James was baptized in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, 18 January 1721, at Keithen, in Monquhitter Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Monquhitter, 1670-1771, Page 65 "Jan'y 18 1721 James Chein (762) in Keithin had a child baptized whose name was James (820) Witnefses (designed?) Mr. James Cheyne Advocate (4652) in Ed'r & Anna Taylor (4708) in Brownhill".1 He was the son of James Cheyne.

James Cheyne married Jean Wilson 1747, in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, in Monquhitter Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Marriages, Parish of Monquhitter, 1693-1769, The day of the month is much obliterated in the Margin of the Register. Page 132, (1747) “James Cheyne (820) and Jean Wilson (4749) in the parish of Fyvie”. The James Cheyne that married Jean Wilson was probably James (820).2

James Cheyne, in Collynie, witnessed the christening of his son, James Cheyne, on 5 August 1748, at Collynie at Methlick Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Methlick, 1746-1820, Page 10 "August 5th (1748) James Cheyne in Collynie had a Child baptized, named James, before these Witnefses George Cruickshank & Ja's Wilson (4747)".3

James Cheyne, in Collynie, witnessed the christening of his daughter, Jean Cheyne, on 9 April 1750, at Collynie at Methlick Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Methlick, 1746-1820, Page 15 "April 9th (1750) James Cheyne in Collynie had a Child, baptized, named Jean, before these Witnefses James Wilson (4747) in the Parish of Fyvie & George Crookshank in Collynie".4

James Cheyne, in Collynie, witnessed the christening of his daughter, Mary Cheyne, on 4 March 1752, at Collynie at Methlick Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Methlick, 1746-1820, Page 23 "March 4th (1752) James Cheyne in Collynie had a Child baptized named Mary, witnefses Patrick Crookshank & John Walker both in Collynie".5
