Circa 1500. Margaret Cheyne (18646) was not mentioned in A. Y. Cheyne, The Cheyne Family in Scotland or Godsman, History of Ellon. However, in Diane Baptie, A Lairdship Lost - The Mowats of Balquholly, 1309 -1736, she was said to have been the daughter of Patrick Cheyne of Esslemont and Isobel Bade, the source being given as National Register of Archives Surveys - 0925, no. 273 and Register of the Great Seal iii.,3072. In Zetland Family Histories, she was given as Margaret Cheyne, with no parentage mentioned.1,2 Margaret Cheyne was the daughter of Sir Patrick Cheyne 6th of Essilmont and Isobel Bade.
Margaret Cheyne married Patrick Mowat of Balquholly.1
Patrick and Margaret were mentioned in Zetland Family Histories. Their entry reads "Patrick Mowat of Balquholly was a witness to a charter by George Meldrum of Fyvie to Alexander Ogilvie of Kilbirny, on 6th July, 1532. He and Margaret Cheyne, his wife were confirmed in the lands of Darrauch, in the barony of Balquholly in Aberdeenshire, on 21st February, 1545. In 1548, he entered into a contract with Malcolm Halcro of that Ilk, for the marriage of their son and daughter".1
