John Cheyne was born, 1 February 1655.1 He was the son of George Cheyne and Catherine Inglis.

John Cheyne was documented in A. Y. Cheyne, The Cheyne Family in Scotland, on pages 142-143 and copy of a portrait on page 142A.2

John Cheyne married Marjorie Heathe. The A. Y. Cheyne book, page 142, states that John married Marjorie Heathe and later to Beatrix Tennant before 1694. He did not mention two daughters born to John and Marjorie. The birth entries had the mother's surname as Hattlie, Haitlie and Heatly.1

16 July 1684. John and his father, George, were on a list of Burgesses and Guild Brethren of the City of Edinburgh. The abstracted entry reads: "Cheyne (Chin), Johne, B. and G., chirurgiane, be r. of umq. fr. George C., lait clerk of Leith, gratis, by act of C. of dait 16 Jul 1684".3

John Cheyne married Bettie Tennant after 1695.4

Circa 1700. William Cheyne was named a son of the John Cheyne, chirurgen (surgeon)) on an abstracted entry of his admittance into the society of Burgesses. He was not mentioned in W. D. Cheyne-McPherson, The Cheynes of Inverugie.5

John Cheyne was a mentioned in an entry on te Kirk Session of South Leith Irregular Marriages. The abstracted entry read: "39. John Young, cooper in Leith, and Janet Ingles, by Mr Samuel Mowat, at Musselburgh, 01 Jul 1701. Witnesses, James Pentland and William Tait, coopers in Leith. 'But she declared she was maried in Leith in John Cheene house and was maried 06 Sep 1700".6

John was the patron of an apprentice on a list of Edinburgh Apprentices, 1701-1755. The abstracted entry reads: "Maull, Patrick, s. to umq. John M., chamberlane to Earl of Panmuir, p. to John Cheen, chir.-apoth. (B.) 12 Jan 1704".7

John Cheyne was served heir to his sister Janet Cheyne. The entry in Services of Heirs in Scotland, reads: "Cheyne, John -- Surgeon in Leith, to his sister Janet Cheyne Wid. of A. Bonar M. D. in Edin -- Heir of Conqt Genl -- 1st j
Jan 1712." It was recorded 3 Jan 1712, the fourth entry of the month.8

John Cheyne, surgeon, was secondarily named on a record of his son, William Cheyne, on 24 November 1731 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. William Cheyne, printer, was admitted as a Burgess and Guild Brother of the City of Edinburgh. The abstracted entry in the Roll of Burgesses, 1701-1760, reads: "Cheyne (Sheyne), Wm., printer, B., be r. of fr. John C., chirurgen, B., 24 Nov 1731".5

John Cheyne was secondarily named on a record of Robert Cheyne on 7 July 1762 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Robert Cheyne was made a Burgess and Guild Brother of the City of Edinburgh. His abstracted entry in the Roll of Burgesses reads: "Cheyne, Robert, mt. in Cupar, Fife, B. and G., by r. of fr. John C., surgeon, B. and G. 07 Jul 1762".9
