, Margaret Cheyne. He was a widower, 75 years of age and born in Ellon Parish.14

James Cheyne died 17 January 1874 at 8:30 PM, of cancer of the hand for 17 or 18 months, at Frogmore in Foveran Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The death record listed him as James Cheyne, crofter, widower of Margaret Scott, 78 years of age. His daughter Margaret Cheyne (2015) recorded the death. His parents were listed as James Cheyne, farm servant, and Ann MS Cumming, both deceased.15
