Henry Cheyne 5th of Essilmont and Arnage was born, about 1484.1 He was the son of Sir John Cheyne 4th of Essilmont and Arnage and Elizabeth Annand.
Henry Cheyne 5th of Essilmont and Arnage was documented in A. Y. Cheyne, The Cheyne Family in Scotland, on pages 66 and 73-74.2
Henry succeeded his father, Sir John Chene as a mere youth and was biographied in Godsman, Hitory of the Burgh and Parish of Ellon. His entry reads in part “Henry Chene was made the medium for a reconciliation between the Hays and the Chenes. This took the form of a pact between his father, John Chene, and William Hay of Delgattie whose father was William Hay of Ardendrat. The Indentures were "maid at Edinburght, the 9th June, 1494." In which Henry Chene was betrothed to Marjory, daughter of Gilbert Hay of Delgattie, whom he was to marry at the age of thirteen. It appears that Henry was far from robust, as it is stipulated in the event of his death, that his brother Patrick was to take his place upon attaining the same age. Marjory's dowry was 320 merks. In 1497, Henry reached the age of thirteen, when he was "put into the fee of the lands of Essilmont and Arnage." He was the last to hold the estates jointly. Henry married Marjory, but on February 27th, 1507, an inquest was held on the estate of the deceased Henry Chene of Esslemont, when a judgment was given to Marjory Hay, his widow, of the third part of the lands of Esslemont and Little Arnage, excepting the lands of Fortrie of Esslemont”.3
John Cheine of Esselmond and his son Henry Chene were made burgesses of Aberdeen during 1500/1501. Council Register VII, 1076.4
Henry Cheyne 5th of Essilmont and Arnage married Marjory Hay. No issue of the marriage was recorded.5,3
Henry Cheyne 5th of Essilmont and Arnage died before 27 February 1507. A judgement was given to his widow on that date. After his death the estate was succeeded by his brother Sir Patrick in the lands of Essilmont, and by his brother Alexander in the lands of Arnage.5
