Ninian Richard Cheyne was born, about 1762. Ninian Richard Cheyne was named a son of the Rev'd Mr. George Cheyne on an abstracted baptismal entry with little detail. The entry reads: "19 Jun 1764 Hugh-James, Thomas-Rede, and Ninian-Richard, sons of the Revd. Mr George Cheyne ("with the chrism"). At Torbren".1,2 He was the son of George Cheyne and Margaret Niving.

Ninian Richard Cheyne married Mary Law 26 May 1787, in Edinburgh Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. Richard was listed as a merchant's clerk.3,4

According to A. Y. Cheyne's account, Ninian Richard married Jean Auchinlech and had three sons and three daughters. The eldest son being George, born in 1788. A reading of the IGI, shows that George was indeed born in 1788, but the mother was Mary Law (or Low). Ninian Richard and Mary had two other children.

Ninian Richard Cheyne married Jean Auchinleck 25 April 1794, in Edinburgh Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. Their abstracted entry in the Register of Marriages reads: "Cheyne (Cheen), Ninian, bookseller, St. Andrew Parish, and Miss Jean, same parish, daughter of James Auchinleck of Oxenden, 25 April 1794".5,1,6

Ninian Richard married Jean Auchinlech(k) and five children. Sons, Archibald Primrose, born to Mary Low and Charles Clement born to Jean Auchinlech were not mentioned in A. Y. Cheyne's book. Did they die young? Another interesting problem raised by his book is that, he stated he had a letter written by Susan dated 1911. She would have been 121 years of age in 1911. Did Susanna die young? Did Ninian Richard and Jean Auchinlech have an unrecorded daughter named Susan?

13 April 1797. Ninian Cheyne, Bookseller, was made a Burgess and Guild Brother of the City of Edinburgh. His abstracted entry in the Roll of Burgesses reads: "Cheyne, Ninian Richard, bookseller, B. and G., 13 Apr 1797".7

6 April 1816. He was on a list of Burgesses and Guild Brethren of the City of Edinburgh. His abstracted entry in the Roll of Burgesses reads: "Robertson, John, bookseller, B. and G., as p. to N. R. Cheyne, bookseller 06 Apr 1816".8
